gordon.. I thought they did the replacement of fuel and left fuel in that was going to continue to more burnup.. do they take all out and do that. .and then put the loaded back in?

@dean. they were PU 238 PU 239 and PU 240. all alpha, so not a hazad to the naked skin. nut if you inhale them they can cause problems

that ans link talked around the issue... sure MOX has been used and is used and if all goes well.. no problems.. but.. if a fuel elements melts and releases it's source term of plutonium.. that's a problem

Look between the towers, there is the dip in the trees and a ball of steam right there. about where the light spots have been. Anyone know about what reactor building is in that position?

plutnium is the main player that if it gets in the soil it renders it uninhabitale.. it's really a big deal and they need to continue with a wider sampling of plutonium in soil

@Nancy I think its No. 3 because the what's left of the roof line of No. 4 appears to be in the foreground of the plume. thats what I see.

can you all imagine the power of the blast on #3.. the explosion was not only bigger in magnitude to lift that debris so high.. "the towers are 250 feet or so".. and then all that junk came right back down ... ALL OVER THE MAIN FLOOR OF THE BUILDING,, spent fuel pools etc.. crashing in things... I'd be amazed at if the whole of the fuel pool didn't get some damage from that..

@Dean so does more plutonium escape via MOX rods or a more volatile plutonium. I assumed more of it since it actually is in the rods vs. just a byproduct of fission.

In watching the video of the overhead flight the one glaring thing that caught my attention
is the massive upheaval of the road directly behind one of the reactors. Various news sources have said the critical damage was caused by the tsunami, not the earthquake. After seeing this, it is hard to believe that reactors could be built to withstand it. At 1:49

@dean Yes that is my understanding, whereas in the US I understand the maximum removed for fuel rotation is 1/3 of the total core. This is then re assembled with the requisite new fuel and inserted into the core and the reactor re started. I have read several articles (not published papers though) that say that the Japanese Industry as a whole remove and re assemble the whole core with the required new rods then insert into the reactor. At any given time during the refueling process 3x more rods are at risk in Japan.

@Debra Beckham Can you confirm that debris fell back on R#3. Just because it exploded from R#3 does not mean it has to fall on r#3 again...

@VeenOui Only for those who believe in a world wide conspiracy around the Fukushima-Daiichi situation... I have yet to see any evidence of that before I will entertain that conjecture. I'm more interested in facts right now than in theories although I keep paying attention to every comment and every piece of news.
