  • @Edano @Angie : because still too hot.
    by Edano at 4:50 PM
Uhm, that doesn't make sense, they did that in Chernobyl or did i get that wrong ?
    by Veenie 6/15/2011 11:52:29 PM

  • @Veenie : twice quoted: "On 10 May, the fire finally subsided; it now seems possible that the graphite simply burnt itself out. The nitrogen was found, and the subterranean heat exchanger built, but by mid-May the temperature of the core had dropped to 270C"
    by Edano 6/15/2011 11:53:16 PM

  • but this: "Prianichnikov himself was sent in with temperature and radiation probes to discover how long they had before the core burned through the two metres of concrete foundations" does not seem to be done in fuku. they have to check the state of the corium !
    by Edano 6/15/2011 11:54:28 PM

  • I do not like the "superior" style....see ya !
    by Veenie 6/15/2011 11:55:15 PM

  • they must measure the core temperature. that is important. or not ?
    by Edano 6/15/2011 11:56:48 PM

  • @Edano I agree with "check the state of the corium " , and prehaps liquid N would be usefull, but I like to dee facts stated as such, and lets lick this problem. Liq N might have a significant place in isolating the radioactive water from the ocean.
    by RBeaner 6/15/2011 11:58:10 PM

  • @RBeaner well, there are lots of substances that cool better than just water. something is wrong with what they're doing. or they do it and do not tell us.
    by Edano 6/16/2011 12:02:46 AM

  • I have to wonder why they have not tried anything else? Are they still borating the water? Is there still reaction to stop or just decay heat? I wondered if some sort of boron slurry (thick mixture) would help?
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 12:20:20 AM

  • @Edano They need to just take away the decay heat. I don't think (my own opinion) based on what Iv'e read.. that the corium can "burn through" the basemat. It's not a matter of cooling, but a matter of heat removal.

    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 12:33:14 AM

  • @Edano silica and sand (same) shut down the reaction at chernobyl. All by accident or incident, it wasn't firefighting, or engineers, it was the "secondary shield" melting with the primary. The secondary had 23 thousand tons of sand in it, for shielding. When all melted down, the corium mixed with the sand and solidified. Not by plan or action, it was basically luck.

  • HIDDEN AGENDA: Moves to oust Kan may be linked to politicians in TEPCO's pocket. Kan's complete independence from TEPCO money--and pressure--may be the real reason so many lawmakers are trying to push him out the door. His calls to shift Japan away from nuclear energy and to break TEPCO into separate companies that handle power generation and power transmission threaten some very powerful special interests. www.asahi.com

  • @Peter Melzer very interesting. Why would they have hydrogen build up in the turbine building? I was under the assumption the turbine buildings were much lower radiation risk.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 2:01:47 AM

  • @lillymunster , in the turbine building among all places, strange? But then we liked the breeze of fresh air. if the issue was not that serious, it almost makes you crack.

#Nebraska: Evacuations, flooded containment building, fires, toxic gases, fuel pool cooling problems @ Fort Calhoun Station #1 Nuclear Plant

  • back for a bit
    by dean 6/16/2011 2:49:42 AM

  • I am seriously asking myself, why some of these respected Tweeters do this.here is someone countering this hype.

An Omahan on June 15, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Sir, I found your website while following the news about the flooding. I’m a Nebraskan and aware with the Fort Calhoun plant. However, when I did some research, I found no record of a “level 4 emergency.” There is a level 1 alert, issued on 6/6, regarding the flooding. In response, the Omaha Public Power District built levees around the plant, which remains dry. There was also a level 2 alert, issued on 6/7, when an electrical fire caused a cooling pump to fail. According to the report, the fire was extinguished shortly thereafter and the pump was restored to working order. No contaminated water left the facility.

Furthermore, the plant isn’t even running right now. It was shut down in April for refueling, and when the flooding started, OPPD decided to leave it idle until August.

Yes, I think these reports are accurate. Nebraska is not a populous state. Everyone here knows someone, and there have been no rumors of nuclear contamination. If something disastrous happened, OPPD could never keep a lid on it. Next time, please do some research first. If you are a scientist, then you should know how important it is to get your facts straight.
    by Veenie 6/16/2011 2:51:51 AM

  • @Veenie I have not seen anything new. Have you checked any of the local media?

  • Some local media to fact check. Most local media around here is all over any time there is a minor crime. If there was an evacuation or something major they would be freaking out. You should see the local media around here when there are storms. :-) We even have drinking games to go along with the weather emergency broadcasts.

  • @veenie, I did some research on the "level 4 emergency" LOL. www.houseoffoust.com
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 2:58:51 AM

  • Veenie the info machineeie.... I saw in that link were they said... The Ft Calhoun rating is a level 4 alert, not accident level 4. There are concerns that the spent fuel cooling could be lost. Right now, everything is under control. The reactor has been shut down for months.

Alert 4 is the lowest level of concern.
