    Japan Nuclear Radiation 4 Times Chernobyl Levels OUTSIDE Evacuation Zone
    Independent scientists find radiation levels beyond Japan evacuation zone are 4 times higher than Chernobyl levels beyond the 30km evacuation zone and higher than official government reported numbers.

    The Japanese New Service Asashi reports that radiation levels measured by a collaboration of independent scientists from Kyoto University and Hiroshima university refute the official radiation levels released by the Government of Japan.

    Radiation levels 400 times normal are expected to remain in communities beyond the 30km evacuation zone.

  • there will be some rad waste in a water processing facility and there will also be lots of high level waste.. those anion and cation resin beds get zipping hot from collecting the isotopes out of the water.. this will require a whole other issue on storage of SPENT RESIN now

  • @General Armchair that has been the constant cycle. The media points out some obvious or stupid thing TEPCO does. A day or two later they act. You know the people on the ground likely can't take the initiative to make larger decisions like that even though it is a simple act to go get more dosimeters or feed your workers actual food.

  • when I listen to all the data sources for DOSE, EXPOSED DOSE, MEASURED RAD LEVELS... I have to first off.. look at the source... two places have a habit of skewing the data.. nuc plants skew it to be not as bad as it sounds, anti nuc activists skew it to lethal doses and at times say death is coming, some sources like a lab run by trustworthy people tell it like it is,,, that's the source we want to find.. so.... consider the source on all this data about does, rad levels highest measured etc... and.. the only way I believe accurate internal uptake can be measured is with a WHOLE BODY SCAN..

  • nancy.. isn't it amazing that it takes a fukushima to measure that... I want to see the BEFORE FUKUSHIMA and AFTER FUKUSHIMA breast milk data... they have had problems in that area in the past...

  • @dean The source is important, but for analysis it is even harder. If you can't understand the affect (specifically of low doses), then you are subject to bad analysis from both sides. Berkeley seems rational to me www.nuc.berkeley.edu for both sample data results and the Teams analaysis. The safecast site is good for details around japan, although a grain of salt on the results because they are often taken in an amateur way.

  • @Nancy Sadly, if Fukushima is already dosed, it becomes the best place in Japan to put new nuclear plants. Tokyo needs POWER! Make the whole prefecture a nasty, radioactive, power-generating superfund site.

  • @Rob in SF They may correct for this, but if dosimeter is up on lapel, it may not give a very accurate reading at what is going on at ankle level. I recall the very different readings TEPCO was getting in the "pit" that was leaking #2 reactor water into the ocean. They measured radioactivity at two different levels over the water. Something like a 40 cm (sorry, 60 cm) difference in height over the water led to a different radiation reading of 400 mSv/hr and 1000 mSv/hr. The old inverse square law, I guess.

    Took me a while to find it, but here's a diagram from TEPCO showing how a difference of about two foot can mean 2 and a half times more radiation:

  • @dean I meant to add the EPA for actual results, for the little sampling they are doing www.epa.gov The biggest thing I think is being overlooked is that there will be incredible variability in even the closest contiguous measurements or from one vegetable row to the next. Luckily the ONLY area where the levels are health significant in the near term, are around the accident site. After a couple of months, the levels will begin to disperse to more "General Area" radiation and radioactivity levels, then we can more accurateley assess the longer term effects.

  • @Rob in SF You know someone will have that idea. They ran the other reactor at chernobyl for years. Chubu is wanting to restart Hamaoka, considered the world's most dangerous NPP. They have two units identical to Fukushima's older units. They opted to shut those down, said it was too expensive to make them earthquake safe.

  • @dean all of this has brought up existing radiation issues all over not just Japan but here in the US. There are old background radiation sources all over the place. The article didn't elaborate on what they found, if they were short lived ones or not.

  • @Nancy Exactly. This incident is forcing people to look...everywhere. Unfortunately, what we are finding is, well, lots of things...everywhere. It's not new, but we are really taking a good hard look, and for the first time (historically) have a way for the information to be rapidly distributed and organized.

  • @Nancy There has been much talk about how badly needed the Daiichi power is. Assuming the area remains somewhat hot, they'll be generating power there, one way or another. It actually makes sense rather than abandoning the land.

  • @Nancy, @Dean, re our contamination levels, because of the rekindled interest in the subject, many Americans will be surprised to find out that their home already is contaminated to some degree like the young mother in Philly who comes to visit here once in a while. Perhaps we can begin with some pretty universal contamination like Radon (we have a mandated vent in our house) and find out what research precisely led to the current rules and regs, because with other isotopes the official word quickly is, "oh don't worry, there are no worrisome levels of this anyway!"   • Wow, they upped the limit over 12 times what it was... (I thought it was previouslu 100 mSv a year.):

    The Ministry of Health and Labor raised the maximum dose for workers to 250 mSv a year, where previously it was set at 100 mSv over 5 years (either 20 mSv a year for five years or 50 mSv for 2 years, which is in itself a strange interpretation of the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection’s guideline stipulating a maximum of 20 mSv a year.

  • Even in normal times, in this part of the reactor, you have to move very quickly to receive the smallest dose possible. That you can’t do with lead soles. There exist coveralls with full masks, but these devices seem poorly designed and primitive compared to the challenge of the task.
    So, in the absence of effective protection, one uses what is called "radiation protection".

    In Japanese, one speaks of "management of radioactivity". That’s exactly what it is: Manage the imposed collective dose administered to workers. The issue of radiation protection enters in direct conflict with that of plant safety, because the more a plant ages, the more it "showers," as the Japanese workers say, the more it must be cleaned, and the more you must ask personnel to carry out repairs and maintenance. Hence the extensive use of subcontractors.

  • @Rob in SF, it used to be 50 mSv/year once and 10 mSv/year otherwise in our world. The dose considerations for workers are quite different from regular folks,
    because the people who can work there are selected, that is no pregnant women and only adults. They need to allow qualified people to go the plant. Once you have got your allotment, it is office work only. This drives such decisions.

  • @Peter As level-headed as he sounds, some of the comments on that article are fairly scathing of his work and comments. One links to a reuters article on the birth defect rate www.reuters.com and another comment references (but does not source) that Baker's position was reversed only after getting DOE funding, and also suggest that his new position is not backed by data.

  • I guess my feeling is, if you have to dump stuff from basements of #5 and #6 into the ocean, fine, do it, but that means you're busted and you're not opening up anytime soon.

    Of course until the once-strong Japanese anti-nuke movement gets better mobilized, who knows what will happen. They need to be turning out in the hundreds of thousands in Tokyo, not in the hundreds...sigh....
