  • @LM Thank you. I came up with same figures. Trying to get my head around the implications. It really is not nice being in Japan with two small children right now!

  • @Will I had no idea you were in Japan...where are you living?
    by LM 6/5/2011 3:57:08 AM

  • @LM Kochi, on the Pacific coast of Shikoku. Relatively far from Fukushima, but increasingly not far enough!
    by Will 6/5/2011 3:58:53 AM

  • @Will I'm definitely glad you're in Shikoku.. My heart goes out to all of you! I lived in Tokyo during my high school years and have a personal connection to Japan. I only hope that the info we discuss helps you even a small amount...given media constraints. The world needs to support all of you.
    by LM 6/5/2011 4:03:11 AM

  • @LM Thank you for that. The information this blog discusses really does help. I invariably have the JMA website up for tsunami warnings (we are 2 metres above sea-level) and this site up just so I feel connected and can pick up things quickly.

  • @Will I do believe that we need to keep a spot light on this...Here in the US people don't realize the significance of this disaster. I wish some high profile individuals would start screaming!! The world is being lulled to sleep by the nuclear-industrial complex. I honestly feel that if the average American had a better education...there would be more voices out there....well...enough of my soapbox. You have our support!!

  • @Angie Yes we are. Not an easy decision, as I have been here since 1993, aside from a break for a PhD in the UK. Our eldest daughter is now permanently out of elementary school. My wife was called in to talk to the principal....very interesting/depressing insight into the Board of Education's stance on radiation. The principal was nice enough, and is even thinking of buying his own Geiger counter, but there is just no official concern beyond avoiding those dangerous rumours! The UK government is seriously playing down this crisis in Japan, and the visa process is a nightmare. No concessions made. So we are off to France early July!

  • @Maureen Interesting GE scrambling..after all this they can't possibly say that this design is safe given potential seismic issues or human error. Thanks for posting.

  • @LM - I actually meant to post the NRC letter- not the GE page but, yes, scrambling they are.

  • In addition, licensees are requested to indicate
the incremental cost of installing an ac independent design in comparison to a
design relying on availability of ac power. In the absence of such

information, the staff will use an estimate of $750,000. This estimate is
based on modification of prevalent existing designs to bypass the standby gas
treatment system ducting and includes piping, electrical design changes, and
modifications to procedures and training..................... I'm assuming Tepco didn't install ac systemindependent of external power sources?

  • @Maureen Burke , clearly GE is on the defensive. Tepco was recently stating that the quake shook unit 1 WITHIN design basis and yet there was damage. Dean thought TEPCO can not hold GE responsible for design flaws. In any case, such finding would be quite damaging to GE's reputation.

  • Radioactive water leak to be prevented for 3 days
Tokyo Electric Power Company has decided to increase the transfer of radioactive water by about 1,500 tons to a facility at the troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The company says the transfer can keep contaminated water from leaking outside for about 3 days.

More than 105,000 tons of contaminated water is thought to have accumulated in the basements of the reactor and turbine buildings. An additional 500 tons or so flows into the basements per day as a result of the injection of water into the reactors.

The situation is raising concern about the possible overflow of contaminated water.

On Saturday, TEPCO obtained Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency permission to increase the water transfer from its initial plan. It began transferring 12 tons of water per hour from the basement of the Number 2 turbine building to the basement of a facility for nuclear waste. www3.nhk.or.jp
