    by Edano 5/23/2011 11:25:13 AM

  • I wish TEPCO would issue "their" time line on how the systems were susposed to function relative to what happened before the tsunami.. I'm not sure TEPCO knows
    by dean 5/23/2011 11:27:52 AM

  • build perfect reactor = never have any problems therefore don't worry about making procedures for severe accidents
    by dean 5/23/2011 11:28:34 AM

  • @dean - it would be good to get hold of a copy of the #1 emergency manual that NHK have obtained.
    by hudebnik 5/23/2011 11:33:29 AM

  • @hudebnik That second pool video, in the first few seconds appears to show intact walls, with a couple panels removed, and the green paint on the crane looks undamaged from explosion. This might be R2 SFP. I would suggest going to TEPCO release vice youtube stating it is #4
    by RBeaner 5/23/2011 11:36:34 AM

  • agreed hudebnik.. we should be able to get hold of it's sister copy in USA some how... also I have a copy of a typical BWR "techincal safety requirements" which includes some actions that are automatic in the BWR's to curb accidents. as well the GE technology BWR technical manual

  • Kan denies having instructed TEPCO to stop seawater injection

    TOKYO, May 23, Kyodo

Prime Minister Naoto Kan on Monday denied having instructed Tokyo Electric Power Co. to stop injecting seawater into the troubled No. 1 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, brushing aside criticism that an alleged suspension order from him may have worsened the situation.

At a Diet session, Kan said while he ordered the Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan and TEPCO on March 12, a day after the mega earthquake and tsunami crippled the plant, to examine if the injection could rekindle a nuclear chain reaction in a state known as ''recriticality,'' he did not receive a report at that time that the injection had actually started.

''I cannot have said 'stop' with regard to something that had not been reported to me,'' the premier told the House of Representatives' special committee on post-disaster reconstruction in response to Sadakazu Tanigaki, chief of the main opposition Liberal Democratic Party. english.kyodonews.jp

  • www.classicalvalues.com I am posting this link for a discussion on RE-Criticality for reading enjoyment
    by dean 5/23/2011 11:44:30 AM

  • @carabnr Actually that says a single rad monitor at the perimeter alarmed before tsunami, it is completely possible it was an incorrect alarm. It says being investigated. If the perimeter alarm was true, other alarms inside the plant would have also sounded hi rad.
    by RBeaner 5/23/2011 11:47:17 AM

  • in the link.. they use sophisticated model programs to analyse certain conditions and each have initial assumed inputs that all have to be understood for that particular set out outcomes. thus far I haven't run across any MODELS that have been re-run with inputs exactly like the fukushima nuclear accident. We all look at all these analyses and try to pick something that represents the accident to pick outcomes or,,, simply assume the worst case and say it envelopes fukushima

  • @Edano @dean Remember that plant they closed in canada, then they had a World shortage of medical isotope tracers, the gov ORDERED the restart of that plant. They estimated some several thousand (IIRC 20,000) treatments were delayed due to IIRC two month closure.

  • A special earthquake-resistant building that serves as a base for emergency workers at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant had its doors strained by hydrogen explosions at the No. 1 and 3 reactors in March, making it easier for radioactive substances to come in. "We had meals there, so I think radioactive substances came into our bodies," a male worker in his 40s said. "We just drink beer and wash them down," he added.

A 34-year-old male worker, who entered the nuclear complex earlier in May, voiced concerns over the lack of a sufficient system to check internal exposure to radiation. "Most of the workers around me have not undergone checkups at all. Those in their 20s are particularly worried," he said.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), the operator of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant, is to check workers' internal exposure to radiation whenever deemed necessary, in addition to regular checks conducted every three months. But as of May 16, only about 1,400 workers have gone through checkups -- roughly 20 percent of the total number of workers. And only 40 of the workers have had their test results confirmed.

  • RBeaner with your experience in rad things.. would you consider working up something on whole body scanning ie: what they do and what they look for?
    by dean 5/23/2011 12:06:29 PM

  • I think a whole body scan should come to be normal for the annual medical check ups that insurances cover.. and if no insurance .. free
    by dean 5/23/2011 12:07:39 PM

  • @dean there was a mention in a report last week that their drinking water in the command center became contaminated at one point also.
    by Nancy 5/23/2011 12:07:52 PM

  • @dean They could not get the scanners to work at the command center at Daiini. What I can't figure out is why don't they set them up at Daiichi and do scans as people rotate out to rest.
    by Nancy 5/23/2011 12:08:44 PM

  • not surprised Nancy,,,bottled water the best if you decontaminate before drinking it
    by dean 5/23/2011 12:08:52 PM

  • that's something the international community could help .. sent whole body scanners and set up like the red cross of nuclear,,,,free scans
    by dean 5/23/2011 12:09:41 PM

  • @dean I saw a picture where they had what looked like square metal tanks with a tap on the end. The tanks were inside a rack.
    by Nancy 5/23/2011 12:10:13 PM

  • so, they only send workers with prostata cancer in ? good idea.
    by Edano 5/23/2011 12:10:24 PM

  • where I worked,,, if a person suspected any internal uptake, first a nose swab and that usually triggered the instant whole body scan .. or if in unanticipated higher than planned rad level
    by dean 5/23/2011 12:10:47 PM

  • Edano.. stop.. I spilled my coffee...
    by dean 5/23/2011 12:11:05 PM

  • Nancy.. you know it's like wearing knee high rubber boots and rubber gloves when going in a pig pen with 4 feet of muck.. pretty soon you take your boots and gloves off and get mucky... or.. if you get skunk scent on you pretty soon you don't even know you smell like a skunk..
    by dean 5/23/2011 12:13:13 PM

  • that one comment "we just wash it all down with beer".. classic example of who cares
