@lillymunster Re the yellow thing - I meant barrels similar to these [which are said to have leaked uranium at Tokai]

    by es via Spiegel.de 6/16/2011 3:24:15 PM

  • Veenie posted this on the other page. It debunks a bunch of the rumors going around about Ft. Calhoun and also addresses the no fly zone. Someone contacted the FAA and got an actual answer for the no fly zone. djysrv.blogspot.com
There was another rumor started by the same person that started the last one. He claimed Ft. Calhoun is a spent fuel storage facility for all of NE and possibly other states. Facts on that claim (it isn't true either) www.houseoffoust.com

  • @es, I had not thought of that, that they use that yellow for rad waste. Could they have some sort of sludge holding tank that might be painted that yellow to signify rad waste? Thanks for pointing this out.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 3:29:41 PM

  • @lillymunster yw. I don't know if larger versions exist. What kind of dimensions are you assuming for the yellow thing in the pic?
    by es 6/16/2011 3:33:17 PM

  • @es I need to do some comparative measurements of the size and the curve. Rough guess would be maybe something 6-8ft diameter?
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 3:36:34 PM

  • @Bobby1 in the pool videos you can see some rod assemblies but it is such a mess it is hard to tell what else is or is not there or the shape it is in.

  • " General Electric Co. and other U.S. enterprises took the helm in building the Fukushima No. 1 plant's No. 1 reactor, which was TEPCO's first nuclear reactor. The contract was called "full turn-key," which meant that TEPCO had only to turn the key to start operations. All technical questions were left to the U.S. contractors.

Design of the No. 2 and newer reactors, where Toshiba Corp., Hitachi Ltd. and other Japanese manufacturers had greater roles to play, also basically followed the playbook of the No. 1 reactor. There was not enough time to review the design to account for different natural disasters in Japan and the United States, including tsunami.

"We built them the way they told us to build them, because they said they wouldn't guarantee safety unless we built them according to the U.S. specifications," recalled a former senior official at the former Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

Forty years have passed since the Fukushima No. 1 reactor began operations, but the design was never reviewed.

"Emergency power generators are heavy and they cause vibrations. Their relocation would have meant radical redesign of entire buildings," said the TEPCO source. "

  • @lillymunster The last I checked, gross beta concentrations have not been updated since May 23. The isotope measurements stopped altogether in early May. There are still gamma and beta count data, but they only let you download 400 observations at a time. One would have to download and merge 800 datasets to do the same analysis on these data that I recently did for gross beta.

  • Hi all! Just an observation...Big steam/smoke show again this morning..I think they're watering SFPs every 3-4 days at the same time when it's still dark so no one will see the incredible amounts of steam. They must be very hot!
    by LM 6/16/2011 5:14:37 PM

  • @LM I read something about that the other day, the watering the SFP every 4 days..
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:16:48 PM

  • @Lilly The timing is right then. The really big steam shows correspond. I wonder if the grey smoke increases as we get closer to the 4th day as water evaporates off potentially exposing small parts of assemblies? I'll have to keep track.

  • @LM That is what I believe as well, doing the work under cover of darkness. The people would be horrified to see this going on during the day. They would all be afraid to go outside. Doing this while most of the population is sleeping, keeps them "safer" than being out during the day, working/playing/living in it.
    by deb 6/16/2011 5:22:53 PM

  • @deb people have speculated that they could be watering at night to hide it. We happen to be in a different time zone , most people are asleep in Japan right now.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:24:52 PM

  • There were also two "light flashes" with the steam show, one was very clearly a floodlight, I could see the beams going outward in big screen viewing. So, no two explosions.
    by deb 6/16/2011 5:25:11 PM

  • @LM Good point, yea, if the grey smoke corresponds to before a steam show I think we have an answer.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:25:45 PM

  • @all On rainy days the steam is worse as well..makes sense...the pools are incredibly hot. It must really bum them out when it rains and the steam is clearly visible for the world to see!
    by LM 6/16/2011 5:25:46 PM

  • So if the flashes increase when they have a steam show would that mean there is an increase in radiation when they do?
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:26:30 PM

  • @all I wonder..if they water assemblies that have active zircaloy degradation it might release more rads with the increase in steam production?
    by LM 6/16/2011 5:28:47 PM

  • @LM :
TEPCO to begin work for cooling fuel pool

At the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant, work is likely to begin Saturday to install a circulatory cooling system for the fuel pool of the Number 3 reactor.

Operator Tokyo Electric Power Company has been pouring water onto the fuel pool from outside once every 4 days. But it estimates that the temperature is still above 60 degrees Celsius.

TEPCO plans to install a heat exchange device to cool the water and then return it to the fuel pool.

If work goes smoothly, then full operation of the circulatory cooling system is expected to start early next month. TEPCO says it wants to lower the temperature to around 40 degrees Celsius about a month later.

Days after the outbreak of the nuclear accident at the plant in March, 2 Self-Defense Force helicopters dumped seawater over the Number 3 reactor to cool the fuel pool.

A similar circulatory cooling system has already been installed for the Number 2 reactor, and it planned for the Number 1 and 4 reactors. But the outlook for Number 4 is unclear because a hydrogen blast damaged its piping, a vital component in the cooling system.

  • Two of the steam shows correlated with large releases of radioactive iodine. So this is a fission issue, not just a thermal one.
    by Bobby1 6/16/2011 5:31:13 PM

  • @Edano Thanks! I thought I also read it somewhere...that was it.
    by LM 6/16/2011 5:32:10 PM

  • now then all you smokers just realised a Jaranese site that is trying to get news out in English spent a lot of time on the last steam show and I thought it meant it was 'different' to the others but like you say it is just that the others happen at night so are you home now @deb what about getting in touch with them matome.naver.jp maybe they could help inform the public in Japan?
    by elainekirk 6/16/2011 5:32:50 PM

  • @Bobby1 Given how long they're waiting between watering and the grey smoke I've been seeing I wouldn't be surprised if we were seeing some criticality as the zircaloy is damaged. Hard to be sure though..
