  • @Ralph Unger I pretty much agree with what your saying. The older reactors with known issues need to be shut down and the current system is flawed. It has to change, the current one is putting profits ahead of safety and at the same time socializing the risks involved.

  • Heat exchanger for No1 reactor considered

    The Tokyo Electric Power Company is thinking about setting up a heat exchanger to hasten the full-scale recovery of the cooling system at the Number 1 reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

    TEPCO says 70 percent of the fuel is apparently damaged and 6 tons of water per hour is being injected into the reactor.

    In order to cool it under more stable conditions, TEPCO wants the water level in the containment vessel to reach the height of the fuel rods

    At present, the water level is estimated to be about 6 meters from the bottom of the containment vessel.

    Two plans have been considered to cool the vessel, one uses sea water, the other air.

    To avoid the risk of further damage from possible aftershocks TEPCO is favoring the water system.

    It says the pipes which connect the containment vessel and the heat exchanger must be quake protected. In addition, radioactive substances must be removed before pouring contaminated water into the heat exchanger.

    These tasks should be done inside the nuclear reactor building but as the level of radioactivity is too high for human entry, many problems remain before the heat exchanger can be set up.

  • @Ralph there are several isotopes found that suggest breach of one or more of the cores but the data analysis is complicated and beyond my knowledge. I'd say that the article sounds a little misleading, Zirconium could be coming from the SFPs. Thinking simply, can we say that there is steam coming out from where the containment cap is located? If it's breached shouldn't we see steam coming out since the water is very hot in there?

  • @Ralph...the situation is highly unstable, BUT a lot of us assumed that the zirconium cladding was a bit shot anyway, so hearing that officially reported isn't much of a newsflash, and I would probably need to see it somewhere else to really hold it in high regard, since the website also is a big podcaster of Alex Jones, who thinks the Illuminati initiated this incident as a black-op through HAARP, 9/11 was the inside job, and has now moved on to trying to overthrow Libya and Syria since they don't acknowldge the dollar in their Federal Reserve Bank (or something). As far as the thorium, it is much better than the Mark 1 Reactors, but you could probably make a better argument for the uranium gravel pit reactors, though I don't like those either. Everyone tries to talk me into the Westinghouse self colling jobs which is their latest design, but like Edano says, everything is safe till it goes nuts.

  • I started off believing that if the waste problem could be resloved nuclear power was a regretable neccessity, however I now believe that neither private companies driven by profit or governments can be trusted to run nuclear plants safely. sadly there have been too many occasions where governments have been prepared to put a supposed public interest before the real needs of those who are adversely affected

  • I got cheaper power this year, we got the South Texas Nuclear Power Plant, never proven, places with nuke power like me in Texas pay the same as anybody else.My bill has gone up abut 33% since that thing was built.

  • Ralph that was an interesting post on the zirconium... I did read one thing in there about zirconium and how it acts around radiation... I had to think on that one.... zirconium cladding is affected by three things to weaken it first internal pressure from the fission process which acts on the inside of the cladding, next is the buildup of intergranular gases cause by the fission process which can weaken the cladding and cause it to crack thus releasing the fission products inside,, next thermal induces stresses from severe temping increases over a short period of time like in a prompt criticiality event and lastly ... high temperatures which causes the oxidation and finally zr-water igintion...

  • Which all leads to a few fuel pellets being dropped top the bottom of the fuel pool or reactor. Maybe more then a few. there no-one has control of them.

  • in the T-hawk videos released by tepco, file 110415_1f_3.mpg - what seems to be #3 between 0:30-0:50, it appears that steam is coming out from the rumble center as well as the SFP. The thing is, noone can tell, it could be a pipe leaking steam in there or the gasket.

  • The system to be installed by Areva applies an original technology that is a type of coprecipitation process. It injects chemicals into the contaminated water that cause radioactive iodine, cesium and other substances to separate out by precipitation so they can be recovered. Lauvergeon asserted that the system would be capable of reducing the concentration of radioactive substances in 50 tons of highly contaminated water to between one thousandth and one ten-thousandth of the current level.

    TEPCO is studying the possible construction of underground walls around the Fukushima reactors. Their purpose would be to contain the infiltrations of radioactive water into the soil and the ocean, according to the Japanese broadcaster Asahi. The operation would require digging a 15-meter deep trench in which the wall should be built. A TEPCO spokesperson confirmed that the plan, suggested by one of premier Naoto Kan's consultants, Sumio Mabuchi, is under consideration.

    The Nuclear Safety Commission under the Prime Minister's Office disclosed on April 23 that the amount of radioactive materials being released from the TEPCO Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant was 154 terabecquerels per day (1 tera is 1 trillion) as late as April 5 when the amount being released was considered stabilized.

  • @Ralph Unger Looks like a point where something (corium) hit the dry well. There was mention of various holes in the reactor for pipes and gauges that could be where melted fuel would spill out rather than melting through the bottom right away. There is an image of Chernobyl where corium spilled out a pipe.

  • Dry well is the structure outside of the main reactor pressure vessel. 75 PSI is the max it should be at. The next line of defense is the main containment structure. that is the thing that the hydrogen blew up. 3 levels of containment and the spent fuel pools had only 1 level and it is gone. Nice engineering.

  • @Ralph Unger did you see some of the info we found earlier in the week about them replacing the metal shroud inside the RPV. They took #3, put in a new metal shroud because the original one was so old. This was the first time ever attempted and then turned around and applied to run MOX in it. It is just a major bout of dangerous over confidence.
