Blackout hits Fukushima nuclear plant's Nos. 1, 2 units
    […]
Also Wednesday, TEPCO revealed a plan to leave a door linking the reactor and turbine buildings of the No. 1 unit open to reduce humidity in the reactor buildings later this month and help improve work efficiency within them.
Since radioactive materials within the reactor building could leak to the outside through the opened door, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, the government’s nuclear safety agency, has instructed the utility to report the expected effects of the move on the environment by June 15.
    […]

4000mSv/hr radiation in unit 1 reported last Saturday
Is this to be exposed to environment through 'open door'?
    by jt 6/8/2011 11:51:31 AM

  • @edano Its nearly 10pm so off to bed soon.
    by AustralianCannonball 6/8/2011 11:52:13 AM

  • @AustralianCannonball : very scary. i think most japanese do not want to know it. they just want their peace. they do not even care about the mox problem.
    by Edano 6/8/2011 11:53:03 AM

  • @all That is one of the lower readings. I had to get him to go to a landmark!.

  • @AustralianCannonball the units are microsieverts right?
    by FradyKat 6/8/2011 11:54:23 AM

  • @edano what does this really mean for Tokyo?. I'm no expert. Is this really serious for them?. Based on the assumption he is using his device properly.
    by AustralianCannonball 6/8/2011 11:54:44 AM

  • yday we had readings from tokyo parks in 2m and 50 cm height, they were scaring, too.
    by Edano 6/8/2011 11:55:08 AM

  • @fradykat I can 100 percent confirm its microsieverts.
    by AustralianCannonball 6/8/2011 11:55:16 AM

  • @edano What were they reading?.

  • @edano I have to go to bed now but on closing is Tokyo now an unsafe place to live?. I believe they could be getting 50 millisieverts per year at this rate in places.
    by AustralianCannonball 6/8/2011 12:02:14 PM

  • Based on ground readings.
    by AustralianCannonball 6/8/2011 12:02:58 PM

  • @AustralianCannonball : at least for children and people working outside (like street workers) this is not safe.
    by Edano 6/8/2011 12:03:21 PM

  • I haven't kept a record but I think the medical institute reading has gone up from 20or30 in late march
    by cat 6/8/2011 12:03:40 PM

  • @edano Thats sort of what I was thinking. Imagine kids playing in the backyard or the park. And correct me if I'm wrong but this sort of radiation from nuclear fission is also more dangerous?.
    by AustralianCannonball 6/8/2011 12:04:57 PM

  • @AustralianCannonball : children eat and inhale sand. they have a higher internal rad risk.
    by Edano 6/8/2011 12:06:14 PM

  • @all Goodnight. I guess as things progress we will know more about the radiation. I dont think these plants are worth the risk. Sorry if you are pro-nuke. I dont get it.
    by AustralianCannonball 6/8/2011 12:07:50 PM

  • nuke energy is the biggest error in man's history and if we go on, we will pollute the entire planet and risk our future.
    by Edano 6/8/2011 12:10:06 PM

  • @edano Agreed. Now my wife is yelling at me so need to turn off now.
    by AustralianCannonball 6/8/2011 12:11:11 PM

  • it seems the people of tokyo are waking up slowly. lots of readings by now.
    by Edano 6/8/2011 12:13:41 PM

  • The seawater got into the Daini plant, located 10 kilometers south of the Daiichi complex, when it was flooded by the massive tsunami on March 11. While the tsunami knocked out power at the Daiichi plant, causing a partial meltdown of fuel inside some of its reactors, the Daini complex was safely shut down after the disaster. According to plant operator Tepco, the water is currently sitting in reactor and turbine buildings, and other facilities, raising concerns that it might corrode piping, causing the leakage of radioactive material. online.wsj.com
    by Majj 6/8/2011 12:17:57 PM

  • they should build up an independent radiation monitoring network with central data processing, that shouldn't be a problem in internet times. they must get better information than the official.
    by Edano 6/8/2011 12:18:04 PM

  • @Edano I think we have a RUSTING Nuclear power plant....
    by Majj 6/8/2011 12:20:19 PM

  • @Majj : daini is toast. saltwater is poison for plants.
    by Edano 6/8/2011 12:22:41 PM

  • @Edano The ridiculous is that in Brazil they use salt water to refrigerate a fresh water designed plant. ..Every thin got corrode and the have to change every thing....
    by Majj 6/8/2011 12:24:17 PM

  • if i remember it correctly, they had cooling failure as well and used seawater cooling in daini.
    by Edano 6/8/2011 12:24:53 PM

  • Morning all. Should these Tokyo readings in posts here be gathered up and put into a post on the site? They seem concerning.

Oh and yea Daini is toast. Seawater sitting in the buildings for 3 months? The fact that it is impacting electrical systems is concerning. They have everything in shutdown but need to keep cooling it.
    by lillymunster 6/8/2011 12:25:23 PM

  • @Majj : be careful. that plant is not safe anymore !
    by Edano 6/8/2011 12:25:30 PM

  • @lillymunster : it would be good to collect tokyo data. but it would be better if the japanese do it.

  • We have 2 Nuclera power plant running and one in construction, . Locate betuing Rio de janeiro and Sao paulo.. It is in the half way of the 2 bigger South American City's. 20.000.000 people. They are building number 3 .Now I want to see if German s Nuclear ban will stop the construction here. The 3 are German made....
    by Majj 6/8/2011 12:30:11 PM

  • we should make a tokyo site and at least post the links and cannonball's videos. maybe there is anyone willing to analyse and interprete the data. tokyo is getting into focus, that's for sure.
