  • I would like to see the other board open again, and hope you come to that decision. I, too, am frustrated with the fighting, but am willing to look beyond it, so that the work can continue to shed light on this ongoing crisis in Japan. For some, that means the focus on earthquakes, haarp, contamination, ties to money/profit, current news, etc... Everyone knows there is a variety of interests. I would be at a loss without the board, it is comforting to know there are people giving their time to Japan and exploring their questions. I will take the bad with the good.

  • @lillymunster , I found the reference to the quake strength. This Mainichi Daily News post with the title "No. 1 reactor pressure vessel likely damaged immediately after quake" published online May 26, 2011, reports that “at the reactor, the magnitude 9.0 quake registered an intensity smaller than envisaged under its quake-resistance design.” TEPCO said they suspect, however, that the temblor directly damaged the RPV and/or accessory piping: mdn.mainichi.jp

  • The government has done next to nothing for areas destroyed by the Great East Japan Earthquake, says Tadashi Yanai, chairman and president of Fast Retailing Co., Operator of the Uniqlo fast fashion chain.
Question: How would you evaluate the Japanese government's handling of the rebuilding process in the aftermath of the March 11 quake?

Answer: I don't think the government has done a good job. Rubble has not been cleared in some of the affected areas, and relief money donated to support these areas has not even reached the evacuees, three months after the quake. www.asahi.com

  • @lillymunster , did not Tepco intend to shut unit 1 down for good this year? Did they retrofit the other units?
by Peter Melzer 6/16/2011 6:26:49 PM

  • @Peter Melzer there were also workers who said there was white smoke at #1 right after the quake.
    by lillymunster 6/16/2011 6:26:59 PM

  • @Peter Melzer #3 had the new shroud. #4 was being worked on. I think 1-2 were also done. I would have to go dig to find the actual schedule, not sure where I saved it. I remember reading something that they were considering running MOX in 1 at some point. That is disturbing.

    by fitter 6/16/2011 6:32:38 PM

  • @lillymunster , I recall unit 1 was slated for shutdown in April. It may have been for overhaul. Don't ask me where I read this. The issue to keep in mind is whether any upgrades were done to improve earthquake resistance.

  • @Peter Melzer TEPCO was pretty good about doing press releases about "good news". The major earthquake improvements if they were done were not publicized. We have all those TEPCO documents over on the Simply Info site. I can't find the link.
