  • @lillymunster wow how clever are they to know these things the world will be so relieved to know that Japan has answered the ongoing puzzle over whether quakes and volcano's 'interact' this will make the headlines for sure.... or maybe it will just be passed over as another of Japan's ;there is no radiation; episodes

  • Nuke industry is pushing back HARD. MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Entergy Corp.'s Vermont Yankee nuclear plant once again is refusing the state's request that it conduct more tests for radioactive tritium in a former drinking water well on the plant grounds.

Christopher Wamser, site vice president for plant owner Entergy, says in a Jan. 20 letter to Public Service Commissioner Elizabeth Miller that such testing would be inappropriate because it could contaminate the bedrock aquifer at the bottom of the well and might not produce reliable results.

  • Ian is gonna have a field day with this one: It’s Time to Tell the Truth About the Health Benefits of Low-Dose Radiation
    by James Muckerheide muckerheide@comcast.net
Low-dose radiation is documented to be beneficial for human health but, for political reasons, radiation is assumed to be harmful at any dose. Radiation-protection scientists, and others, who cover up the data that contradict present policy should be investigated for misconduct.

  • As to tritium, I imagine it is difficult to 1) detect tritium at very low activity and 2) to eliminate it from water. The tritium is bound to water and cannot be filtered out. You would have to electrolyze the water and separate the tritium from the other isotopes of hydrogen instead. The method I know to measure tritium is liquid scintillation counting, which entails adding a small amount of the isotope to a scintillation cocktail which is based on organic solvents and can absorb only a small amount. If the radioactivity is low to begin with, you may not be able to add enough volume of sample to the scintillation cocktail to be able to detect the contamination. The tritium problem is not trivial.

  • ...I suppose that is why we see tritium problems reported around nuke plants so frequently.

  • @Peter Entergy (evil) won the court case vs. Vermont st. gov't, so they feel they can afford to thumb their nose at gov't and people. Give them an inch and you'll find yourself castrated. @lillymunster LOL.

  • @M.I.A. , I saw that and it sounds incredible. Where are the people who always shout for states rights in this situation?

  • @Peter Not elected, alas
    by M.I.A. 1/28/2012 3:05:43 AM

  • Entergy won't do it unless the NRC makes them.
    by lillymunster 1/28/2012 3:07:09 AM

  • Entergy is the very bottom of the barrel. They won't spit on a fire unlesss they can milk money from it. Guess you might say I have a hate-on for them, so not really unbiased.
    by M.I.A. 1/28/2012 3:09:57 AM

  • @M.I.A. Their name comes up almost every time there is a problem so it is pretty well deserved.
    by lillymunster 1/28/2012 3:11:15 AM

  • And some power companies do try. Nextera has it's problems, butr hey're looking ahead. Iirc, they have one of the biggest wind farms in USA, in Texas, I think. They're putting money into wind.
    by M.I.A. 1/28/2012 3:13:05 AM

  • The state could conduct its own radiation checks around the perimeter of the plant and revisit the radiological emergency plan. Perhaps improved evacuation routes are needed. Their is a cap on how much a utility can raise the rates, isn't there? Just random thoughts.
    by Peter 1/28/2012 3:17:05 AM

  • @Peter @Peter I like the way you think :) I hope they might discover a lil problem with the tax deferments...

  • @Peter an article on Counterpunch mentioned that VT owns the transmission lines and can just refuse to allow VY to transmit power over their lines or write a law making it so. They also referenced the Long Island NY instance where they created an agency to review power plants with eminent domain rights to condemn one and seize both the plant and the companies assets. Or they could pull a SD and pass a law that nuclear waste storage has to pass a public referendum vote.
    by lillymunster 1/28/2012 3:25:03 AM

  • @M.I.A. , same is happening here around. Dominion is planning a wind farm in Virginia.
    by Peter 1/28/2012 3:25:21 AM

  • @lillymunster Yes, I remember vaguely the one on Long Island. That was shut down cold, full stop.
    by M.I.A. 1/28/2012 3:27:18 AM

  • @lillymunster , I wondered about that. The state could introduce a transmission tax. Don't we need extra lines to improve Defense in Depth after Fukushima?
    by Peter 1/28/2012 3:27:42 AM

  • Or I should say, got built, but never started, I think...No freaking way you could evac folks from there.
    by M.I.A. 1/28/2012 3:28:32 AM

  • The VY law was shot down on the grounds that the state can't decide issues of nuclear safety because that is the NRC's domain. So there are soooo many other ways to screw with VY so they can't operate. You just have to be creative.
    by lillymunster 1/28/2012 3:28:53 AM

  • @M.I.A. There was originally a plan for 11 reactors on an island with IIRC 1 bridge off it?
    by lillymunster 1/28/2012 3:29:18 AM

  • Think of the transportation problems. Perhaps that requires extra-wide roadways.
    by Peter 1/28/2012 3:29:30 AM

  • @lillymunster Unless you had a fast boat, you were screwed.
    by M.I.A. 1/28/2012 3:30:05 AM

  • I don't know the details of the supposed grounds for condemning the reactor in Long Island but it is one of those stories worthy of a movie :-)

  • A massive tax to ship unused nuclear fuel through Vermont. :-)
    by lillymunster 1/28/2012 3:33:08 AM

  • That is a post no media mentioned in this blue ribbon panel waste storage discussion yesterday. Imagine what it will cost to transport the spent fuel across the country, roadways, security and all! Who is going to pay for that?
    by Peter 1/28/2012 3:36:28 AM

  • Hey a guy just tweeted an idea to build massive wind and solar energy plants in the evac zone, and use the money for compensation. The maintenance people would have to wear rad suits, but hey!
    by M.I.A. 1/28/2012 3:36:57 AM

  • @Peter Oh I am sure we will end up paying for it.

@MIA - I heard hints of doing "some" but that is a good idea.
