  • The are feed manufactured feed, for the most part. I visited a trout farm in Wisconsin once and the trout were fed Purina Trout Chow.

  • 70% of the oysters in Japan come from Hiroshima, they are all farmed near the surface of the water. I think that the fish piece will hit all Japanese where it matters. Almost everyone eats fish everyday, sometimes 2-3 times a day. To have anxiety about fish will have a big impact here.

  • I was just in Texas two weeks ago, at a conference in San Antonio. I took a day trip with a buddy to tour a former Atlas missile silo that a fellow had converted into a home. It was amazing.

  • Yes, the center of the continent. I think they just built the first ones near existing military bases. Later a more elaborate infrastructure would let them choose the locations. Plus, the Soviet missiles were more capable and ours had to be hidden further out of range, in the center of the continent.

  • On The use of MOX, a little boost to the end of life cypcle power output, ~12%, so a little more profit. The big reason for MOX push now, (1995-2010) is the Bombs. About Russia's and the U.S.'s Plutonium Disposition Protocol:

    ■The protocol makes arms reductions irreversible by ensuring that U.S. and Russia will transparently dispose of weapon-grade plutonium from their respective nuclear weapons programs, thereby preventing the plutonium from ever being reused for weapons or any other military purpose.
    ■Each country agreed to complete and operate facilities that will dispose of 34 metric tons of plutonium -- enough for 17,000 nuclear bombs -- by using it as fuel in civil power reactors.
    ■Disposition activities on both sides will be subject to monitoring and inspections.
    ■The agreement calls for plutonium to be disposed by irradiating it in light water reactors in the U.S. and in fast-neutron reactors operating under certain nonproliferation conditions in the Russian Federation.
    ■The U.S. MOX fuel fabrication facility being constructed at Savannah River Site is scheduled to begin operation in 2016; Russia has already fabricated MOX fuel on a limited basis and is in the process of constructing/modifying fuel fabrication facilities capable of producing MOX fuel at levels required to meet agreed-upon disposition rate.
    ■Both countries plan to begin disposition by 2018.

  • 15-20 years from now, Uranium will be more rare, difficult to mine. The plan was to increase Nuke power, therefore need more U, so reprocess would become more useful, hence MOX, but today, get rid of the possibility of easily rebuilding nuclear weapons inventories.

    Fukushima, May 9 (Jiji Press)--High levels of radiation were detected inside the damaged building for the No. 1 reactor of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan, the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501>, said Monday.
    Radiation levels stood at 600 to 700 millisieverts around the central ladder on the first floor of the building and at 280 millisieverts inside the southern entrance of the building, according to the power supplier.
    Meanwhile, for areas where workers will install an alternative cooling system and tune up gauges, radiation levels stood at 10 to 70 millisieverts on the first floor and at 40 to 100 millisieverts on the second floor.
    Seven Tokyo Electric Power workers and two officials from the industry ministry's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency entered the No. 1 reactor building at around 4:20 a.m. Monday (7:20 p.m. Sunday GMT) to measure radiation levels inside.
    Their exposure to radiation ranged from 2.7 to 10.56 millisieverts.

  • 700 mSv is 2/3 of 1 sV which means about 15 mins max of work at that site. Until you get very sick. And you cannot go to work at a nuke plant ever again. So they are sending in amateurs?

  • @hudebnik unfortunately I don't read Japanese. But I haven't heard anyone talking about it. I doubt it is much more detailed. I'll ask around. I have asked several people about the coverage of the school level limit being raised. Everyone says that there is a lot in the media about it, but there is little "advocacy" or outrage. Just reporting.

  • My sense is that most people here "have the feeling" or get the idea from the coverage that things are generally under control and are getting better. A friend of mine whose son just graduated in March and took a job in the Tokyo area was very concerned in April. Her son had not yet moved there, and he was able to delay starting his job for a month for various reasons. He has now started and she is very relieved that he was able to wait that month, since now things are ok.
