@fitter No clue when the footage could be released.. They are supposed to use an rc heli today sometime.. it is 4:52am jpt now and forcast is for sunny whether. so who knows for sure

TEPCO is preparing to fly a small, unmanned helicopter over the plant to take infrared photos of areas that have been out of reach. The photos may help the company plan its restoration work. www.nei.org

Hit enter before completing the sentence....These guys have a committee of specialist consultants, engineers, nuclear scientists etc. I don't know if it's possible, but why they don't carry out a few x-rays on different plant locations (with robots) to examine the integrity of the pressure vessels, pipes etc

surely there is plenty of portable industrial equipment out there that penetrates more than 10cm of metal, that would be handy in such a situation. I agree with you and it's quite expected that we probably learn very small fractions of what's going on from the info released. It is still good that all the various forms of radiation measurements appear to be true, confirmed by third party sources.

@talisker They use portable xray machines all the time for pipe and concrete. Problem is it is a very small picture and the damage is vast. Visual first..

Just went to google earth. It looks like both the webcam images and that video are both from the 'TEPCO observatory' just south of the site. Not a big mystery I guess.

I'm struck by a story I saw on that NHK cast going on. It was the mayor and council of a town helping people on the buses (Minimasoma I think) and only a half of the people were wearing masks, and none of the Mayor or Council... They're trying to set a brave example I guess, minimize the danger by appearing unconcerned, but that's setting a terrible example.

i.min.us @NHK Listener The elevation graphic that you posted earlier seems to show an area below the waterline where any highly radioactive water could easily exit into the sea. Any leak that was stopped with all that liquid glass could simply seep/flow out through that exit point, and no one would be able to watch it do so.
