  • @hudebnik The last Teppycam shot of the day suggests some steamy display may have been on the cards: www.tepco.co.jp
    by es 5/22/2011 10:35:52 AM

  • @es - thanks for that. I have a theory that they may be venting radioactive steam when it gets dark. Maybe they have a timetable (that would be a first!)
    by hudebnik 5/22/2011 10:39:33 AM

  • @hudebnik By venting do you mean the result of pouring water onto hot corium, or something else?
    by es 5/22/2011 10:43:44 AM

  • @hudebnik I think you could be right & that somehow the cam picks it up - or maybe the cam picks up something when the sun is low (even in cloud)
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 10:44:22 AM

  • I go with the venting at night theory there can be no other reason for the 7pm- after all it doesnt get dark at 7pm now,- ceasing of teppycam updates it merely shows their arrogance that they continue to do it in the knowledge that the tippycam is catching it all

  • Oh look what the people of Japan have put together matome.naver.jp I think they will have many new followers @NuclearLeak twitter.com!/nuclearleak
    by elainekirk 5/22/2011 10:51:20 AM

  • @es @mina @elaine - In brief my theory is that some sort of copious hot steam release (deliberately) happens, and that the initial surge also releases a surge in radioactivity. Maybe the different sorts of emissions in that interfere with/overwhelm the camera sensor. It would make sense that differing radiation wavelengths might affect the sensor differently. The rad release might be invisible to humans but still affect the camera CCD.
    by hudebnik 5/22/2011 11:04:56 AM

  • @hudebnik that 'sun phenomenon' is really wierd & I don't buy the idea that it's a fog halo -shape is wrongf for a start
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 11:06:53 AM

  • @hudebnik It'd be good to see some general examples of how the camera responds to varying light levels. I know my own digital camera produces some odd temporary effects with resulting loss or distortion of picture when there is a rapid transition from light to dark, or vice versa. Perhaps someone with more in-depth technical knowledge of the camera's sensors and sensitivity can help here - it'd be useful to know what effects we might be likely to see if/when the camera malfunctions.
    by es 5/22/2011 11:17:54 AM

  • Agreed - @all can anybody help? @deb yesterday produced a couple of v. interesting videos, one of the smoke/steam, the other, when the camera had a blue tint and when viewed with your computer screen tilted back, showed a strange pulsating orb exactly where the flash had been several hours earlier. Maybe it's some sort of ionisation of the air, visible to the CCD tho not to humans...
    by hudebnik 5/22/2011 11:34:09 AM

  • @hudebnik -re Deb's id -yes I alerted people to that phenomenon which I'd observed the previous day too
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 11:36:32 AM

  • I can't believe I missed it. Light to dark so quickly...I would suspect the camera is on auto pilot, and it is using a mega telephoto zoom. Perhaps once the light fades so far the camera cant open the aperture to let enough light in... Interesting obs.
    by carabnr 5/22/2011 11:38:20 AM

  • @carabnr that might be so but I have watched the cam on other occasions when it managed the transition from day to night or vv without any problems

  • Theory on yesterday's steam/smoke show:

In my video, I see a small flash of light, then what appears to be a "trail of light".
This light actually appears multiple times, but not as bright as the one time. While it
looks like a spotlight, there are no lights in this area, and the background is ocean.
It is my belief that the light seen in my video is from the barge, and it was spaying ocean water on #4, causing all the steam and smoke. The only reason we saw the barge light was due to the ocean being very rough from the earlier earthquake. In the video of the barge, that I posted yesterday, you can see how the waves "tip" it, while lifting it up and down. At one point it is almost sideways. The barge would be hidden behind the buildings/shoreline, until a big wave lifts it up higher, making the lights on it visible in the dark. Didn't GOJ tell TEPCO not to use ocean water anymore???
    by deb 5/22/2011 1:15:19 PM

  • @deb good reasoning. The barge is the megafloat that TEPCO plans to fill with radioactive water ( about a week's worth??)
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 1:16:51 PM

  • @deb but the tug that pulled it + big wave could easily have been the source of the light as it had a high mast
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 1:18:49 PM

  • @UKVal Scary thought there, just makes me wonder what TEPCO will do with it. Unfortunately the only assumption I can made, based on their known history of lies and deceipt, would be to release it slowly in the ocean where no one can see :(
    by deb 5/22/2011 1:19:06 PM

  • .. however the light I saw was too high for that (but could have been a cam/ screen artifact)
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 1:19:34 PM

  • @deb I suspect that's what they'll do - probably an 'accident' with the float which is clearly unstable - as you saw
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 1:20:19 PM

  • I am going to see if can hunt down anymore videos from yesterday. Hoping to find something for Hub's flash, and clearer recordings than what I got yesterday.

  • @ukval and there was me thinking it had always been a molten mass!! so how do they consider these quakes and eruptions any different from for example Pompeii??? I detest doom and gloom merchants who seek to profit from instilling fear in people
    by elainekirk 5/22/2011 1:49:07 PM

  • @ukval I know but I just think of tomoro's headlines you know how the media turn these scientific observations into great drama I didnt mean to knock the study at all just the headline like you say
    by elainekirk 5/22/2011 2:00:28 PM

  • @elainekirk You're right about how the media twist things. Highly irresponsible. Qu is -how to get the public to take a real interest in scientific research without the sensationalism
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 2:04:28 PM

  • The earth core article appears in Nature, which is a highly reputable scientific journal.
    by hudebnik 5/22/2011 2:14:15 PM

  • @ukval they can reawaken interest by giving youngsters the tools, the access to books, equipment and the guidance and letting them decide what path to take , feeding children a diet of pre determined information is not learning. Latest research says 10% of 9yr olds refused to try and climb a tree and 10% of the ones who tried failed if a child doesn't know they have an inbuilt ability to climb a tree what hope is there of them becoming adults whose minds are open enough to rationalise scientific information.
Elaine is now stepping down off her soapbox and heading for the kettle
    by elainekirk 5/22/2011 2:14:29 PM

  • @deb According to NISA reports the only water being injected anywhere in the Fukushima-Daiichi NPP is fresh water. The barge is ported at Fukushima-Daiichi harbour and is meant to hold up to 10,000 tons of contaminated water to be transported elsewhere for decontamination. Anyway, the barge would be too far away to effectively spray water into the SFPs.
