  • @Jill in Sweden Having some difficulty posting....USG has stated the evacuation zone is 50 miles, which looks similar to Sweden's.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 8:10:15 PM

  • @DennisV : quite right. i may raise the question why they use Bq/kg soil and not Bq/m2 ? kg u only use for food. m2 would be much clearer because you will only find plutonium in the suface and not deep in the soil.
    by Matsuoko 3/28/2011 8:10:24 PM

  • @Matsuoko -- good point.

  • Last night was not of this light/steam
    by oli333 3/28/2011 8:12:12 PM

  • @DennisV Absolutely. This link is buried on a sub-page in a tiny footnote at the bottom, and it's only in passing that they admit the plutonium is from "the incident". That said, cat's out of the bag now. It's plutonium from "the incident", so now the question is: how did it get there?

    by VeenOui 3/28/2011 8:14:32 PM

  • still i don't know if they found plutonium in ALL samples (5 of 5) or just in 5 of 5000. this makes a bit difference. you cannot estimate if they just found some hotspots accidentally or if a wider area is contaminated.

    by dtinla 3/28/2011 8:15:00 PM

  • @Matsuoko I think they only did 5 samples, because on another link they show the locations of each of the 5. THey found Pu in all 5.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 8:16:05 PM

  • @Matsuoko According to TEPCO 5 samples were tested and 3 of them will be retested to try and ascertain the origin of the Pu.
by Pedro Jesus 3/28/2011 8:16:30 PM

  • @Matsuoko -- they only published 5 samples that I've seen, and 3 of the samples were missing Pu238...
    by DennisV 3/28/2011 8:16:38 PM

  • taken just after midnight BST on the 28th

"..."The US Energy Department's National Nuclear Security Administration has reportedly sent 33 experts to Japan with 7,700kg of equipment to assist Japanese authorities.

The US experts will help monitor and survey areas of the country for possible radiation. www.straitstimes.com See if I can find out what they're doing.
by Jim Carver 3/28/2011 8:18:13 PM

  • @Jojo @Matsuoko Would be my guess that they could test anywhere around that site and find it. Could be from the spent fuel rods. Caused from the fire/explosion in 4 or from the explosions in 1 or 3
by NHK Listener 3/28/2011 8:18:26 PM

  • looks like a fair amount of smoke/vapor rising in this photo
    by fitter 3/28/2011 8:18:31 PM

  • @VeenOui Man, that is NOT good news. If they are distributing that NOW, they are betting FOR having to use them.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 8:18:35 PM

  • @Jojo taking my time to post now;-) yes I agree totally -@Meretisa bit.ly it is in Swedish and I don't know if Google Translate is good enough (eg mil in Swedish means 10 km and sometimes gets translated to miles)

    by MaryW 3/28/2011 8:19:07 PM

  • @NHK Listener In their measurements, their distance is "from unit 1 /unit 2 exhaust stack". Perhaps they suspect Unit 2 of spewing Pu and so tested for that.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 8:19:34 PM

  • @Jojo I thought everyone knew that ??
    by VeenOui 3/28/2011 8:19:36 PM

  • Can I put forward the suggestion that figures for strontium and plutonium are not being published because from what I can find the area did have some contamination from previous atomic testing and they are dating the samples???
    by elainekirk 3/28/2011 8:19:46 PM

  • @Jojo i think you are right. it seems they only took 5 samples. so they found pu in every single sample. this is bad.
    by Matsuoko 3/28/2011 8:20:03 PM

  • @Jill in Sweden Thank you.
    by Meretisa 3/28/2011 8:20:29 PM

  • @Jojo nono, this is just to give a certain point for the distance.
    by Matsuoko 3/28/2011 8:20:37 PM

  • @Matsuoko And it was the SAME activity level .5 km and .75 km. That can't be good either.

  • @Meretisa bit.ly shortening didn't work I think full link www.stralsakerhetsmyndigheten.se
by Jill in Sweden 3/28/2011 8:21:53 PM

  • @VeenOui From what I have seen, TEPCO was hedging on WHERE the Pu was from: I saw news reports (CNN) suggesting it might be from background Pu (atomic testing). Clearly it's from this incident.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 8:22:22 PM

  • @NHK Listener : if pu240 is found, it cannot come from an "unburnt" rod. pu240 is a fission (chain reaction) product.

  • @Matsuoko I asked this question before I will look it up again
by NHK Listener 3/28/2011 8:23:36 PM

  • @Matsuoko So is this Pu represent a container breach with an "active" (don't know the term) core? If so could this Pu be wherever the Iodine/Cesium is MILES from the plant as part of the radioactive gas they vented?
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 8:23:54 PM

  • @janet-k We know, if you scroll down, we post pictures every hour :-)
    by VeenOui 3/28/2011 8:24:11 PM

  • @elainekirk The 5 soil samples in question were taken on the 21ST and 22ND according to TEPCO. And the Pu readings are available on their website and have been posted and reposted here several times. No trace of Strontium has been found so far.
by Pedro Jesus 3/28/2011 8:24:18 PM

    by dean 3/28/2011 8:24:21 PM

    by fitter 3/28/2011 8:25:14 PM

  • @dean Oh, hey Dean :-)
Was just wondering of TZ when you will be back from meeting....since you just up and left this AM
    by VeenOui 3/28/2011 8:25:17 PM

  • @Jojo : from a core breach or from a melting fuel pool.
