  • @Nancy what do you make of the black area on the wall of 2? It was wher the smoke started but it isn't moving much so I wonder if there's also a shadow.
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:37:12 PM

  • @UKVal Thanks.
by Pedro Jesus 5/22/2011 3:37:18 PM

  • clear steam from 3 - I wasn't sure earlier.. 4 still boiling nicely
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:38:16 PM

  • @UKVal Good catch...It looks like black smoke to me..it appears to be moving and the smoke is staying close to ground.
    by LM 5/22/2011 3:39:08 PM

  • @UKVal It looks to possibly be coming from 3.
    by LM 5/22/2011 3:39:48 PM

  • They're all at it now -2,3,4
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:40:19 PM

  • I just saw a flash between 2 & 3 - could have been a torch being turned on/off very fast
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:41:24 PM

  • @LM yes! IIt could be coming from lower down on 2 given the wind direction
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:42:30 PM

  • The light on R3 is interesting. Looks like they do have work lights on those standing beams. That is about right for one of the "bright spot" reflection areas at sunset the other day. Maybe that work light is casting the shadow on R2. That's the garbage heap that the reactor is in we se shadowed.
    by radioguy 5/22/2011 3:42:44 PM

  • @UKVal I think the darkness we're seeing on the corner of #2 must be a shadow. It's very fixed in position and seems too consistent in shape for smoke.
    by es 5/22/2011 3:43:10 PM

  • @UKVal That 3.0 one was inland 166.6Km north from where I live. To weak to be felt here on the south coast. Thanks, once again for the info.
by Pedro Jesus 5/22/2011 3:43:28 PM

  • @es yes I'm wondering if it's a shadow
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:46:03 PM

  • Don't know if this is true. It seems to me that the darker smoke..perhaps denser..tends to stay low unless there is something..ie explosion..to create lift. Just a thought. I'm seeing diffusion of The dark area at corner of 2. That doesn't seem like shadow to me.
    by LM 5/22/2011 3:46:37 PM

  • @radioguy what I saw at 2 dawns was nothing like worklights thru mist & the shape was wrong
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:47:34 PM

  • @radioguy .. but you could be right about the shadow now...
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:49:18 PM

  • if so all that black smoke earlier was from 3...
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:49:54 PM

  • #4's roof looks really sad. The intense heat from smoke/steam can't possibly be helping.
    by LM 5/22/2011 3:49:56 PM

  • TEPCO didn't follow Fukushima emergency manual
NHK has learned it is highly likely that the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant did not follow the procedures to prevent a hydrogen explosion.

NHK obtained the manual for the No.1 reactor, where the hydrogen blast occurred on March 12th, one day after the tsunami destroyed the reactor's cooling system.

A failure of the cooling system causes the pressure inside the reactor's container vessel to rise and generates the risk of a hydrogen explosion.

The manual calls for releasing air from the vessel when the pressure is projected to rise to 853 kilopascals -- double the operating limit.

A venting operation is necessary to prevent the vessel from being damaged, which could lead to the leakage of a large amount of radioactive substances.

The manual NHK has obtained shows that the pressure inside the vessel was close to the level that requires a venting operation 13 hours before the explosion occurred.

But the plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, did not start the operation until 6 and a half hours before the explosion, and the operation was carried out just one and a half hours before the blast because it was hampered by high-level radioactivity.

A former nuclear plant engineer, Masashi Goto, says the utility should have released air when the pressure rose close to twice the operating limit.

Goto says if the company had done this, the amount of hydrogen leaked from the reactor core to the container vessel would have been smaller, reducing the risk of an explosion.

Tokyo Electric declined to comment, saying it is evaluating its decision to release the air.

  • @UKVal I changed my mind about the smoke at corner of 2 coming from 3. Wind direction is to the right and I could see the black smoke moving toward 3 from lower down on 2 or possibly 1.
    by LM 5/22/2011 3:52:54 PM

  • @LM it's either smoke frfrom low down on 2 or a shadow cast by 3 on 2. As it doesn't vary much I'm beginning to think the latter.
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 3:56:33 PM

  • .. if a light it's new -hasn't been there previous nights

  • @UKVal True. I think it's smoke..It's not uniform and changes some with frame changes.
    by LM 5/22/2011 3:58:46 PM

  • @UKVal Obviously I could be wrong! If the smoke were coming from lower on that corner..given wind it would create that arc.
    by LM 5/22/2011 4:00:23 PM

  • @Banned sth - interesting post - so radioactivity prevented them from doing something to prevent the release of radioactivity! duh?
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:00:57 PM

  • @LM yes -that's why it's hard to say, especially as it's so low down & comparatively sheltered. But the steam from 4 has shifted round a bit & that hasn't moved.
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:02:12 PM

  • @UKVal True...it's worth keeping an eye on.
    by LM 5/22/2011 4:03:21 PM

  • when the smoke event happened earlier it started orm that corner, expanded up & along the wall towards the cam then spread out over 3
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:05:31 PM

  • orm =on!!
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:05:42 PM

  • OK @all - I've finished my magnum opus on the flash, pink pics etc phenomena, and you'll find it on the Wiki here fukushimafaq.wikispaces.com All comments welcomed!
    by hudebnik 5/22/2011 4:06:45 PM

  • @UKVal I think I'm seeing smoke distortion next to the corner on 2...it's just really hard to confirm with the darkness. I hope we don't have fog when the sun comes up!
    by LM 5/22/2011 4:09:33 PM

  • I received some new data on the stability issues at #4 and also the land changes due to the quake. The area at the plant dropped over 1.5 feet and shifted about 7-8 feet horizontally. Also some new data on the buildings. Towers are leaning and more than 4 has a shift to the building. www.houseoffoust.com

  • @hudebnik great work! just to say I saw the same thing the previous dawn to the 1 Deb captured
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:11:25 PM

  • @hudebnik .. but it wasn't until you commented on what oyu'd seen that I thought about my obs that am & realised it couldn't have been the sun on the water - wrong shape & place
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:13:41 PM

  • @ukval - exactly - deb's viseo is extraordinary.
    by hudebnik 5/22/2011 4:15:00 PM

  • @Nancy wow! that's some shift!!! Glad to know it's not just my eyesight on the towers. When we saw the other cam pics form shorelevel I thought they were leaning backwards (ie towards tippycam) too
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:16:04 PM

  • 4 has a lot of dark smoke out of the SFP looks a bit too dark for steam, even with the small amt of lights.
    by Nancy 5/22/2011 4:16:32 PM

  • @hudebnik It's even more wierd to watch it on screen at the time. The 1st time I saw it I thought my eyes had gone!
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:16:59 PM

  • @Nancy That's just what I was thinking!
    by LM 5/22/2011 4:17:06 PM

  • @nancy - seems to be coming out lower down the wall tho it is soo hard to tell
    by hudebnik 5/22/2011 4:17:16 PM

  • @UKVal If we can start getting regular shots from the new camera I can grab stills and try to line those up also.
    by Nancy 5/22/2011 4:17:17 PM

  • @Nancy yes smoke/ steam's from 4's been getting darker for a while
    by UKVal 5/22/2011 4:17:52 PM

  • @ukval - i was so glued to the screen that I didn't manage to grab any off-screen stills.
