  • @Nancy did you get the video of the dog rescue from the plant? Video released of dog rescue from TEPCO grounds in Fukushima www.examiner.com

  • @lm A a faulty valve in either 3 or 1 (think3) if it had been working at the time of the crisis....
    by elainekirk 6/15/2011 9:03:42 PM

  • @dean Cool stamp. I did some looking around off of that atomic history website you posted last week. The atomic cruise ship was pretty cool. They had ship china similar to that stamp with the ship name on it. Going for some pretty serious cash too. Found a few photos of the ship when it was in operation.

  • Organised crime cashing in on quake clean-up
In the aftermath of the devastating March tsunami, Japan's underworld made a rare display of philanthropy, handing out emergency supplies to survivors, sometimes days before aid agencies arrived.
Three months later, however, the yakuza appears to have dispensed with largesse and is instead hoping to cash in on the daunting clean-up effort in dozens of ruined towns and villages. www.hindu.com

  • @Panserbjorne9 had not seen that yet.
    by lillymunster 6/15/2011 9:05:13 PM

  • @Elaine Ahhhh. Thanks. I wish Kyodo hadn't blocked access!
    by LM 6/15/2011 9:05:30 PM

  • nice @ lilly.. that stamp came from a web page describing ATOMS FOR PEACE back when Eisenhower signed into law the first start of regulation called the ATOMIC ENERGY ACT which through many many iterations became the NRC.. I wanted to look into that with our group with the idea that the 1954 ENERGY ACT. it was time for overhaul
    by dean 6/15/2011 9:06:41 PM

  • @RBeaner : it is all about energy exchange. water has a specific heat capacity and you need more of it (or cooler) if the temperature (energy) difference is lower between inside and outside.
    by Edano 6/15/2011 9:06:58 PM

  • "The raw unedited Tepco cam video stream of tonights steam/smoke show can be downloaded from here (cut after fog obscures the entire image) : martin.torchedinduction.com" <-- Admin/mod please remove this sticky, video have been deleted from the server - Thanks in advance
    by WolfDK 6/15/2011 9:07:07 PM

  • it is always good to make extrapolations: when the inside and outside temperature is the same, 100°C, you will have no evaporation anymore, and of course, no cooling possible.
    by Edano 6/15/2011 9:09:57 PM

  • @Edano Yes, but in exchanger, you can turn up the pumps and a Tower (rainfall) you can increase the release, to achieve the same cooling..? Is this statement right or wrong?
    by RBeaner 6/15/2011 9:09:57 PM

  • @RBeaner : but we have no tower in fuku ? (before thinking of your question )
    by Edano 6/15/2011 9:11:11 PM

  • @RBeaner : you need either more water or cooler water.
    by Edano 6/15/2011 9:11:52 PM

  • in fuku more water would be a problem.
    by Edano 6/15/2011 9:13:22 PM

  • @Edano Yes, cold seawater, but we were actually refering to calhoun. And my point exactly, more exchange water (waterfall or exchanger unit).
    by RBeaner 6/15/2011 9:13:25 PM

  • the best way to look at the heat removal is to do a temp balance then it becomes evident
    by dean 6/15/2011 9:15:24 PM

  • Good article. Until the last, absurd paragraph.

    by Panserbjorne9 6/15/2011 9:15:42 PM

  • some of the prints of the fuku show the temps around the system including the heat exchangers.. so one can see the temp difference out of reactor and in.. etc.. and the aux systems temps
    by dean 6/15/2011 9:16:13 PM

  • @RBeaner same effect, whatever u use, you always exchange energy and you need a energy difference.
    by Edano 6/15/2011 9:16:23 PM

  • @all Maybe I'm just being stupid but does anyone have a theory on why we're seeing a steady stream of grey smoke from all units at Fuku interspersed with the usual white steam. Wasn't sure if it could be superheated zircaloy...thoughts?
    by LM 6/15/2011 9:21:43 PM

  • @LM I have not had a chance to look at the cams today. Is it happening at certain times?
    by lillymunster 6/15/2011 9:25:30 PM

  • @Lilly It seems to be constant now. Even overnight you can see that it's darker.
    by LM 6/15/2011 9:26:28 PM

  • @Lilly It's often ..at least during the day...only wisps but it's definitely different.
    by LM 6/15/2011 9:27:08 PM

  • @LM I seem to remember at the time when we now know the cladding was vaporizing in R1-3 cores, that we had a lot of questions about the grey steam and cladding.
    by radioguy 6/15/2011 9:27:56 PM

  • LOL. Ian found this. Omaha Power has issued a flood rumor control page. They point out that the "level 4 emergency" was both not used terminology or an accurate statement of plant status. :-)

  • I wonder if they're having trouble keeping rods covered they might emit grey smoke and then when they inundate them at night it causes the huge steam shows...
    by LM 6/15/2011 9:30:31 PM

  • I know mox cladding burns with a pale grey or so I read
    by elainekirk 6/15/2011 9:31:30 PM

  • @lillymunster Damn those harmful rumors.
    by radioguy 6/15/2011 9:32:09 PM

  • Or is it Dam.
    by radioguy 6/15/2011 9:32:24 PM

  • @LM I will try to check in on it more and grab some screen shots if I see anything. If we can match it up with old photos of similar that might give a clue what is going on. There were smoke photos on 3 after the explosion a few days later that had grey smoke and were assumed to be fuel burn of some kind.
    by lillymunster 6/15/2011 9:32:30 PM

  • @radioguy a rumor ate my sister. :-)
    by lillymunster 6/15/2011 9:32:49 PM

  • @Lilly Thanks! I'm curious whether or not the cladding will emit smoke before burning occurs.
    by LM 6/15/2011 9:34:52 PM

  • LM I did some reading on the cladding and there are conditions that will form the gray conditions, whether or not it could be in significant amounts to show up as smoke is a mystery to me. the conditions have to be just right tho and "if" for some reason the water level goes down or fuel is on the brink of being uncovered it may be possible.. we need to research like lilly says

  • @radioguy What said rumor might look like. www.houseoffoust.com

by lillymunster via Houseoffoust 6/15/2011 9:43:09 PM

  • @dean Thanks. It's been bugging me because the nature of the emissions seems different. The puffy white steam is now mainly light grey and this has been going on for a few days. It seems to have changed for all the reactors. At night there seems to be more of a mix..where you'd see more steam anyway. I could just be going cam crazy. LOL!

    by MaryW 6/15/2011 9:46:11 PM

  • my opinion only .. no nuclear plant show have to prepare for high water.. that's an admission of unpreparedness.. maybe getting more diesel fuel on site or running in extra diesel generators .. but I'll be they have sandbaggers working like md..
    by dean 6/15/2011 9:47:46 PM

  • @dean The video in my post shows the sandbaggers :)
    by MaryW 6/15/2011 9:49:04 PM

  • @nancy those teeth!!!!!
    by elainekirk 6/15/2011 9:50:21 PM

  • @dean Like Gundersen mentioned. Sandbags and nuclear power plant should not be in the same sentence.
    by lillymunster 6/15/2011 9:54:05 PM

  • save those video's just in case MaryW we may want to identify sand bags..
    by dean 6/15/2011 9:55:06 PM

  • @dean Sandbags filled with nuke sludge
