I am trying to find if the limits the EPA set for milk and drinking water were increased because of Fukushima, what the levels were before the increase,(if increase occurred) and if any levels found in US are of a level of concern...or would have been before levels were changed if they were increased.

The EPA has finally released some of the radiation data it has been collecting:

* Los Angeles milk radiation was above federal drinking water standards.
* Radiation found in Phoenix milk was almost at the federal drinking water standard.
* Radioactive Iodine in Boise Idaho rainwater was 130 times above Federal Drinking Water standards.
o Radioactive Caesium was 13.66 times above federal limit for Caesium-134, 2 year half-life.
o Radioactive Caesium was 12 times federal limit for Caesium-137, 30 year half-life.
* Tennessee drinking water was detected with radiation slightly above 1/2 the federal maximum.
* Radioactive Iodine has been detected in the drinking water across the entire US in the following states: California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Tennessee, Montana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, and Alabama, as well as in Canada.
* Cesium and Tellurium were found in Boise, Las Vegas, Nome and Dutch Harbor, Honolulu, Kauai and Oahu, Anaheim, Riverside, San Francisco, and San Bernardino, Jacksonville and Orlando, Salt Lake City, Guam, and Saipan.
* Uranium-234, with a half-life of 245,500 years has been found in Hawaii, California, and Washington.

While short-term events such as these do not raise public health concerns, the U.S. EPA has taken steps to increase the level of monitoring of precipitation, drinking water, and other potential exposure routes. Do these levels found in rainwater exceed EPA drinking water MCLs? If so, why shouldn't people be concerned? While the levels in the rainwater exceed the applicable MCL of 3piC/L for drinking water, it is important to note that the corresponding MCL for iodine-131 was calculated based on long-term chronic exposures over the course of a lifetime – 70 years. The levels seen in rainwater are expected to be relatively short in duration. www.mass.gov

I keep thinking the EPA has no desire to fix RADnet in retribution for their recent budget cuts...

@Sin There are things you can do to lower your risk. Understanding for yourself helps so you have a better feel if someone is feeding you BS. Gathering as much data as possible will improve the ability to get someone to do something.

@elainekirk Hi! Just out chasing some stupid sheep. And I thought nothing was dumber than cows! Thanks for asking! Things are way better today. All the roads are open and we got some rain. Still need more but we'll take what we can get. I'm kicking back and gonna have a roast beef dinner and watch a movie. I'm glad the roast is not mutton but The Movie may be.

@all Two weeks ago, UE did the same about the levels. This is quite logic: levels are for "normal situation". But with an accident (Chernobyl or Fukushima or the next one) the milk in California, the fish in Korea, the soil in Canada, even in Sweden or Norway (I think they detected Sr90 there or in Russia isnt it?) are out the levels. For iodine it is not a big problem just wait some weeks with mineral water but for long terms isotopes, the way to solve the problems is to fix new levels and the problem doesnt exist anymore...

@Sin no we should not be lied to, have the media purposely ignore the issue and all the other efforts to make this go away. The best way to get something done is to have a good bundle of information, get enough people outraged, demand something be done. The suppression of information in Japan is just criminal. Our govt. in the US isn't saying a peep about it.

@Rob in SF I don't know if the ladder was ever removed. It is hanging on the turn handle in the middle of the door. I am thinking no only because other reports saying they will need to bring in stronger bots to remove debris. @elainekirk I have been reading a discussion about a possible steam shock wave that could cause such a thing. So in time we will have a better idea of what happened.
