  • The Shining Rainbow has long lured sushi lovers to downtown Albany, N.Y., with dishes like the spicy salmon roll and maki combo.

But on April 1, two weeks after a 9.0 magnitude earthquake triggered a disaster at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the popular Chinese-Japanese restaurant slapped this announcement on its menu: "Because (of) the RADIATION in JAPAN, for our quality (customers), we will stop serving Japanese food until we can get FRESH sources of food from Japan. Sorry for the inconvenience."

  • Hi all - just arrived & catching up. Have had a day off visiting friends. I've seen the posts re live TEPCO feed but can only get it to work in IE & not Chrome. Idf someone can tell me how to get it to work in the latter I'd be grateful.
    by UKVal 5/31/2011 9:12:53 PM

  • @edano I agree..which is why it's so weird when there's life..It certainly took me by surprise. There definitely was some visible wind yesterday but very dead today.

  • Nuclear Energy in Asia: A Post-Fukushima Perspective
    Tuesday, 31 May 2011 00:00 Hooman Peimani
On March 11, 2011 a massive earthquake and accompanying tsunami devastated a significant part of coastal mainland Japan north of Tokyo. The loss of over 25,000 lives and major damage to residential, commercial and industrial parts of Japan have been overshadowed by round-the-clock news coverage concerning the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Exaggerated accident reports have prompted a debate on the wisdom of nuclear power generation. Thus, they have created a sentiment in Europe and North America discouraging expansion of their nuclear power sectors and encouraging a debate for their scaling down and eventual decommissioning.

  • How Japan Buys Support For Nuclear Power
There are 54 nuclear reactors in Japan. That’s about half the number in the US – for a country 1/25th the size. So how did nuclear become massive on a tiny island? Money, the NYT reports. Buying the people.

Even throughout the Fukushima disaster, popular opposition to Japan’s sprawling nuclear adoration has been weak. And why? The New York Times suggests a constant flow of easy cash is making the Japanese reluctant to kick their radioactive habit: “Nothing other than a nuclear plant will bring money here. That’s for sure,” explains a councilman from a small Japanese town. “What else can an isolated town like this do except host a nuclear plant?”

  • It was pointed out this morning by a member that on the tepco cam the units are not at the same angle as the towers and the thinking was that 4 may not be leaning and that rather the land on which the units stand is now at an angle . it would also explain them using the camera starting at #1 where the angle isnt as acute as it is at #4
    by elainekirk 5/31/2011 9:43:45 PM

  • The high beta radiation readings over the eastern US (which Baltimore is typical of) indicate that there is now a permanent cloud of isotopes like iodine and strontium in the upper atmosphere over the US. The current heat wave and 500 mb ridge actually wards off new particles, and high pressure brings down the ones already there.

  • I wonder if governments are now regretting not informing their citizens that there could possibly be a problem with radiation? When Chernobyl blew we only had newspapers and television news reports to keep us informed but informed we certainly were and there was no panic, there was no 'run' on foodstuffs so I can see no justification for their treating people with such contempt now
    by elainekirk 5/31/2011 9:48:48 PM

  • @elainekirk there are some real land oddities going on. People keep catching subtle things on different views that look skewed. There is a Daini photo of a small building that is leaning at a crazy angle and the ground is wavy but not broken. I think we may have the same thing going on at Daiichi the more views we are getting.
    by Nancy 5/31/2011 9:50:35 PM

  • @elainekirk It started out as not wanting the bad PR to now I think a fear of admitting the truth and the reality of how many people need to be moved. The is such a major big issue for an island as small and the main one is. I think anymore they are trying to avoid the inevitable.
    by Nancy 5/31/2011 9:52:21 PM

  • @Nancy I think it is turning out to be a prime example of how governments have become the servants of commerce instead of the citizens who pay them to serve their interests

  • @Panserbjorne9 'WARNING: The information that the children every other symptoms of low-dose exposure' Is this a blog where people report their symptoms to a doctor? I have translated looks a massive number of reports?
    by jt 5/31/2011 10:06:03 PM

  • @elainekirk Yes, it reminds me so much of some of the garbage in the US where the govt. is more a tool of big business than a service of the people. Bo mentioned a holiday in August, don't remember the name but it is the holiday where they light candles at their ancestrial homes to welcome back those that have died. People with family homes in the exclusion zone won't be able to do that.
    by Nancy 5/31/2011 10:10:19 PM

  • @jt I really can't tell because of the language barrier. I found it via a twitter stream, and it seemed very concerning...as if someone is compiling a list of the children who are presenting with those symptoms...

  • @Panserbjorne9 Yes exactly. The only data available will be children not turning up at school, I suppose.

  • @Nancy @all it is heartbreaking
    by elainekirk 5/31/2011 10:14:26 PM

  • @Panserbjorne9 bo has mentioned that issue with the holiday in August as something that will be extremely hard. He has mentioned it in most of his interviews if given the chance. Probably something we should keep in mind though I don't know if there is anything we could do other that make sure people know.
    by Nancy 5/31/2011 10:17:38 PM

  • @Panserbjorne9 We have a few people who speak Japanese who show up in a few hours on here. You might catch someone later if you ask on the board then. They might be able to help get past the translation issues.
