@George Gibb true but reality is just that - pretending for almost a month that there haven't been massive releases of radioactivity and that the situation is under control hasn't helped one little bit in my opinion.

@Sims TEPCO, the Japanese Government, the Japanese nuclear regulatory agency, and the Japanese media almost ensured that nobody outside Tokyo would ever know the seriousness of the Fukushima disaster. Unfortunately for Japan, and fortunately for us, it got too big to hide.

@George Gibb maybe it was a cultural issue, but the true situation wasn't believed, accepted or really acted upon with the seriousness it merited. This blog (and MANY thanks to you) has been remarkable for exposing so many of the actual issues.

@James Ward You are right. I listened in on many a news conference where they referred to the West not having any knowledge. Frankly, I can't understand why CNN, MSN, FOX etc. have not hired Japanese interpreters (maybe they have) but a lot of news never reaches us.

Based on experience, I trust this blog and the people in it to provide accurate and timely news and analysis more than I trust any of the major news organizations. Sure, we depend on the news organizations for their reporting, since we are not there and we do not have direct access to the people involved. But for reading between the lines, digging out details, and explaining what they mean, and speculating (accurately!) about likely implications, this blog wins all contests. I've been on here since the beginning of the Reuters news blog. The folks on here have an admirable record of cutting through the clutter and disinformation, and finding the nuggets of meaningful data rapidly. Almost uniformly, the "guesses" and pronouncements made here have been echoed (a few days late!) by the news media and, finally, by the GOJ and its agencies. Forcing the disclosure of unwelcome information that affects us all.

Can anyone resolve the contradictory posts (sources: NHK, Kyodo, twitter) about a fire having broken out and then been extinguished? One says it was in #4 and dispersed massive radiation. The other says it was in the battery storage room and/or a Sample Building and was of no consequence and had no effect on the cooling of reactors. These can't both be equally true, can they?

@hudebnik I think the majority of people are oblivious to almost anything that goes on. I also think that the global economy is in for a massive shock as quarterly reports begin surfacing. This disaster has so many implacations to the world.

@Sky Anything from twitter I pretty much automatically throw out unless it is sourced or firsthand. Kyodo and NHK are pretty much saying the same thing. This Japanese NHK article ( www3.nhk.or.jp ) is from about 30 minutes ago and it says that the smoke was coming from a monitoring device near the reactor 2 inlet. It says a worker found it while surveying quake damage and reported it to the fire department. The fire was extinguished and no change in radioactive levels were detected.

Here in Hiroshima, some of the sushi restaurants have started listing their fish as "radiation free" and advertising that they are not Japanese sourced fish. See: plixi.com
