@RBeaner, yeah, seems that way! Funny how almost anytime you get to know a specific topic in detail you can spot errors about it even in higher-end publications.

Tepco's live cam isn't live because I can scroll forward, though perhaps the scroller is also a time machine!

In Japan, a Culture That Promotes Nuclear Dependency KASHIMA, Japan — When the Shimane nuclear plant was first proposed here more than 40 years ago, this rural port town put up such fierce resistance that the plant’s would-be operator, Chugoku Electric, almost scrapped the project. Angry fishermen vowed to defend areas where they had fished and harvested seaweed for generations. Two decades later, when Chugoku Electric was considering whether to expand the plant with a third reactor, Kashima once again swung into action: this time, to rally in favor. Prodded by the local fishing cooperative, the town assembly voted 15 to 2 to make a public appeal for construction of the $4 billion reactor.
@Ian You must be a wizard, and darn I can't time travel on it! Can You take us back to 3/10?

What's neat is if you move the scroll knob back and fourth you can see rising steam that isn't detectable viewing an normal speed www.tepco.co.jp And I've consistently seen a steam source that seems to be located just outside Unit 3, approx near the NW corner. Maybe it's a leaking pipe?
by Ian 5/31/2011 3:37:26 PM
@Bobby1 By God, it better be.
by radioguy 5/31/2011 3:39:55 PM
This steam source also seems to emanate from a narrow outlet. It could be closer to Unit 2 than 3, hard to say due to the angle of view. www.tepco.co.jp
by Ian 5/31/2011 3:41:21 PM
@Bobby1 The first paragraph of that deserves to be excerpted here: "Despite the managed media campaign by Tokyo Electric Company, the Japanese government and nuclear industry flacks worldwide, the 11 March 9.0 on the Richter scale earthquake, followed by a tsunami that off-lined TEPCO’s six reactor Daiichi Fukushima nuclear power complex represents a global mortal blow to the nuclear power industry, which had been optimistic of a renaissance following worldwide concerns about global warming. While TEPCO’s PR spin doctors along with Japanese government flacks will continue to parsimoniously dribble out information about the real situation at the stricken reactors while blandly assuring the Japanese population and the world that all is well even as nuclear lobbyists bleat “it can’t happen here,” all but the most obtuse are beginning to realize that catastrophes at nuclear power facilities, whether man-made (Chernobyl) or natural (Fukushima) have radioactive pollution consequences of potentially global significance."

All well in Fukushima-land?
by Markfm 5/31/2011 3:43:42 PM
@Markfm, no, all's hell in Fukuland. :(
by Ian 5/31/2011 3:47:12 PM
@radioguy Yes it better be, it is obvious from Tepco's three stooges act that man in general cannot be trusted with such a dangerous technology. Failure to abolish nuclear power would be global suicide.
by Bobby1 5/31/2011 3:47:28 PM
@Bobby1 If it wasn't already.
by radioguy 5/31/2011 3:49:14 PM
@Ian, what are you using to allow you to scroll it ? I don't have a time line on my pic. \
by wtm 5/31/2011 3:55:57 PM
@Ian, have you noticed the heat shimmer above the buildings? Don't see it away from the buildings, just above them !
by wtm 5/31/2011 4:00:12 PM
@Ian @wtm I was seeing this mask appearing every few frames on it earlier: i53.tinypic.com . It's not live, but recorded. They say the delay is 30sec.
@jt, I am not getting that...opening with Microsoft Windows Media Player !
by wtm 5/31/2011 4:04:04 PM
@wtm I'll try later it with a standalone viewer. But this mask looks quite tailored to me. Covers everything neatly. PS Don't use Windows.

