I know. That's what I thought. So maybe I'm missing something in the reporting? I think there is serious confusion about measurements, and I'm starting to remember a pattern. Remember on the BP disaster, how they kept constantly mixing gallons and barrels, while changing the seriousness. It's almost starting to look like a defense mechanism.

2,300,000 Mbq/cm^3 of Cs^137? in the water on the floor of reactor 2 turbine room ... Does anyone comprehend just what is happening? That is 62 Curies/M^3 of water ... For a reference the Chernobyl "zone of alienation" (immediate evacuation) was set at 40 Curies per square kilometer !!! Believe me they will find and ongoing criticality in that water which supports Michael Allen's assertion that #2 containment vessel was substantially breached by the steam explosion 14th March. If you accept this line of reasoning I ask at what stage did TEPCO / Japanese Govt know of the breach?

@Sky I'm unfortunately in the same position. Camping with family, trying to follow all this on slow satellite connection on phone. Most video and even large pdf's inaccessible at the moment.

I should also note, that the Geiger counter I am using is one of the 1960's civil defense ones. However it is calibrated. And I just checked again. Vegas is sitting at 9 cmp.

IS TEPCo thinking in terms of salvaging reactor #5 and 6? That is thy they don;t want to sandbox reactors 1,2,3,4. If they do, reactors 5 and 6 somehow will not be able to function for next 3-4 years and that means loss of revenue. So TEPCO is hoping for a miracle and the more it waits more problematic situation might become. In current circumstances why is tepco not going to plan B?

I Agree that Japanese now have now lost faith in their government's honesty but it's a culture thing. Also, it's human to believe and have hope. So, I think the Japanese will want to believe that the sky is not falling. After they are the only nation in history to have survived and rebuilt after nuclear weapons. Anyway, an evacuation of Tokyo will not happen because it can be achieved from a practical standpoint. And, no I'm not currently in Tokyo but have spent a lot of time there over the decades, over 20-30 trips and lots of understanding of Japanese culture and negotiations. I do believe that this a slow train wreck and at least 2 of the reactor cores have melted substantially, there is fission going on, though not continuous, and at one reactor primary containment has very significant damage. All this, from piecing together info from various sources.

@Natalie EXACTLY. i think we need to breathe... it seems that worst case scenario (and many experts have said this) that it will be ONLY Japan that suffers. Let's focus on them. HUGS.

Like BP, if a nuke would fix the problem, they would use it. But there is no easy solution. They wrote off the plants the minute they injected seawater. unlike the speculation that BP was trying to save the well , they did the right thing and wrote it off for safety. The mistakes were made years ago.

@Karen..Not a write-off if you consider reactor #5 and #6. Also no. 4. They put water only in spent fuel chamber over there. Also, I believe there is a reactor #7 somewhere in the same facility. TEPCO has to have a financial reason for not taking more drastic steps. Otherwise their liability will kill them.

@Meretisa Japan will be the main and possibly only real victim of this. However, having friends there makes it really hard for me to just walk away from this. Also, @all: if you want I can do updates from my counter every now and then when it gets slow.
