  • @jay77, you are welcome. I wrote up a small essay on my scoop on the radiation problems here: brainmindinst.blogspot.com I don't know what your folks are doing professionally. But in case they have access to a biomedical research laboratory, life science buildings are commonly equipped with separate water filtration systems for highly purified deionized water. A water purification specialist commented on this site the other day, recommending reverse osmosis filtration as the best. I researched a bit myself and came to the conclusion that even block coal filters like in high-end fridges may help, if the cartridges are changed frequently.

  • @Dean The number I heard was 32 MOX units, but I don't have a source ready.

  • Well a quick search fixed that, sorry: www.ans.org

  • @Karen Warren it seem to have started to be used in september 2010, according to Wikipedia .

  • I think that US is gagging scientists to keep from focusing the real responsiblity on japan. they are the responsible govt
    by Dean 3/26/2011 3:07:31 PM

  • @Dennis: If the water itself is not capeable of holding so much radioacivity, it could be pumped back - theoretically. But if it is so hot because it transported radioactive material, then pumping the water out would leave them with emitting the same radioacivity in the turbine rooms, but uncovered. Doesn't sound exciting either
    by Max 3/26/2011 3:07:38 PM

  • borrrden.. that's good to know.. so 32 out of several hundred are mox units..
    by Dean 3/26/2011 3:08:06 PM

  • the web site I posted is some observations on MOX fuel
    by Dean 3/26/2011 3:08:38 PM

  • @Dean Yes, 32 out of 548 total (under 6%) :)

  • I want to see an interntional team with a spokes person,,, the japanese can update their own people.. but we need global updates off the country.... also, in the USA on a nuclear accident the limits of rad levels are based on the "SITE BOUNDARY'.. maybe that is why they use the front gate
    by Dean 3/26/2011 3:09:56 PM

  • @Debra Beckham Speaking of that disaster - use this link www.targetmap.com pan over to the gulf and start zooming in around the gulf of mexico label looking for 3 blobs - they appeared recently. Any guess as to what they are?

  • Speaking of Reverse Osmosis filters..I see varying reports on whether or not they can remove fallout particulate from water.. Anyone know for sure?

  • Dean, It's pretty obvious (at least, to me it is) that there is no one at the helm. The IAEA is reliant on TEPCO and GoJ agencies for its info. UN involment? Who knows.

    by WolfDK 3/26/2011 3:15:46 PM

  • @George Gibb and editors will approve when someone told them to approove. I'm kidding a bit, but they just put thei blog live again, 20 minutes after the news that you have open this place come on facebook .. I, as some others, found it strange that they close it the day where it is the most important to have it open. but I don't want to let my dark conspirasionist side take over my mind ;-)
    by futureisnow 3/26/2011 3:15:57 PM

  • they can remove radioactive particles from water.. plants to it with warm waste treatment facilities that have anion and cation beds and water flows through then the activity particles collect on the resin beads... then you have to use more resin

  • @futureisnow I think the concern is not to incite panic - i totally understand
by George Gibb 3/26/2011 3:17:10 PM

  • @Dean What do you do with the resin when its no longer useful for "cleaning"?
by Dennis Tucker Jr 3/26/2011 3:17:36 PM

  • @Janis, in my mind filtration systems that reduce the amounts of potassium cations as well as chlorine should diminish the amounts of cesium and iodine, respectively, since they are in the same group of elements in the periodic table. How well they do the job may depend on the specific system.
by Peter Melzer 3/26/2011 3:17:43 PM

  • @futureisnow I think they need some sort of direction. Maybe we can help.
by Jim Carver 3/26/2011 3:18:08 PM

  • dennis.. the resin is loaded into casks and must be permanently stored
    by Dean 3/26/2011 3:19:13 PM

  • Hi George. Glad to see you still have this up. I see the Reuters blog is still on hiatus. I like it that while it's on hiatus they arranged it with the newest posts last so it's a 298 page archive of the most useful and innovative coverage of this event on the planet. Good to see so many of the people who made that true have found this backup.
    by radioguy 3/26/2011 3:19:29 PM

  • @Jim Carver ...I know they wouldn't...but that is a very good idea...a global think tank..(did I just date myself)
    by MaryMary 3/26/2011 3:19:33 PM

  • Does anyone know whether distillation followed by running the resultant water through activated charcoal filters will remove all the radioactive particles?
by Dawn Barker 3/26/2011 3:20:03 PM

  • Hmm. Thanks, Peter. I worked in a natural foods kitchen for 13 years and all of our water ran through an RO filter...A huge one that cost a fortune. I wonder, like you, if those portable, home units, that sit on a counter, would actually be "strong enough or big enough" to do the same thing..
    by Janis 3/26/2011 3:20:11 PM

  • every one should mark their calendars and lets see what's going on 1 year from now.. any guesses?
    by Dean 3/26/2011 3:20:25 PM

  • @Dawn Barker It will remove Iodine, at least. Not sure about Caesium.
    by borrrden 3/26/2011 3:20:33 PM

  • dawn.. that helps... I read some where but would want to get the article
