Thanks, @Angie. I hope it's not going to make landfall, of course, because that would make things worse than they already are. As it is, even just the off-core or peripheral turbulence could already be worrisome, especially for a storm coming in after several days of picking up moisture and heat energy from wide open sea.

In a 9.0 with that much lateral movement I think any perpendicular junctions would be subject to failure, not all or even most would go.

The tsunami took out the backups. Colossal engineering blunder, but the plant could have had issues just from the quake. Look at all that did.

Is there any data that shows how the EQ acted? I remember from the last big one in San Francisco there were mentions that there was a big jolt initially. By the time it made it about 100 miles away where I was it was like standing on a water bed. I hear quakes described in terms or lateral force, undualting etc. Is there any measurement that could tell us what kind of lateral force was going on?

@Nancy It's a measurement denoted as a 'gal', don't know what it stands for. Tepco did release the measurement for the basements, iirc.

@marie rich do you know what those measurements would be of in the basement? Movement?

Fault movements may include a component of strike-slip and dip-slip.

The International Panel on Fissile Materials projected that Fukushima I would be at capacity for storage of spent fuel in 2009. The 2004 figure they give for this NPP is 1,360. You can find this in Table 2.2 in the pdf document entitled "Japan's spent fuel and Plutonium Management Challenges"

@inCalifornia They opened the air lock doors at 1 yesterday. There was a massive smoke show, well more of a steam show that went on for a few hours. Reactor 3 is over 300 degrees in one of the lower RPV readings and #4 is falling over

@Nancy I thought that was plausible then, and still do enough to say if it's a lie, at least it's a believable one.
