  • hi Peter, I think it's possible depending on volume of the corium and temps involved.. once the corium reaches a certain mass tho.. I'd say it would be difficult to have it just stay there and settle down, TMI is not the worst case scenario becuase flow was re-established.. I had thought that the corium would be sufficiently hot to work away to melt

  • @Peter Melzer one worker laying pipe in Fuku mentioned he had no skills or understanding of the basics of the job, he had a totally different skillset. He isn't the first to find themselves in another job that actually needed a bit of knowledge.

  • UKVal.. very interesting article from tepco... however, it's all based on an initial assumption stated at the top of the table... assumption - IC is lost after the tsunami hit.. THEN they run the analysis... I would like to see one run assuming the start was at the SCRAM

  • TMI operators were inundated with alarms all across the board, the plant interlocks on safety systems automatically reacted and did their thing, I believe that the magintude of annunciation at the fukushima plant was so overwhelming the operators probably had a very hard time reacting to what was happening.. that's why I'd like to see a re-creation of every element at the begining of the earthquake. We know many of the things that happened but are still piecing them together for a final timeline, when the level in the RPV started dropping out of control and then the seconds-minutes for melt to begin

  • Edano, at the reactor where I worked which is different from BWR the control rods insert in milliseconds.. at the BRW plants it's somewhat longer but quickly .. not sure on exact time

  • elaine.. most safety rod/control rod systems have a seated indicator then movement and then fully inserted.. safety interlocks built in to the drive system. all indicated with lights and digital on the control rod display

  • @edano @dean so we don't know if they were fully engaged but we do know they had rods that were known to crack on insertion in normal circumstances and tepco's were being inserted during an earthquake

  • I'm checking some links.. unless elaine or nancy has them for control rod drive speed... the safety rods versus control rods drive faster.. and only the safety rods are needed to stop the criticality and take the reactor to subcritical mode

  • elaine.. two types of rods... the blades and the smaller control rods.. and two different types of drives.. .the hydraulic (faster ones) with nitrogen back up and the ones with actual motors..

  • @dean - Why after 2 months of this have we not focused on the future? I think the future is more important than focusing on the past. The denial of the seriousness of this disaster around the world and here has put everyone in greater danger by not allowing the focus of what we need to do to protect our families and ourselves....

  • There are two types of the control rod drive mechanism: hydraulic pressure drive and motor
    drive. Both types utilize the nitrogen-gas pressure stored in accumulators as driving power for
    fast insertion of control rods. When an anomaly occurs or could occur at a nuclear reactor, the
    fast insertion of all control rods into a reactor core is carried out all at once from the lower
    part of reactor core to shutdown nuclear reactor operation (it is called that a nuclear reactor is
    scrammed.) The boric acid solution injection system is provided to inject a neutron absorber
    material into the reactor core to stop reactor operation when the control rods cannot be
    inserted and the nuclear reactor cannot be placed in low-temperature shutdown mode.

  • Leth I agree. in fact after they admitted that there was fuel damage melted I thought hmmmm does it matter now to know or try to figure out when it happened.. I agree on moving forwards from where they are now,,, trying to keep detailed track of releases, posting material for all people to understand fall out in their area and how to get information around the normal channels and then finally what to do to protect ones family

  • @Lethbridgean I understand your concern but they need the email to check it's a real person signing. After you sign they then email for you to confirm. this is standard practice.

  • @dean in light of the new information over the last 48 hours does the early morning steam releases combined with associated earth quakes become more of a potential sign of something? The two incidents happened on days there was eq activity at the same time. Other mornings with the same hot/cold/humid conditions did not produce these steam events and #3 seems to be the largest producer of lots of steam.
