Soon in Japan, traditionally the entire month of June, it will be the rainy season. This can be almost an entire month of daily downpours. Sometimes for a week straight. This will bring particulates down, may help with general cooling, and will also make work on site more problematic.

@UKVal they love seeing me on YouTube, but they grew up being taught to fear just this kind of moment. I kept them in out of the rain after Chernobyl. So they are both afraid and proud.

@bo Lots of rain will improve the site and area. In the Navy, we had a massive spray down system for the whole ship for decontamination if nuke war. It will wash radioactivity into the waterways and thereby reduce radiation levels. Also groundwater, but it won't be Tepco's fault:)

@RBeaner It was news to me as wellI also thought it was done from the outside but not according to this doco. "Emergency in Fukushma" it was on discovery channel. I am still looking to find it uploaded on line somewhere.....

@Bo I find it somewhat curious that we haven't seen more steam coming from 3 in the last 48 hrs. There has also been less visible steam coming from 1. Might indicate very low water level? Just guessing..

from bo's link below -oh hell!!! TEPCO announced on May 15 that it started to use boric acid in the reactor cooling water for the Reactor 3 at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant to prevent recriticality from happening. [...]

[T]he temperature at the top of the Reactor 3 RPV has risen rapidly. TEPCO increased the amount of cooling water to 12 tons per hour on May 12 using two water feeding systems, then to 15 tons per hour on May 14. However, the temperature at the top of the RPV increased by 46.5 degrees Celsius in 24 hours to 297 degrees Celsius as of 5:00AM on May 15. TEPCO thinks there’s a problem with the pipes that feed water into the RPV.
