  • @hudebnik - could you see anything of the plant at all ( askinjg cos of my experience at dawn)
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 2:51:00 PM

  • @hudebnik hoping maybe someone else or somewhere else might have a video capture of that time frame. If we can find one it might be worth asking bionerd29 for her opinion.
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 2:52:07 PM

  • Yes plant was fainly visible, and it certainly wasn't a natural light effect, it looked like a huge blinding white flash, centred between #3 & #2, to left of tower and about roof height.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 2:53:47 PM

  • Must dash out - back later.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 2:53:57 PM

  • In which case I saw something similar, but missed the flash. I posted earlier about aura that I took to be sun on water, but now doubt...

    by Majj 5/21/2011 2:58:53 PM

  • At the time i took it for cam overexposure due to strong while light, but if I had the screen at a tilt there was a semicircular aura around 3 that looked like those pics of sun with small flares. I took it for sun on the water, but as it didn't rwally the top of the pic that now seems less likely
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 2:59:01 PM

  • rwally =reached - my bad typing!

I snapped this teppycam pink screenshot earlier, just after Hudebnik mentioned the flash.

    by es via I55.tinypic 5/21/2011 3:02:56 PM

  • @es that's like it was at dawn -then went very white
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 3:04:15 PM

  • Later ALL, take care.
    by Shadow 5/21/2011 3:07:10 PM

  • later Shadow!
ES, do you know what time JST that happened at?
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 3:09:44 PM

    by UKVal 5/21/2011 3:11:50 PM

  • @UKVal @Nancy Yes, it was paler/whiter than this when I first looked, then it was dark. And yes, that was the time in Japan - about 19:00hrs. Nice sunset.

This screenshot was taken a couple of minutes after the last.

  • @es - are you in Japan?
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 3:24:35 PM

  • @hudebnik No, Spain.
    by es 5/21/2011 3:28:05 PM

  • just a thought -it appears to be raining on the cam - could all that steam just be due to arrival of heavy rain??

    by deb 5/21/2011 3:45:02 PM

  • @UKVal The steam shows have had temps in the 50c range and moderate to high humidity. Temps run that range on other days. I think the temp and humidity could add to it but I don't think they would be the sole cause
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 3:49:52 PM

  • @Nancy - yep it does seem unlikely. But if not watering & not solely differences in temp & humidity (as these don't always accompany the steam) then I'm puzzled
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 3:53:38 PM

  • This video is interesting, about x-rays and digital cameras, note the pink flash at 0:48 www.youtube.com
    by Bobby1 5/21/2011 3:57:26 PM

  • I'm certain the bright flash and pink colour cast weren't down to rain or humidity! es's first pic was taken I guess 5-6 mins after the white flash. @nancy can you correlate the previous big smoke displayes with what happens on this chart of #3 temperatures? Interestingly the tech part of Tepco's website with current data is returning errors.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 3:57:31 PM

  • by hudebnik 5/21/2011 3:57:38 PM

  • @bobby1 that pink flas is very interesting
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 3:59:11 PM

  • or flash even
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 3:59:17 PM

  • @Nancy I missed the flashing etc but after the hot high rise steam/smokeing stopped there was a period of high steam /smoke from #4 sfp and then there was extremely heavy low level smoke that was dense and spread horizontally centrered on #3

  • To protect against potential damage as a result of future earthquakes, TEPCO started work on 9 May to install a supporting structure for the floor of the spent fuel pool of Unit 4. www.iaea.org Could that be the cause of the lights and steam?

  • hi @LE sorry you were waiting to be approved you are now on autopost
    by elainekirk 5/21/2011 4:02:13 PM

  • No it wasn't a light, it was a blinding flash, very like one of the old films of an H-bomb test in appearance
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:02:40 PM

  • Tho obv. as the plant was still there afterwards that wasn't it.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:03:06 PM

  • I reckon it took about 12-15 mins for the camera picture to return to normal, by which time darkness had fallen.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:04:27 PM

  • I worked in TV for many years and I've never seen a camera behave like that.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:06:45 PM

  • I've seen a pink hue which lasted for around 5-10 mins on 2 or 3 occasions - once 2x within 2 hours. What was interesting this am was the white 'over exposure' which followed it & the strange aura around 3 which could only be seen by looking at the screen obliquely
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:07:21 PM

  • @elainekirk Hi Elaine! the series of events where 4 is involved beyond the SFP steaming is so odd. It makes me wonder if there is a conduit of some type between the buildings at a low or underground level. If hydrogen leaked over through it, smoke and steam from low levels at 3 could come out it too?
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 4:09:43 PM

  • like the walkway you found.
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 4:10:00 PM

  • @nancy I believe that the turbine rooms basements are the link that plan I posted last night shows them as a 'whole' I also wonder if the walkway was underground

    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:14:58 PM

  • @hudebnik lookin...
    by Bobby1 5/21/2011 4:15:26 PM

  • See what I mean folks? Like a bright light from between 2&3, actually a bit higher than roof height.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:16:07 PM

  • Bearing in mind that the sun is behind the camera in the evening.
