  • If there are spiked releases on those days they water we should try to track both things on a calendar with days of the steam shows and rad releases for that day. If we see a 4 day pattern ongoing for both we have it. I consider that to be significant and should be made known.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:35:46 PM

  • @Lilly I agree..I'll start taking notes on my observations.
    by LM 6/16/2011 5:37:10 PM

  • @LM good catch. Knowing their watering schedule sure helps.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:37:53 PM

  • IMO the steam shows result from two things: TEPCO watering their plants, and earthquakes. @elaine that would be a thought, will check out the site later, I have attend to things and won't have time to review it. Just popped in to comment on the steam show :)

  • Blame the US?
Why have alarms not been sounded about radiation exposure in the US?

Nuclear operator Exelon Corporation has been among Barack Obama's biggest campaign donors, and is one of the largest employers in Illinois where Obama was senator. Exelon has donated more than $269,000 to his political campaigns, thus far. Obama also appointed Exelon CEO John Rowe to his Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future.

Dr Shoji Sawada is a theoretical particle physicist and Professor Emeritus at Nagoya University in Japan.
He is concerned about the types of nuclear plants in his country, and the fact that most of them are of US design.

"Most of the reactors in Japan were designed by US companies who did not care for the effects of earthquakes," Dr Sawada told Al Jazeera. "I think this problem applies to all nuclear power stations across Japan."

Using nuclear power to produce electricity in Japan is a product of the nuclear policy of the US, something Dr Sawada feels is also a large component of the problem.

  • @bobby, what rad readings are you going by? The ones TEPCO announces for in the plant or some of the METI data for the area?
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:38:24 PM

  • @lillymunster @LM The CTBTO iodine readings. They seem to be fairly regular. The pool readings don't give you the day-to-day sense of what is happening.

  • @joniver That is the second story today where Japan blames the US or more specifically GE for all of this. If they want to go after GE more power to them. We as a country are not responsible for GE's actions. I do personally consider GE to be somewhat at fault. There were so many whistle blowers about the Mark 1 design faults. All GE ever did was character assasinate people and deny the faults.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:40:51 PM

  • @Lilly Thanks. It just seemed too cyclical. The units are emitting 24/7 but the big steam happens at the same time every few days. Too much of a coincidence to me.
    by LM 6/16/2011 5:40:51 PM

  • @Bobby1 Is CTBTO still putting that data out or how can we find it?
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:41:51 PM

  • @deb I mentioned my totally out there thought related to the steam shows and quakes and that frequently we see a steam show before a quake in the area. It seems too preposterous to imagine but we have multiple instances of a quake right after a steam show starts. I don't know how it would be possible though for watering to have any impact.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:43:33 PM

  • @lillymunster Graphs at translate.google.com Japan data at www.cpdnp.jp Nothing has been released lately. There was a story recently in which scientists were begging for the data to be released.
    by Bobby1 6/16/2011 5:45:48 PM

  • @lillymunster The GE design may be faulty but placing it on a highly seismic island? Seems to me both parties must share responsibilities.
    by joniver 6/16/2011 5:46:04 PM

  • I just closed the unmod board
    by elainekirk 6/16/2011 5:46:20 PM

  • @Bobby1 OK, wasn't sure if it was the same thing the scientists were complaining about. I read that the norwegian group doing modeling were using that data an now have nothing.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:46:45 PM

  • @elainekirk Why?
    by joniver 6/16/2011 5:46:58 PM

  • @elainekirk yea it was getting more than a little out of control.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:47:01 PM

  • @all Another possibility...I'm pretty sure it's raining at the moment. It's also a possibility that the steam shows are directly proportional to the amount of rain they're getting at any given moment. The fog also seems to roll in on the big steam show mornings when the cloud ceiling is low. Are they publishing the SFP watering dates at all?
    by LM 6/16/2011 5:47:12 PM

  • @joniver your right that it is not all GE's fault. If you look at the sites chosen for US GE reactors of the same design they share some of the same ignorance of the surroundings and risk. Ft. Calhoun and Cooper station in NE are prime examples.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 5:48:22 PM

  • @joniver because I dont like seeing people attacked publicly whether by insinuation or otherwise I will inform the other mods and a decision will be made by all as I acted without mandate
    by elainekirk 6/16/2011 5:48:59 PM

  • @LM Something else we could track along with it is the weather data when a steam show starts. I found if I google "fukushima current weather" Google displays the current weather as the first result with wind, humidity etc.

  • just received this message "The creator has closed this event, thanks for participating" can anyone enlighten me as to why?

  • yeah i got that message too, anyone know the link to Jim Carver's site?
    by Bobby1 6/16/2011 5:50:49 PM

  • @elainekirk I'm not sure it's a good idea to gag people, it will only drive them away. This subject is to important.
    by joniver 6/16/2011 5:51:33 PM

  • @Lilly True. I'll add that to my notes!

    by joniver 6/16/2011 5:53:07 PM

  • @LM Still not sure on the flashes. Someone suggested it was radiation on the CCD in the camera. This would go along with increased releases of radiation.

  • @Lilly The forecast is saying it's not raining, but there are water droplets on the Tepco cam. I'm really beginning to believe that the cam feed is not live. That might throw a monkey wrench in things. Last night I watched the huge crane get right up to #3 and there was no sign of it in the Tepco cam. Very curious!!! The weather doesn't seem to always correlate either.
    by LM 6/16/2011 5:57:16 PM

  • Of course...low lying fog can cause drizzle and not show up in weather forecasts!
    by LM 6/16/2011 5:58:49 PM

  • @LM Other people have mentioned this and I saw it the other day where the crane is visible on TBS and in a location the TEPCO camera should have picked up but didn't and the feed looked oddly familiar.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 6:00:13 PM

  • @LM being by the sea generates a certain amount of moisture at certain points of the day. We go camping right off Lake Michigan and cold mornings you get really wet air.

  • TO NRC: SUSPEND ALL REACTOR LICENSING UNTIL TASK FORCE RECOMMENDATIONS IMPLEMENTED
The following information was released by the office of Massachusetts Rep. Ed Markey:

Rep. Markey introduced H.R. 1242, the Nuclear Power Plant Safety Act of 2011 to impose a moratorium on nuclear power plant licenses and license extensions until an overhaul of nuclear safety to address the inadequacies exposed by the Fukushima meltdowns is completed.

Rep. Markeys office also recently released the report, Fukushima Fallout: Regulator Loopholes at U.S. Nuclear Plants, detailing several inadequacies of NRC safety regulations following the Fukushima crisis, including inadequacies related to the safety of spent fuel pools and the ability of nuclear power plants to mitigate the effects of and respond to a loss of electricity.

  • @lillymunster, the other week tepco assailed GE by claiming that the strength of the quake was within the design basis of unit 1. Obviously, tepco is trying to lay some blame on GE. I also remember that they had plans to retrofit reactors with some anti-quake braces, but we could not ascertain whether they ever implemented the upgrades.

  • I meant the strength of the quake at Fukushima.
by Peter Melzer 6/16/2011 6:09:52 PM

  • @Peter Melzer From what Elaine was able to dig up there was no major retrofits as needed. TEPCO did some lame minor changes like put a hand rail next to the control panels and braces on air conditioning ducts. They never install the hard core needed bracing and retrofits as far as we can tell.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 6:11:15 PM

  • @Peter Melzer Other power plants in Japan of the same design did retrofit work. Fukushima delayed and put it off.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 6:11:57 PM

  • @Lilly True...same here..I live 5 minutes from the Pacific in San Diego and we wake up to the marine layer pretty much every day from May through June!
