  • that's the same position as the semicircular aura I saw around dawn -
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:18:56 PM

  • @elainekirk The turbine buildings would be the logical place for a pass through since that it outside of the reactor buildings. It could be underground and with all the damage to 4 it could potentially leak back out that back corner of 4 (by #3) because all the wall panels are out on that lower corner.
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 4:19:01 PM

  • Well that image sure looks like more than a rosy sunset. So we have an image of during and an after. Does anyone have access to an image right before that big flash?
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 4:20:15 PM

  • @Nancy I've seen low steam near the horizon between 3 & 4 several times
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:20:25 PM

  • I wonder if whatever it is is only visible when the sun is low
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:21:44 PM

  • I'm sure it is nothing to do with natural light because it happened almost instantaneously, within a very few frames.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:23:00 PM

  • If what I saw at dawn is the same thing it was pretty spectacular - like looking at the sun with small flares off
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:23:22 PM

  • Interesting to compare Bobby1's pic with my original posts (now halfway down page 7!)
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:23:40 PM

  • Man, I wish someone somewhere was just recording everything on that camera. Can't seem to find anything online. I just *feel* like the flash was important.
    by Panserbjorne9 5/21/2011 4:23:50 PM

  • @pb - me too, I've never seen anything like it nefore.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:26:14 PM

  • anybody else not able to access tepco site beyond cam page?
    by elainekirk 5/21/2011 4:29:06 PM

  • It sounds like something really odd happened. If we can find a way to prove it was more than the "sun setting" we might be able to get someone to take notice or pick up the story.
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 4:29:54 PM

  • @elainekirk English press releases page was 404 not found.
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 4:30:10 PM

  • Base web site for TEPCO is also 404.
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 4:31:06 PM

  • Yes whole website down.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:32:20 PM

  • I hope someone watches at 1st light today - please note I'm pretty sure what I saw was not just the sun rising over the sea
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:32:26 PM

  • Ukval we've all been watching one day or another when the sun came up and no one has reported seeing that before. I think it highly feasible you witnessed something.
    by Panserbjorne9 5/21/2011 4:33:44 PM

  • @nancy - it simply can't be the sun setting because the sun would be behind us not in front (I reckon the camera faces approx. northeast - agree?
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:34:02 PM

  • @Panserbjorne9 - problem was the cam pic looked very pale - like over-exposure. It's when I looked at the screen obliquely I could see it
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:34:46 PM

  • @nancy the orange is microwaves I just thought how similar to the spots on those pics the other day www.flickr.com

    by elainekirk 5/21/2011 4:37:08 PM

  • TBS live cam is off as well
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:37:33 PM

  • @hudebnik I totally agree, but you know if we send this out anywhere either as "hey look what we found" or "what is this' the first thing some people will do is try to excuse it away as being nothing.
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 4:37:36 PM

  • @hudebnik It's working for me
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:38:00 PM

  • @nancy - I agree totally. I've got my fingers crossed that Bobby1 is going to come up with the goods.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:38:19 PM

  • @hudebnik www.youtube.com
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:38:33 PM

  • @elainekirk yea, same color as those dots on #2. Pedro mentioned the big yellow dots in that one image was not characteristic of visible radiation normally seen.
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 4:38:49 PM

  • @Panserbjorne9, yeah, now I agree in seeing the screen cap of the flash. It really appears to've been 'out there', not a camera fluke. Notice how the flash appears to be *behind* the tower and silhouetting the buildings. There was a report weeks ago about a flash of blue light seen in the night attributed to a criticality. Wonder if this was that.
    by Ian 5/21/2011 4:39:07 PM

  • Deb has been running recordings of that cam. I hope she got it. Mention it when you see her.
    by radioguy 5/21/2011 4:39:53 PM

  • @radioguy alas @deb was moving her PC at the time
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:40:20 PM

  • @radioguy Sadly she wasn't recording at that time
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:40:26 PM

  • I'm striking out... there is a video someplace where that image was at 3:45 of it, but can't find the link.
    by Bobby1 5/21/2011 4:40:57 PM

  • @ian - that is exactly it, it looks just like a very bright flash. It went to peak white at first, then slowly went thru all shades of pink.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:41:36 PM

  • Thanks @bobb1, we're cheering you on...
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:42:00 PM

  • I reckon the flash was app 1 minute earlier
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:42:22 PM

  • If we can run down enough info on this big flash incident I think we should put something together and put it on the group web page.
    by Nancy 5/21/2011 4:43:26 PM

  • @ian - my theory (posted earlier) was that in the absence of blast damage could something like a neutron release have happened, and affected the CCD sensor in the camera?
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:44:00 PM

  • @hudebnik, someone, maybe you, commented and I looked at the time to see the pink/purple hued screen. I missed the flash and just figured it was a camera fluke. Instead the persistent discoloration was probably a effect the flash had on the camera.
    by Ian 5/21/2011 4:44:33 PM

  • It was followed fairly soon after by another of the big smoke/steam episodes, captured earlier.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:44:37 PM

  • Yup!
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:44:50 PM

  • Sounds like a camera's typical reaction to the sensor being temporarily overwhelmed, with gradual restoration of resolution
    by Panserbjorne9 5/21/2011 4:45:11 PM

  • I was the person lucky enough to have been looking straight at the camera at the vital moment.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:45:15 PM

  • @Panserbjorne9 in which case it's happened several times before...
    by UKVal 5/21/2011 4:45:43 PM

  • Perhaps a criticality in #3, more like a neutron bomb. Remember the neutron beams a while ago?
    by Bobby1 5/21/2011 4:46:12 PM

  • @pb - yes, the sensor was certainly oversaturated by something.
    by hudebnik 5/21/2011 4:46:32 PM

  • @Bobby1 - exactly!
