@WolfDK Iirc, they were using expensive Boron 10 (basically concentrated), the Boric acid is a more common chemical for use in plants.

I think '2 other reacotrs' =='s 2 and 3 online.wsj.com 'the pressure vessel, a cylindrical steel container that holds nuclear fuel, "is likely to be damaged and leaking water at Units Nos. 2-3," said Junichi Matsumoto, Tepco spokesman on nuclear issues, in a news briefing Sunday.
He also said there could be far less cooling water in the pressure vessels of Unit Nos. 2-3, indicating that there are holes at the bottom of these vessels, with thousands of tons of water that was pumped into these reactors mostly leaking out.

Key nuclear facilities may have been damaged before tsunami

The Pacific Ocean: A Radioactive Garbage Dump The EPA has refused to test the Gulf of Alaska for radioactivity. In their latest negligence, EPA posted on May 3, their refusal to monitor daily radiation from Fukushima, “due to the consistent decrease in radiation levels related to the Japanese nuclear incident.”(2) This was no “incident.”

This is why I have repeatedly urged everyone to join together and get radiation monitoring in your area. Low levels of ionizing radiation, as Dr. Helen Caldicott has frequently said are extremely dangerous. Further, she has consistently noted that it is deliberately misleading to connect exterior radiation levels with internal ones. We will never get the truth from any government agency or official. In fact, their planned deceit and intentional extreme harm put us all in continued danger. It is vital that we get accurate information ourselves, and know how much we can really protect ourselves. aircrap.org

You'd think they would have confirmed accuracy of gauges 2 months ago..just a thought...........TEPCO makes effort to grasp precise water levels
Tokyo Electric Power Company will fix gauges in two of the reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant to determine precise water levels.

It appears there was a problem with the gauge in the No.1 reactor that showed the level of cooling water at about half the level of the fuel rods. The gauge was fixed on Thursday and then revealed that the rods were completely exposed and melted down.

TEPCO says the gauges at the No.2 and 3 reactors might not be showing the actual water levels, and that the worst case is that the rods have melted down.

The company says the temperatures of the two reactors are stable, so it can proceed with cooling them even if finds that meltdown took place.
TEPCO says workers will go into the reactor buildings and fix the gauges, getting the precise data on water levels needed to continue cooling the reactors.

But conditions inside the buildings are not known and the operation will be difficult.

Just woke up. I'm off to my early morning tai'chi, but before I take off, I had presumed gauges in these kinds of critical installations would have a remotely invoked "test mode" to verify their functional status (with backup power if in station blackout condition). Thanks.

@LM, you should know by now that Tepco would claim all is good for weeks (months), even if we all saw everything fall into a heap of rubble with a big dustcloud rising over the area.. Think they knew about the water levels a long time ago, and only after failing to hide the fact after pouring tons on water into the vessels, they release this information as breaking news.

The level was higher than on the previous day, when it was 2,300 times the legal limit.

@elainekirk They are providing the feb pool levels as a normal comparisson to what they are finding now. The contamination levels in SFP#4 are really low with this disaster. On the guage thing, it takes a long time just to get into the buildings, I don't think people have been inside the reactor buildings of 2 or 3 yet, just #1, IIRC
