  • @wrshpr having knowledge of smoke dispersion in the atmosphere when I heard the initial reports of trace amounts in Europe it set off an alarm in my mind that more fallout is occurring in North America than we are being told.

  • They do admit that the measurements (when cornered) are not very reliable. Two officials contradicted each other. One said it was software, the other said it was hardware from the earthquake.

  • Snapshot data like they give out is crud. You know the plant readings are instrumented, recordable, not someone reading an analog gauge.

  • Regarding the rise to a 7, I have thought for a while that the GOJ has been using the specifics of Chernobyl as parameters that they want to stay inside of. The early limitations to the evacuation zone and the insistence on staying at 5 show this. From a PR point of view, they wanted this to seem "smaller" than Chernobyl.

  • @George Gibb I noticed a change to EPA's monitoring data. The monitor stations that track "waves" had a drastically different format and completely different data before and after the earthquake than I saw posted tonight. I don't know enough about the data to interpret properly but could probably find cached pages of the old vs. the new. seems suspicious.

  • @George Gibb, I agree that they had no choice to raise it, but I think they tried to use the record of Chernobyl as limit to what they were willing to do publicly, and in doing so put many more people at risk in the 20-40km area

  • I ran my own crude mathematical model to try to estimate the total release of Chernobyl released. Wikipedia mentions calculated contamination areas. From that I arrived at about 11 PBq total of cesium-137, and from that I extracted a number of 7.23 EBq (next order above peta) of iodine-131 (for starters). If you want I will post the method I used to arrive at this number so you can analyze my solution, but I will refrain unless asked because it will be slightly long..... I also took the noted peak release of Fukushima from the Japan Times article (10,000 TBq per hour) and just for fun decided to calculate how much it would be if that number were consistent for 31 straight days. I arrived at 7.44 EBq. From this data, my conclusion would be that Fukushima still has a long way to go before reaching the total releases of Chernobyl (but the data could be inaccurate of course, and even more likely I could be inaccurate :p)

  • @borrrden In order to believe that Fukushima has a long way to go to match Chernobyl, you'd have to trust the numbers TEPCO has reported to the Japanese media about the amount of radiation released from Fukushima. Sorry, but I just can't bring myself to do that.

  • @George Gibb, true re the fallout, but I am talking only in terms of PR admissions. Not that they used it as a model for safety and threat, but as a model of how to position the event for public understanding, ie, less bad than Chernobyl

  • @bo The PR has been poor at best - they do not have control of information and its been a month. The one positive aspect from what I've seen was the orderly evacuation to the 20 km radius. They moved a lot of people in a hurry.
