@Scilla I saw one yesterday and lost the link. The one posted below has a really far away shot of it. I had noticed the explosion was very out to one side rather than even and up. Almost like a shotgun. I started looking after Jo pointed out the back of the building was pushed out, not caved in.

They shrunk the evacuation zone, are levels really going down that much? It also doesn't make sense if they shrunk it to 8km but at the same time announced the 20km no entry zone? Did anyone here catch my post last night about radiation levels in Japan? I asked an expert about it and he told me that with the background readings listed, there was no way the soils could have the low levels of I-131 and Cs-137 that were in the report. I was going to lonk the page, but now it has moved.

@Scilla re. #4, Tepco reported a fire and that it was quickly put out. But then images appeared of the damage, which made it clear there was more than a fire. That still has me irritated and wanting to know what happened there. (Comparable to #1 explosion - video footage was accompanied by the Tepco report that the roof had apparently collapsed)

No idea why it failed. As of 13 Apr 15:00 it had shown a suspicious, large, drop, to 69C, from the prior reading of 182C at 6 am. That bottom temp measurement device seems to have had a spotty record, at best. Back on 3/29 reports indicated a jump up by 70C, followed by a decrease of 55C, before they declared it in a malfunction state up until 12 Apr, then it seemed to have incredible swings again as of 13 Apr, before they finally just gave up and took it offline again. I accept that it could be an honestly bad device, those are some really big temp swings.

+70 followed by -55 is a bit too much for credibility, then when it went bad again recently things were clearly off. Nobody is claiming that reactor 2 water went to -116C, while the air at the top of it was still +140C -- that just isn't believable.

@Markfm My understanding was either -116 that is way below freezing or -116 below the expected temp. Either way looks odd or wrong.

1 is what they had been injecting into, planned to later try 2 and 3, but what I've seen refers to "injection of nitrogen gas" and best I can tell it was only into the PCV (containment), not the RPV. As usual, I could be wrong -- this is just from memory and a quick check.
