  • @Reed , i guess the Germans never liked nuclear power. The anti-nuke movement gave rise to the Greens, which became a powerful political force in Germany in the past forty years. They are glad today that Heisenberg did not manage to invent the secret weapon for Adolf by a hair.

Fukushima No. 1 eyed as site for nuke fuel graveyard
    Bloomberg
The Atomic Energy Society of Japan is discussing a plan to make the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant a storage site for radioactive waste from the crippled station.

Building a repository would cost several trillion yen, Muneo Morokuzu, a professor of energy and environmental public policy at the University of Tokyo, said in an interview Wednesday. The society comprises more than 7,000 nuclear researchers and engineers and makes recommendations to the government on atomic energy policy.

"We are involved in intense talks on the cleanup of the Fukushima plant and construction of nuclear waste storage facilities at the site is one option," said Morokuzu, one of 50 people on a cleanup panel that includes observers from Tokyo Electric Power Co. and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry...

  • TEPCO says it continued seawater injection at reactor without interruption
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Thursday it had continued injecting seawater into its No. 1 reactor at its crisis-stricken nuclear plant in Fukushima Prefecture, reversing its earlier story that it had suspended the work after receiving information that the prime minister's office was concerned about it.

The utility, known as TEPCO, said it learned of the move after questioning the head of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, who told company officials this week that he had gone ahead in continuing seawater injection into the No. 1 reactor despite the firm's decision to suspend the work.

TEPCO had earlier said it began injecting seawater to cool nuclear fuel inside the reactor on the evening of March 12, one day after the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami, but that it suspended the work 21 minutes later before resuming it another 55 minutes afterward...

  • Gov't displeased with TEPCO's flip-flop on seawater injection
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The government expressed displeasure Thursday regarding Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s flip-flop over the injection of seawater into a nuclear reactor at its Fukushima Daiichi power plant the day after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

"If the facts are not accurately reported, we will be struggling as to how to respond to the situation. More than anything, the public will become doubtful" about the information released subsequently, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told a news conference.

Edano made the comments after the utility, known as TEPCO, said earlier in the day that water continued to be injected into the reactor on March 12, retracting its earlier announcement that it had temporarily suspended water injection on that day.

TEPCO's initial statement that the injection of seawater was suspended on the day after the twin disasters hit the complex added to the criticism of Prime Minister Naoto Kan's handling of the country's worst nuclear crisis.

  • Radioactive water storage leak?
    The Yomiuri Shimbun
    (May. 27, 2011)

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Thursday water levels at a spent fuel treatment facility at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant dropped about five centimeters in 20 hours after the utility stopped moving highly radioactive water to the facility, fueling concern over a leak of contaminated water.

On May 17, TEPCO began transferring radioactive water from the No. 3 reactor turbine building to a "miscellaneous solid waste volume reduction treatment building," which is housed in the waste treatment facility at the No. 3 reactor. But shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday, the plant operator stopped moving water because the facility had filled to 3,660 tons, close to its capacity of 4,000 tons.

However, water levels at the building fell 4.8 centimeters from 11 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday, according to TEPCO. A five-centimeter drop means about 60 tons of contaminated water somehow escaped from the facility.

"Work to prevent water pipes from leaking in the building has been insufficient, so water could have leaked into aisles next to the storage container or other places," a TEPCO official said.

  • Fire at Diani...
TOKYO -- A fire broke out on Friday at a nuclear power station near Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi, the plant at the centre of the world's worst atomic crisis since Chernobyl, its operator said.
Embattled Tokyo Electric Power Co. said the blaze started in the basement of an annexe to the reactor number one at Fukushima Daini.
The fire, which broke out on a power distribution board for lights, was immediately put out by plant workers, a TEPCO spokesman said.
"There are no reports on injuries or any leakage of radiation because of the fire," he said.
Firefighters are investigating what triggered the blaze, he added.
Fukushima Daini's four reactors were put in a state of cold shutdown following the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that hit the area on March 11.

  • TEPCO may need to plug leak at Fukushima plant
The operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant says highly radioactive water continues to leak from a waste disposal facility in the complex.

Tokyo Electric Power Company said on Friday that the water level had dropped by around 3 centimeters as of 7 AM from the level observed at 5 PM on Thursday.

TEPCO had transferred to the facility some of the highly radioactive water flooding the basement of the No.3 reactor's turbine building and nearby tunnel, before it suspended the work earlier this week.

On Thursday, the transferred water was found to be leaking into an underground passage to another building.

The utility firm says it is likely that the water level in the facility will stop falling, but added that it may need to plug the leaks.

The work is expected to be difficult as radiation levels of up to 70 millisieverts per hour have been detected on the water's surface.

TEPCO also faces the urgent task of preventing the contaminated water around the No.3 reactor from spilling into the sea or underground.
