@General Armchair - the big cylinder thing is a gas tank of some variety. I am guessing nitrogen since they use that for pressure testing? Those are the kind of tanks used for pressurized gasses.

@General Armchair there is some existing bad press on TEPCO for hiring homeless day laborers to due hazard cleanup at their plants. There have been some contractors who have complained, these are skilled trades people (electricians etc) who said they were treated like crap and expendable before and right after the disaster. Their job market seems to be about as lousy as everywhere else so some people are hard up for any work at all. The one guy I saw interviewed decided it wasn't worth his life and quit.

one point.. there is probably a total of 3.5 mega watts of power coming off the sum total of fuel elements in the canal.. so plenty of heat to have considerable heat wave action in the pool... and from the history data on SFP temps.. one can see.. if you have a pan of water and heat it up to that temp they are reporting and see what happens in the bot

@Rob in SF This is going to end up as one chapter of an epic legal battle. Tepco vs. the Govt of Japan. GE vs. TEPCO. Toss in a few suits from other countries for damages. Maybe a few trying to get a different definition of that vague law. The crux will be if TEPCO was negligent.

@dean the shut down for maintenance. I have not heard anything on #4 all day. I quit looking for sfp temps because they were never putting them in the reports.

Oh your here now @dean Hi dean, it looks like I've come up with the spent pool in #4 leaking at about 400L/hr. Because that was the rate of loss until the pool caught on fire about 36 hrs. after scram. Although it is probably worse now since there was a ~7 earthquake after that. I didn't take the trouble to calculate the energy of that because I consideered that fruitless.

@Jim Carver last saturday they put in about 150 tonnes and another 210 on monday. Do you think most of that was making up water lost to heat and cooling back down?

the rough translation was 100 gallons an hour. That is a very large aquarium an hour. Sounds like a crack or the gate seal?

Jim.. I told the crew to put a nice big pan on the stove and heat it up to about 180 degrees and see what kinda heat thermals are coming off the bottom of the pan and if there are bubbles forming
