  • 'The discovery of tainted rice in Onami and a similar case in July involving contaminated beef have left officials scrambling to plug the exposed gaps in the government’s food-screening measures, many of which were hastily introduced after the accident.

The repeated failures have done more than raise concerns that some Japanese may have been exposed to unsafe levels of radiation in their food, as regrettable as that is. They have also had a corrosive effect on public confidence in the food-monitoring efforts, with a growing segment of the public and even many experts coming to believe that officials have understated or even covered up the true extent of the public health risk in order to limit both the economic damage and the size of potential compensation payments.

Critics say farm and health officials have been too quick to allow food to go to market without adequate testing, or have ignored calls from consumers to fully disclose test results. And they say the government can no longer pull the wool over the public’s eyes, as they contend it has done routinely in the past.' www.nytimes.com

  • @lilly.. if you could look back when you put together the potential corium paths maybe you could use that along with the camera etc and try to put them together some how
    by dean 1/22/2012 1:00:17 AM

  • @dean i can do that - will add them in. Both sets of info will be using the same elevation drawing.

    by Edano 1/22/2012 1:16:52 AM

  • @dean I wish we could 100% pin down the pedestal opening location. It would help see if where they looked could have been a horizontal corium path or not.
    by lillymunster 1/22/2012 1:17:33 AM

  • green area is the pedestal opening

    by lillymunster 1/22/2012 1:27:24 AM

  • I am not sure how to translate that access opening into an accurate location vs. the penetration opening used for the camera

  • Does anyone know anything about the monorail? Is it only on one side of the reactor or do they have a monorail track on both sides? This might help located things?
    by lillymunster 1/22/2012 1:30:28 AM

  • If the monorail only exists on one side and if the elevation drawing is accurate then the pedestal opening may be on the opposite side from the scope penetration

  • atomicinsights.com @lily and all,,, good videos of TMI-2 core with melted fuel etc. perhaps will come in handy for reference to fukushima... it's amazing how they were able to get the material when needed at what ever expense... fukushima needs better help to get videos inside those areas

  • the pedestal measurement graphic shows the drywell to be 22 ft. add another 2 meters per side
to that for the curve of the containment bulb at the height of the scope penetration location

roughly 8.7 meters from the penetration to the center line of containment if you went directly horizontal
    by lillymunster 1/22/2012 1:44:25 AM

  • good work
    by dean 1/22/2012 1:52:52 AM

  • One thing of note on the corium graphic I did. I didn't pay attention to where the pedestal opening is on the drawing so the corium goes the opposite direction. The intention was to just show lateral movement.
    by lillymunster 1/22/2012 1:54:27 AM

  • @lilly, the wall of the pedistal area provides good shielding probably between where the35 opening is and a straight shot to where the corium could be. One thing seems true.. the general radiation field in that area must be horrendous

  • @dean that is great, thanks.
    by bo 1/22/2012 2:02:51 AM

  • @dean I hadn't even thought of that, the pedestal concrete would be a good shield. The radiation in there must be insane.
