  • i don't believe in a "supercriticality explosion" from sfp#3, because such an explosion does not occur:
    "Critical or supercritical nuclear fission (one that is sustained in power or increasing in power) generally occurs inside reactor cores and occasionally within test environments. A criticality accident occurs when a critical reaction is achieved unintentionally. Although dangerous, typical criticality accidents cannot reproduce the design conditions of a fission bomb, so nuclear explosions do not occur. The heat released by the nuclear reaction will typically cause the fissile material to expand, so that the nuclear reaction becomes subcritical again within a few seconds." en.wikipedia.org such a "nuke bomb" explosion would produce so much heat that even steel and concrete would begin to melt and humans would be burnt within a moment. it would have produced much more destruction on #3 building.
    i assume a third explanation, a hydrogen explosion from the containment. this would produce an immense rocketlike upward blast and it is a known flaw in mark 1 containments.

    another explanation from same article:
    "Blue glow
    Main article: Ionized air glow

    Many criticality accidents have been observed to emit a blue flash of light and to heat the material substantially. This blue flash or "blue glow" is often incorrectly attributed to Cherenkov radiation, most likely due to the very similar color of the light emitted by both of these phenomena. This is merely a coincidence.

    Instead, the blue glow of a criticality accident results from the spectral emission of the excited ionized atoms (or excited molecules) of air (mostly oxygen and nitrogen) falling back to unexcited states, which happens to produce an abundance of blue light. This is also the reason electrical sparks in air, including lightning, appear electric blue. It is a coincidence that the color of Cherenkov light and light emitted by ionized air are a very similar blue despite their very different methods of production. It would be also interesting to remark that the ozone smell was said to be a sign of high radioactivity field through Chernobyl liquidators.

    The only situation where Cherenkov light may contribute a significant amount of light to the blue flash is where the criticality occurs underwater or fully in solution (such as uranyl nitrate in a reprocessing plant) and this would be visible only if the container were open or transparent."

  • @Edano I still think the glow is luminesence caused by xenon suspended in vapor being excited. Think of those little glow sticks used for energency lighting.

  • @marie rich : well, the article says "air": "spectral emission of the excited ionized atoms (or excited molecules) of air (mostly oxygen and nitrogen) falling back to unexcited states", so it could be tellurium or xenon as well. it seems any excited gas will provide a blue glowing.

  • @marie rich Each element produces a unique spectral emmission. You can plot its emmission or absorbtion lines as appropriate and find out what element is producing it.

  • Looking at a screen capture from about an hour ago and one from last night. The images are not the same size but 4 may be at a different angle now. The "collapsed souffle" that Marie mentioned. It does seem to be almost sliding towards the SFP and falling into it. Maybe not literally but that is the visual.

  • @Nancy it could be an optical effect by a wide angle objective, but #3 and #4 look terrible. they must be well worse than we know them from the last close ups. looking horrible indeed.

  • k<1 sub critical, k=1 critical, k>1 super critical.. however, on what energy level of neutrons. criticality comes from two types of neutrons.. "PROMPT" and "Delayed" neutrons and the delayed neutrons are those that are able to be controlled and thus allow the reactor to be ran at a steady state of power. When the there is fission chain reaction from PROMPT NEUTRONS only.. the increase in fissions goes up exponentially and in such a short time that a huge uncontrollable release of energy or explosion occurs.. so.. it's the PROMPT critically accident that is the worst and is possible after a severe accident like fukushima... it was also the driver of the blast at SL-1 at the Idaho Laboratory and at chernobyl

  • @Nancy : you are right, but the tower on the left is more in the horizontal centre than the building on the left. meaning, #4 is lower than tower on the left. but i agree, it looks somehow bend and it looks scary.

  • @Edano the image is from an odd angle so the perspective looks odd, 2 looks closer than 3 and 4. But that angle and perspective don't explain the severe change that happens right at 4. The other objects don't gradually skew with 4 having the largest skew. They are vertical except 4.
