From what I have read, the background radiation is higher then any radiation that could be caused by the measured contaminates.

@All If you look to the NNW of unit 1 on the survey map, you'll see a 'no-go sign near a 40 msv/h debris field. That's the only one on the map, which struck me as odd. So I looked at an annotated map of the complex. I'm pretty sure that it's right behind/on the administration bldg. That's where they were measuring very high rates-when they were measuring it- on the north side of the admin bldg. But, they stopped measuring at that spot, IIRC. Hmmm...

Atmospheric radiation leak underestimated
Data released by the government indicates radioactive material was leaking into the atmosphere from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in early April in greater quantities than previously estimated.

Radioactive material was being released into the atmosphere from the plant at an estimated rate of 154 terabecquerels per day as of April 5, according to data released by the Cabinet Office's Nuclear Safety Commission on Saturday.

The NSC previously estimated radiation leakage on April 5 at "less than 1 terabecquerel per hour."

I'd rank it 4-1-3-2- with 5 and 6 together. I only put 4 in front of 1 because the potential releases are far worse, but #1 is actually a bigger threat in terms of likelihood of release.

@alblee - 3 is running MOX. There is plutonium in all the spent fuel rods as a natural byproduct of uranium fission.

@James Ward @ Nancy in response to your comments from last night, 3 pages before. If you had actually read my comments more carefully, if anything there is no suggestion that nothing is going wrong. I am simply more careful while making speculations, especially about "nuclear blasts" taking place. At the end of the day most ppl here are no experts, everyone is making speculations based on scattered data coming mainly from the Japanese gov. and Tepco. This is probably a tiny picture of what's going on. The question here is that if this had happened on US grond, I doubt we would even see 10% of that data released to the public. my two cents
