  • There's smoke or something obscuring the side of 2
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 2:25:01 PM

  • Edano's posts below, wow, the difference between the two plants. Look at those two and also how the last 2 plants at Daiichi were built up higher. TEPCO knew units 1-4 were sitting too low. All their later construction is up might higher. Yet they couldn't be bothered to add more tsunami walls.

  • plant now blacked out - just saw black smoke between 3 & 2 moving towards 2, then bottom of side wall of 2 was obscured, gradually all of 2, then 4....

    by elainekirk 5/22/2011 2:29:18 PM

  • @UKVal I saw the darkness when you mentioned it on #2. Not sure the lights didn't just go out.
    by es 5/22/2011 2:29:29 PM

  • @es no -I saw smoke start from south east corner of 2. Definite smoke - I've seen steam before. Lights were still functioning
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 2:30:56 PM

  • I think the smoke was coming form 3 & blowing low towards 2, but can't be sure as it happened quite quickly
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 2:32:10 PM

  • Interesting that the timetable is very similar to yesterday's - pink screen at 1006UTC/1906JST, big smoke event 3 hours later.

This is the [only] screenshot I snapped before it all went dark, where #2 is barely visible, #3 not visible at all, and #4 notably darker than earlier. I watched as #2 was rapidy obscured from right to left.

  • @elainekirk I think I remember reading something about an effort in Germany a few years ago to do the same?
    by Nancy 5/22/2011 2:45:20 PM

  • I put the pared down names list on the other page. Please take a look. Let me know if I removed a potential name that should be put back on. I hope to have the voting poll ready to go in about 6 hours.
I know which one I am voting for :):)

  • 1 final comment -steam form 4 is coming out in another direction so I don't think that smoke was from there
?Don't stop please it is good to have updates running through the day

  • ok - 3 & tower now visible. Steam from 4 blowing off to right. Corner of 2 still obscured by smoke. 16.04 BST

  • Morning all! I don't know if this has been mentioned yet but they had a 5.5 earthquake off coast of Fukushima 26 min ago. There have been 5 quakes since I went to bed last night... earthquake.usgs.gov

  • global incident makes that quake as 16 mins ago -it's a fair way out to sea 21 minutes ago
    Magnitude: 5.5
    DateTime: Sunday May 22 2011, 14:46:12 UTC
Region: off the east coast of Honshu, Japan
    Depth: 29.2 km

  • by UKVal via Emsc-csem.org 5/22/2011 3:09:58 PM

  • @UKVal Thanks for that. A 5.5 even at that distance will shake things up some for sure. They definitely don't need them!
    by LM 5/22/2011 3:10:52 PM

  • @LM seems like that quake arrived during the smoke event
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:15:03 PM

  • Sorry for the "shaky filming", not right handed, but only usable one I have :) This is the view with screen tilted back, using phone to record.

  • @UKVal Wow..I don't know how they'll be able to stabilize things. The aftershocks won't stop anytime soon. By the way...I just noticed a 4.6 EQ off Oregon coast in the Cascadia subduction zone....very similar area to coast off Japan.
    by LM 5/22/2011 3:18:40 PM

  • @deb well done -I couldn't do that!
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:19:39 PM

  • @LM Mt Shasta had 3 yesterday, Mt St. Helens racked up 1.
    by deb 5/22/2011 3:21:16 PM

  • @LM quakes in Mediterranean are hotting up 2 - last 1 was a 4.6 & there's been loads around Greece. Turke hasn't stopped shaking - over 150 quakes there since the big 1
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:22:14 PM

  • For how fast those incidents clear off it isn't fog or due to high humidity.

  • @Nancy no it certainly isn't. Arnie is wrong
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:23:45 PM

  • @UKVal You can add a 4.8 off Portuguese south coast about a month and a half ago. I heard that one but didn't feel the shake. It's not Mediterranean but close enough.
by Pedro Jesus 5/22/2011 3:24:49 PM

  • The Japan quake shook things up a lot...now we just have to hope things settle down a bit.

    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:28:00 PM

  • @Nancy @UKVal I agree..The smoke has been there all day long and visible depending upon the wind..even Teppycam has looked bad the last few days. I wish we were getting info..
    by LM 5/22/2011 3:28:21 PM

  • @UKVal I heard the rumble while I was in the bathroom. But nothing shook in the house, though. It was too far off the coast.
by Pedro Jesus 5/22/2011 3:28:25 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus wow!
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:28:48 PM

  • @UKVal Oh, I didn't know about those last two quakes.
by Pedro Jesus 5/22/2011 3:29:08 PM

  • @UKVal A number of people wrote of the steam show as just high humidity. You can have more than one weather feature at the same time. The dewpoint or temp could add to the visibility of steam. There has also been an ongoing haze in the region. Neither explains the fast forming and fast dissipating steam shows that clearly emanate from the buildings.
    by Nancy 5/22/2011 3:31:50 PM

  • @Nancy I agree absolutely. Isn't it infuriating when people explain away things without having seen them or taking into account all the factors?
