  • @radioguy agreed. Now we need to decide if we want a run-off.

  • And then Fukuleaks tagged on a quick 8 or 9 at the end too.

  • @Nancy I saw that too, but they are apparently moving cattle to other farms where they intend to scan them before selling the beef...a tad outrageous to me. This is for owners who haven't abandoned them. I found an article about it although it's not the one I saw 2 days ago. www.yomiuri.co.jp

  • @LM The one I saw must have been a different article. The dairy farmer was video taping his dairy cows going off to be euthanized with a tear on his face. :-(

    May 25, 2011 10:00 PM EDT
Japan's Tohoku tsunami death toll/missing persons moved lower by almost 50 in the past 48 hours. Workers recovered 29 new bodies, while 76 were dropped from missing persons. Meanwhile, TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi threatens new and lingering deaths. news.gather.com

  • Greenpeace Fukushima radiation research reveals serious marine contamination
    Press release - May 26, 2011
Tokyo, Japan, 26 May 2011 – Greenpeace today slammed the Japanese authorities’ continued inadequate response to the Fukushima nuclear crisis, after new data from its radiation monitoring showed seaweed radiation levels 50 times higher than official limits, raising serious concerns about continued long-term risks to people and the environment from contaminated seawater. In contrast, Japanese authorities claim that radioactivity is being dispersed or diluted (1) and are undertaking only limited marine radiation monitoring. www.greenpeace.org

  • @Nancy I think it's really tragic! Moving cattle is fine along with decontamination but they should never be sold for food. You can't decontaminate a cow that has eaten cesium laden grass! Are they really that stupid?

  • @LM They need to cull all the cattle in that area and compensate the farmers. They also need to determine if it is ever going to be safe to have cattle on that land in the future. There needs to be a DIY system for farmers to get their soil and grass tested by sending it somewhere impartial for testing.

  • @Nancy I absolutely agree! The GoJ is being incredibly irresponsible when it comes to food safety...I guess money is more important than potentially sick citizens....

  • @LM There has to be some lab that would do private testing for people.

  • @Nancy I would assume. My concern is that they're filling people's heads with falsehoods that end up keeping them from self-advocating.

TEPCO Now Says High Levels of Cesium Detected Above No1 Fukushima Reactor
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says the density of radioactive cesium above the No.1 reactor is 18 times the permissible level for the edge of the plant's compound. Large amounts of radioactive substances have been released into the air since reactor cores and buildings were damaged, but measurements were not available. wolfram-publications.blogspot.com

  • @LM But some are not buying it. The farmers are distressed, the parents of school children are protesting. One or two farmers test, they will tell others what they find or don't find. The farmers in the region went to Tokyo early on and protested at TEPCO's corporate headquarters. I think the people who are buying the BS are the ones who keep thinking they can go home soon and live near the plant.
    by Nancy 5/26/2011 3:05:29 AM

  • @Nancy So true..it gives me hope when I read about people rising up. Those evacuees from close to the plant should have been told from day 1 that there would be no returning..then perhaps they might have understood the gravity of the situation. They've left everything ambiguous. Hopefully the educated will get out there and scream even more!

Not only the pressure vessels, but the containment vessels of the Nos. 1 to 3 reactors at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant were probably damaged within 24 hours of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, according to Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s analysis of the nuclear crisis. www.yomiuri.co.jp

  • Oooooooookay. Electricity from microbes a step closer: study

OSLO (Reuters) -- Microbes may be harnessed more easily to generate energy after a finding about how they naturally let off tiny electrical charges, scientists said on Monday.

The bacteria, found to have microscopic “wires” sticking through their cell walls, might also be used to clean up oil spills or uranium pollution, according to the report in the U.S. journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. www.tehrantimes.com

  • @Panserbjorne9 It's looking likely that there was MOX corium on the #3 building floor prior to the explosion. An efficient plutonium dispersal mechanism, worst case scenario.

  • @Panserbjorne9 Yes... It's the only way to get significant amounts of plutonium across the Pacific. Blown-up spent rods won't do it. Bubbling corium with concrete won't do it either, without an explosion to lift it high up.

  • One more news story. Maybe they sent a pigeon. TEPCO claims it notified gov't of seawater injection plan at Fukushima plant

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), operator of the crisis-stricken Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant, said on May 25 that it had informed authorities before it began to inject seawater into its overheating No. 1 reactor on March 12.

During a Diet session on May 23, Kan denied news reports that the seawater injection was temporarily suspended for 55 minutes at his instruction, aggravating the nuclear crisis, saying the government had never been notified of the plan in the first place. "I couldn't say, 'stop' or 'go ahead' to something we were never notified of." mdn.mainichi.jp

  • Following events as close as we can here in Japan. Despairing at the lack of information. As a British citizen I am underwhelmed (and that is a polite euphemism!) at the response of the British government and embassy. As for the Japanese government, well... . I feel my family is just expendable to these people. We have taken our eldest daughter out of school for the rest of the month. The wind has not been blowing the right way. Some teachers are telling children not to play outside in the rain, but only when the principal is not around. Let us have some real independent data please! We cannot make sensible decisions without some hard information. When will the authorities and powers that be start taking this seriously...never I suspect.
