@LM, are you checking for BWRs in operation? I was surprised to find out that Japan is loaded with them. In the US, I believe, there is only one plant left, in Wash. state.

@VeenOui Been researching the possibility of the oxidation of PuO2. Plutonium oxide can form higher oxides, Pu2O3 for example, so it is possible for it to burn. Could not read the science because the pages were open to subscribers only. www.nature.com and www.sciencemag.org I have no idea what it implies here. But it does sugest plutonium oxide can be subject to further oxidation under the right circumstances.

A few days ago on the border between Croatia and Slovenia came twice to the failure of the nuclear power plant, power plant is quite old, the defect seems to be a generator and there was an automatic interruption of work, worry, because this old bucket is close to me.

www.mext.go.jp Update on the radiation levels: fallout has been falling across all prefectures, drinking water getting better in the outlying prefectures. FOr the small towns outside the 30 km zone, radiation levels dropping slightly, but soil/food/water contamination growing worse.

@VeenOui It appears to translate, but only if you switch back and forth between languages. It really muddies the comments, so I'm thinking we'd better just stick with english... Of course, it can't hurt to tell people on german message boards that they can read this site in german (or any other language) if they want to.

@fiona Not at all. I saw a news report yesterday on NHK, they had the mayor of Iitate Village on; he was informed of high radiation levels because the MEDIA came to his village asking him about it! No information to evacuate or anything else.

@Treiagonaut Me too, When i read and watched the Video's #Chernobyl, it was apparent to me, that they had major troubles estiguishing the "damm,. forgot " Mod GAUCK, yes that's it...so Plutonium was it.hence the question arose.

@Richard Baum @ Reuters I have a buring question...It seems like to me all US media dropped the story at the same time... What is your perception about what happened? Why did all major news agencies sign off at seemingly the same time? Were they following the lead on some one particualr agency? What was the talk and the word on the story?

@fiona They just posted the release for spinach in Iitate Village, it's the highest reading yet for Cesium (not Iodine). 2,870,000 Bq/ Kg. That is freakin' amazing, I have never seen levels so high. I think the limit for Japan is 500 Bq / kg, this is 2870000 Bq / kg.

What we are seeing now are higher CESIUM levels as the Iodine levels fade but the radiation continues.
