  • Something of interest as I am assembling the information from the unit 2 scoping. They didn't go into containment nearly as far as they did at unit 5. They seem to have had more range, why didn't they go in further?
    by lillymunster 1/22/2012 4:24:55 PM

  • @lillymunster , perhaps they encountered increasing radiation and did not want to fry the camera.
    by Peter 1/22/2012 4:35:25 PM

  • @lillymunster My guess this is the 1st of many scope-jobs they will do in unit 2 and this was more of a Unit 2 test run. They will look at the results, see what worked, see what had problems and make changes/improvements.
    by RonD 1/22/2012 4:35:47 PM

  • This roadmap handout Dean found is dated Dec 26th and shows the images from inside unit 5 test run and show the camera only looking in a small area as they did in unit 2. The video of unit 5's test run showed them going under the reactor vessel. This document makes it seem like the actual purpose of 2's effort was to only go in a short way. www.tepco.co.jp

    by lillymunster 1/22/2012 5:49:52 PM

  • @lillymunster did a google translate on some parts of the roadmap, what a mess, to use an engineering term from my computer design background, they are FUBAR^N where N = 2 to infinity
    by RonD 1/22/2012 5:52:41 PM

  • @RonD lol. the translation, TEPCO's plan or both?

    by lillymunster via Tepco.co.jp 1/22/2012 6:04:39 PM

  • @lillymunster I can sort of muddle through the translation, the cleanup problem = FUBAR^N and there is no easy fix. TEPCO is doing they what they can but this is going to be very long and expensive mess to cleanup. In the end the Japan government will own/pay for the cleanup.
    by RonD 1/22/2012 6:05:33 PM

  • @RonD the sooner that is admitted the better. TEPCO can't do this alone.

  • @RonD I have not gone through this one. I think Dean might have posted it. There was something similar with a simulator test that was posted months ago. Will poke around on it when we get another lul in information coming in.

  • NHKWorld No records of nuclear disaster taskforce meetings: It has been revealed that the government's nuclear disaster taskforce did not keep any records of its meetings after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident.

Experts say this is a significant loss, as the minutes could help to prevent mistakes from being repeated.

The taskforce, headed by the prime minister and including all the Cabinet members, was launched on the day of the accident on March 11th last year.

It made important decisions, including the designation of evacuation areas, basic policies on decontamination and restrictions on the shipment of agricultural produce.

NHK asked to see the minutes last November, but it only received a list of agenda items for each of the 21 meetings and found there were no other records.

The person in charge at the government's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, which acts as the secretariat of the taskforce, told NHK that he was too busy to write the minutes.

The public records management act requires minutes of important meetings to be kept, so the government may achieve accountability and the people may verify the process by which decisions are made.

The Cabinet Office, which is responsible for the management of public records, is interviewing the person in charge at the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.

It is also investigating the lack of minutes for the meetings of the joint taskforce of the Tokyo Electric Power Company and the government, which discussed how to deal with the accident.

  • Related to the tissue dispensers containing cobalt medical waste... Has anyone tried testing pots and pans and everything in between for low level radioactive material? That is, could a lay person with a decent geiger counter do this? Also, any suggestions of geiger counters? thx! online.wsj.com

  • @Cryptococcus Peter suggested this place for some of the old school equipment www.radmeters4u.com

I have been looking off and on via Ebay and Amazon for some of the newer style ones being used in Japan. They are a bit more user friendly and look like other hand held electronics so less likely to freak people out if they see you using one somewhere. :-) Soeks (sp?) seems to be a pretty common brand.

    by lillymunster 1/22/2012 9:13:55 PM

  • Hope to get some good thoughts on the peer review, I was surprised to see that tepco made on the water level, does that mean the RPV is empty or just leaking like mad
    by dean 1/22/2012 9:22:35 PM

  • @dean whatever is leaking out of the RPV sure isn't piling up in containment.
    by lillymunster 1/22/2012 9:26:33 PM

  • @lilly.. true,, could be

  • be back
    by dean 1/22/2012 10:18:51 PM

  • a random thought based on what Dean just mentioned. If the corium burned a hole outward. If the pedestal opening is on the turbine building side. Unit 2 has been leaking the highest radiation water out the intake canal. Could the fuel have found some sort of easy path towards the turbine building and water exchange system areas? I can't remember offhand if workers have been inside 2's turbine building or what rad levels are like in it.

    by dean 1/23/2012 12:08:02 AM

  • fissions occur with fast rather than thermalized neutrons which makes it more difficult to control reactor power
