@Edano some country is going to experience a lot of growth for pioneering green technologies. It is easy to believe it could be Germany. Too bad it doesn't seem that it will be Japan. Maybe this will be the shove we need.

@bo Yes there are some, smaller versions of what they are using at the #1, building.... not cheap.... (I am not an alarmist, but practical) One question that I am not sure of is ... if you would create a negitive pressure and draw in more contaimiants

Fortunately because of my work I have a very good radiation monitor. But did not have an air filter for the house.

@Edano many people have solar on their houses here, very common. But it doesn't seem like there is a push for large scale alternatives. Ingenuity in Japan is very strong, but very local. I think most people are resigned to nukes and there are few strong voices opposing them. I agree that there are no safe nukes, and the issue of waste makes the no CO2 thing a joke. We will leave them behind eventually, but hopefully it will not be to inhabit our permanently radioactive world.

@bo 9/11 changed life here... I live in an area that is 75% miliatary bases and has 4 nuke houses in a 100 mile radius... I still have chemical suit (best you can buy) for every one in the amily.... A really good sourse for Japan would be to look at the "shelter in place procedures that all schools and other places were required to do after 9/11... for fear of chemical attack.... they were quite extensive and addressed all paramiters.... ex. if you enclsoe the school ... Good.. but someone has to go outside and shut down the mechanical equipment drawing the air into my sons school.... I provided the chemical suits as a donation, there has to be an employee on site at all times "trained in Hazmat" they were required to maintain a stock of water/food to shelter the max # of kids for a min of 3 days... ect

@bo : what about thermal and wind energy ? japan has plenty of it. everlasting, independent power sources. it is an error to believe nucleat enery makes a country independent. it's a lie. with nuclear power, you are dependent of GE, AREVA and other companies.
