    VIENNA —

About 20 nations in Asia and Oceania will launch a joint project next month to research the impact of radioactive materials released into the Pacific Ocean from Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, sources close to the International Atomic Energy Agency said Tuesday.

Under the four-year project, approved by the IAEA’s 35-nation board which includes Japan, participating countries including China, Indonesia and Australia will conduct the survey while receiving technical support from the IAEA, they said. Countries including the United States and Japan are expected to fund the project, whose budget comes to about 1 million euros. www.japantoday.com IAEA hmmmm

Tokyo Electric Power Company says it is making final preparations to activate special purification equipment to treat radioactive waste water at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The company plans to start up the system on June 15th.

On Wednesday, TEPCO tested the control board of a US-developed device that adsorbs radioactive cesium. It also tested the pumps of a French device that uses special chemicals to settle radioactive substances in the water

  • Nuclear talks split over inspections

Officials from over 30 nations have agreed to strengthen cooperation in case of a nuclear accident, but remain divided over inspections of neighboring countries' nuclear plants.

Energy officials and ministers from more than 30 countries attended talks on nuclear safety in Paris on Tuesday. The French government hosted the meeting.

Participants agreed to create cross-border response teams to fight a nuclear accident, on the grounds that radiation crosses borders once an accident occurs.

But they were split over the extent to which countries can inspect neighbors' nuclear safety measures.

  • Fisheries Agency opposes Fukushima Daini nuke plant water release plan

    TOKYO, June 8, Kyodo
Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s plan to release water containing traces of radioactive materials from the tsunami-hit Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant to the sea has been stopped due to stiff opposition from the Fisheries Agency, sources close to the mater said Wednesday.

Although the utility known as TEPCO told the agency that it will release the water after removing radioactive substances to an undetectable level, the agency is not approving the plan, leaving the fate of the 3,000 tons of the water accumulated in the nuclear power station, located 15 kilometers south from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi power plant, undecided.

If the water remains in tanks for a prolonged time, the storage facility may be corroded by salt in the water. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Experts: Seabed off Miyagi sank before March 11

Researchers have found that the seabed off Japan's northeastern coast had been gradually sinking days before the March 11th earthquake.

A team from Tohoku University analyzed data taken at 2 monitoring sites 80 kilometers off the Oshika Peninsula in Miyagi Prefecture. In late May, the team recovered monitoring devices from the seafloor at a depth of 1,200 meters.

The data shows that the sea bottom subsided 15 centimeters in a magnitude 7.3 quake on March 9th and one meter in a magnitude 9.0 quake on March 11th.

The data also indicates that the seabed had been sinking at a rate of several centimeters per day between the 2 tremors.
The researchers say the finding may help them to unravel the mechanism of an imminent gigantic earthquake.

The team leader, Associate Professor Ryota Hino, says they have captured a phenomenon that precedes a major earthquake. He says they hope to use this information to improve the predictions of major quakes.

  • Suicides on rise in disaster-battered Japan

More than 3,200 people committed suicide in Japan in May, NHK broadcaster reports. The tally is 18 per cent higher than a year earlier, the National Police Agency says. The highest number of suicides was reported in Tokyo – 325. It was followed by 210 in Kanagawa prefecture and 206 in Osaka prefecture. The police agency says it does not know whether the increase is linked to the March disaster, but it will make detailed analyses of individual cases. However, until March, Japan witnessed the decline of suicides since last year. In quake and tsunami-hit Fukushima prefecture the suicide toll increased from 19 to 68. A massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami hit Japan’s northeast on March 11, killing and leaving missing some 28,000 people and triggering a nuclear catastrophe at Fukushima-1 power plant. The disaster also affected industry and pushed Japan’s economy into recession. rt.com

  • Report From Tokyo: The Spread of Radioactivity. On June 7, Japanese authorities officially doubled the release of radioactivity for the initial days of the crisis to 770,000 terabecquerels, bringing the total close to 40 percent of official emissions estimates made by the Soviets during the Chernobyl crisis.

Radiation from the plant has spread over 600 square kilometers (230 square miles). Soil samples showed one site with radiation from Cesium-137 exceeding 5 million becquerels per square meter about 25 kilometers to the northwest of the Fukushima plant. www.huffingtonpost.com
