    by Jim 1/23/2012 11:54:08 AM

  • @Jim any idea what the depth was in km? The JMA only had depth on a scale

  • 50 km
    by bo 1/23/2012 12:25:39 PM

  • Yep they're saying 50km, yet locally at least the shaking was stronger than the shallower 5.8 on Jan 12th.

  • Kyodo announced all ok at the plant for what it's worth, but they always do so suspiciously quickly. There's obviously potential for a damaging shake extremely close to the plant in the future. Here's a screenshot of the January 12th quake for comparison enenews.com

for what it's worth: #2 torus radiation (blue) has a spike since the scope drilling. probably coincidence, but the spike is remarkable.

by Edano via Houseoffoust 1/23/2012 1:06:56 PM

  • @Cryptococcus I have the same curiosity. I think Marco Kaltofan in Mass. will do germanium tests if you want confirmation on something you find.
    by lillymunster 1/23/2012 1:07:36 PM

  • @Edano Odd. They did mention they are forcing air into the hole to keep radiation etc. in containment. I don't know if they blocked up the hole or were going to leave the fan running in it.
    by lillymunster 1/23/2012 1:09:15 PM

  • @lillymunster we can only speculate, but the torus is far away from the hole.
    by Edano 1/23/2012 1:10:44 PM

  • @Edano it is the only factor I can think of that has changed and seemingly too minor to impact much.
    by lillymunster 1/23/2012 1:11:21 PM

  • no impact on #2 pressure. it is atmospheric before and after.
    by Edano 1/23/2012 1:11:45 PM

  • @lillymunster maybe the corium made another blurp thru the torus connectors. :)
    by Edano 1/23/2012 1:13:49 PM

  • maybe the drilling caused a strong draft thru the torus hole. :)

  • @Edano and lilly, one thing we don't know for certain is, was something done to any system which changed flows, temps etc as part of the scope hole drilling procedure, that could have caused the radiation spike?

  • Kyodo: "Amount of radioactive materials released from Fukushima plant up" - "The amount of radioactive materials released from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture has increased this month, compared with the previous month, the plant operator said Monday.

The amount has come to 70 million becquerels per hour, compared with 60 million becquerels in December, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said, adding that the increase is attributable to displacement of radioactive materials that had settled on facilities and equipment, as a result of work conducted near the Nos. 2 and 3 reactors there." english.kyodonews.jp

  • Gov't withheld estimates showing electricity surplus to boost nuclear power: critics: mdn.mainichi.jp

"The government withheld an estimate that there would be no electricity shortages in the upcoming summer in an apparent bid to underscore the need to restart nuclear power plants, it has been learned.

Instead of announcing the realistic estimate, the government announced last summer that electric power supply in the summer of 2012 "will be about 10 percent short across the country." Furthermore, the released government estimate greatly downplayed the supply of renewable energy, disregarding the country's actual energy status."

    by Peter 1/23/2012 4:11:51 PM

  • @Peter yes, having more international cooperation and people beyond TEPCO working on the disaster would be a very good thing. It is a massive mess and needs a wider approach.
