  • @Edano Yes it would, if they could catch something before they send someone out. I also had it suggested to me by someone who has military rad-chem experience that they need to have an organized effort to assure they are hydrated when they go out and have sufficient water intake over time while they are suited. They make a chem-rad canteen that fits into a military face mask so soldiers can drink while in a hot zone. If they can get a camelback hooked into a face mask they could drink. I don't know if being in that environment would somehow irradiate the water through the tyvek? Or is it just particle ingestion that is a concern?
    by Nancy 5/20/2011 10:49:48 PM

  • @LM yep - & the seismolgists are concerned....
    by UKVal 5/20/2011 10:49:53 PM

  • @Ralph Unger TEPCO seems to have tossed rad limits out the window. They can't get the whole body scanner to work because there is so much contamination in the command building.

  • .4uSv So 2 mSv per day
HOUR! mSv per day for all workers at the plant, how does that add up?
by Ralph Unger 5/20/2011 10:50:56 PM

  • Oops bad, hit return early. Still at 20 mSv per day at rest, how much work could anyone do? Any competent employee has already hit their radiation limit.

  • by Ralph Unger 5/20/2011 10:53:55 PM

  • @UKVal Not to mention the fact that Mt. Fuji is in that general vicinity too!
    by LM 5/20/2011 10:55:06 PM

  • @LM it's a fair way south - main problem is where the plates meet
    by UKVal 5/20/2011 10:56:25 PM

  • Lets use 150 uSv, which is the reading at the boarders of the plant. That is still 216 mSv, from the start of the accident.
by Ralph Unger 5/20/2011 10:58:26 PM

  • Fantastic site! What a lot of work that must have been. I've been following pretty much every day since Day 1 (on Reuters), and wanted to say how much I appreciate all the work everyone has put into logging the disaster and its effects. This will be a valuable tool, I think, for the future.
    by DMB 5/20/2011 11:02:02 PM

  • @Ralph Unger - IIRC, the TEPCO workers did not accept the GoJ upgrade to the 250 mSv emergency standard, so they're still at 100 mSv lifetime.
by Rob in SF 5/20/2011 11:02:08 PM

  • So anyone there, who know their ass from a crack in the ground, now has to leave.
by Ralph Unger 5/20/2011 11:02:13 PM

  • That is the second wave in the accident cascade.

  • Gov't to scrutinize TEPCO's restructuring efforts
    www.japantoday.com
"Top government officials said Friday that an independent government panel will scrutinize new cost-cutting efforts by Tokyo Electric Power Co, which will have to make compensation payments over the crisis at its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex.
Industry minister Banri Kaieda, who is dealing with the economic fallout of the situation at the plant, also expressed his hope that lawmakers will start to discuss bills that would allow the government to help the operator bear its massive compensation burden during the current parliamentary session.
‘‘I believe that a third-party government panel of experts will firmly evaluate’’ whether the utility’s streamlining efforts announced Friday are sufficient, Kaieda said at a press conference."
    by Reed 5/20/2011 11:21:26 PM

  • @Rob in SF I have an unverified report that those max dosages set by the govt. only apply to NPP workers and NOT TO CONTRACTORS. If this is true it is all sorts of messed up. These contract workers that are working via construction companies or temp agencies are going to need lots of advocacy.

  • U.S. Nuclear Industry Faces Regulatory Setback
    www.nationaljournal.com
"The nuclear industry was dealt a major blow Friday when its top federal regulatory agency announced it was delaying the approval of the most-popular reactor design pending before the agency.
The design is included in six out of a total of 13 pending applications at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission right now. The application for the design, known as AP1000, was submitted in 2007 by nuclear equipment and design company Westinghouse. If the six applications are approved, 12 reactors could get built with the AP1000 design. In total, 21 reactors are pending before the agency.
NRC Chairman Greg Jaczko said in a statement that in reviewing the design, the agency uncovered “additional technical issues.""

  • @Nancy
    Management of Radiation Workers
The dose limit for unregistered workers who are not
Radiation Workers as specified in the relevant laws and
regulations is 1mSv/year. To date, 2 female employees’
effective exposure doses have exceeded this limit. Other
    workers are currently being examined.
Only “Radiation Workers” will be allowed to work anywhere
in Fukushima Dai-ichi NPS and in the “controlled area” of
    Fukushima Dai-ni NPS.
Registration procedures will be be promptly undertaken for
employees who are not “Radiation Workers.”

Compliance with the Radiation Level Limits
TEPCO will notify its employees every month of the external
exposure, internal exposure, and the total exposure.
If external exposure exceeds 100mSv → TEPCO shall
measure the internal exposure by a WBC.
If total exposure (internal exposure + external exposure)
exceeds 200mSv → the worker will not be permitted to
    engage in operations
TEPCO will no longer permit female employees to work in
Fukushima Dai-ichi NPS. Moreover, it will make efforts to
control the external exposure so it does not exceed 3mSv.
