There was no change in radiation levels at the plant's monitoring posts and no one was injured, a Tokyo Electric official told reporters.
Some people at the plant suspect that a gas cylinder in the rubble may have been damaged and made the sound, the official said.
Tokyo Electric said it was gathering information on the cause of the sound and will give more details at a planned daily briefing from 4 a.m. EDT.

- @angie I think we need to clamp down on posts that are critical of other posts, everyone should feel they can post and that responses will be informative rather than critical re the content off their post.

Explosion heard near No.4 reactor
The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is looking into reports that a blast was heard on the south side of the plant's No.4 reactor.
Tokyo Electric Power Company says workers reported the sound at around 2:30 PM on Tuesday.
It says no fire or smoke has been spotted, and there have been no noticeable changes in radiation levels at monitoring posts within the compound. No injuries have been reported.
The utility says unmanned heavy machinery removing debris at the site may have damaged what may be a gas cylinder and caused it to explode.