Ola amigos, another brief type-bye for me. How is it going?
by bo 5/31/2011 4:10:00 PM
@bo, having fun in Europe ?
by wtm 5/31/2011 4:10:59 PM
@wtm yes. Work part is over, now just family and wine and good food. A nice break before returning to the stresses of the Japanese food supply!
by bo 5/31/2011 4:11:39 PM
@Bo, get to any of those fests yet ?
by wtm 5/31/2011 4:12:02 PM
@jt Just like the broadcasting 30 sec delay, only they don't want 7 seconds to cut out an F-bomb, they want 30 to get the feed down if anything interesting happens...
by radioguy 5/31/2011 4:12:27 PM
@wtm there was a big literature fest in Heidelberg, with accompanying wine fest and beer fest. That was lovely. Mostly just family time here in Barca.
by bo 5/31/2011 4:12:51 PM
@wtm, for me I see a scroll bar with scroll knob. I'm using a Mac, maybe that's a factor. ?? I can't even get the camera to image via the Flock browser.
by Ian 5/31/2011 4:13:18 PM
Any news on what the explosion near #4 was?
by bo 5/31/2011 4:14:06 PM
@Bo, if you want to site see, the railways have rail passes, get them for 2 days, weekend, or week. One fee and you can travel anyplace in Europe for that time frame. I used to hop a train, see a place, hop a train and sleep, wake up see something else, etc.
by wtm 5/31/2011 4:14:44 PM
@radioguy So someone at Tepco has the job of watching the cam!
by jt 5/31/2011 4:14:55 PM
@wtm, yes, I noticed what could be a 'heat shimmer' but just assumed it's video distortion. Don't know. Curious that from a little I've watched, it's always above the Units. You really need the scroll bar to see the steam!
by Ian 5/31/2011 4:15:35 PM
@bo, they were saying they hit a gas canister when they were moving some debris outside of #4.
by wtm 5/31/2011 4:15:48 PM
@wtm thanks. I know about those. This trip is pretty scripted. And while we are here in Barca family has our time pretty scheduled. So no meanderings this time around.
by bo 5/31/2011 4:16:53 PM
@Ian, don't notice it on the ground or looking at the base of the towers, midway up the towers you start to see it, and on top of the buildings, either heat or steam rising ?
by wtm 5/31/2011 4:17:29 PM
@Bo, have fun then !!!! Take plenty of pics...
by wtm 5/31/2011 4:17:51 PM
@wtm will do.
by bo 5/31/2011 4:19:10 PM
@jt Either that or they made it 30 seconds so they have time to get to the kill switch if something goes wrong. In this day of streaming media, you only include a delay if you think you might need to use it.
by radioguy 5/31/2011 4:20:02 PM
(Though from streaming audio overseas, I can tell you there can be a 45 second delay from net hops.)
by radioguy 5/31/2011 4:21:13 PM
@radioguy They say *Expect a 30 second time lag in the system delivery of the picture due to its communication path. * Images may be unclear under conditions of strong backlight, bad weather and nighttime darkness. * The service will be suspended during maintenance of equipment or other trouble.

Wednesday, June 1, 2011 Chernobyl 'jumper' airs Fukushima fears
Singapore — Sergei Belyakov, a scientist who helped clean up debris after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, is worried about Japanese workers now risking their lives to contain the aftermath of core meltdowns at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. search.japantimes.co.jp
"I really feel sorry for the situation in Fukushima, honestly," the 55-year-old "jumper" in Chernobyl said.

TEPCO can claim it is censorship to maintain "morality", in line with GOJ.

Have people seen the new radiation map from May 27? www.tepco.co.jp
by Nancy 5/31/2011 4:35:12 PM
@Nancy, morning !!! Have you noticed on the new TEPCO cam that you can see heat shimmer above the buildings, none on the ground. Also the 2 towers on the right seem to have a tilt to them in relation to the edges of #1 & 2. Light pole is definitely tilted. During the day, if you look closely at the front tower, you can see several of the X braces on them that are mangled, particular on the back side of the tower (side near #3 building). I have to climb those things, I look for those out of place things on them.

Oil Spill, Blast Hit Crippled Japan Nuke Plant www.youtube.com I llike the term " Blast Hit Crippled Japan Nuke Plant ' Sounds that the power plant got a " Blat Hit " Upgrade....
by Majj 5/31/2011 4:49:34 PM
@wtm I have not looked at it closely yet. The lightpole is very skewed. The whole cam is at an angle right now. When they get better daylight I will try grabbing a screen shot and see what I can determine. I did find a photo of Daini last week where a small utility building was sitting at a very odd angle as was the ground around it. The pavement wasn't cracked and the building wasn't damaged, the whole mess was just at an angle. I have seen odd sinking like that before from unstable ground underneath. I think we may be seeing it on a bigger scale at Daiini along with some buildings that are losing integrity, leaning or bowing etc. I think the heat waves are from the reactors and SFPs.
