  • @elainekirk they halted the process a mere 4-5 hours into it. More here: www.reuters.com

  • @bo worrying that they were going to run out of storage on the 15th and that day never arrives how are they keeping the water level down , quite a sily question but...
    by elainekirk 6/18/2011 8:31:15 AM

  • @elainekirk I'm sure they have found ways to keep it down that would shock even us.

  • Gotta love the Asahi. It's been my favorite national paper since I got here.
    by bo 6/18/2011 8:41:19 AM

  • asahi is great @northern there should be better monitoring there should be a way that there is an alert when radiation levels rise once the stuff is in the ocean we are stuck with it maybe a way of hitting a companies shareholders if they step out of line
    by elainekirk 6/18/2011 8:44:14 AM

  • Buoy monitors( powered by solar or tidal). :)

  • GE probably makes all three! The irony...facepalm.
    by NorthernCali 6/18/2011 8:47:08 AM

  • @NorthernCali Ha!
    by bo 6/18/2011 8:47:46 AM

  • @northern but without Japans agreement to them being in their waters we are stumped , the iaea or some global citizen funded outfit should demand them
    by elainekirk 6/18/2011 8:48:13 AM

  • then again the iaea has bought into the charity funded research that is trackingthe damned ocean pollution no doubt so they can get a say in how much info we get
    by elainekirk 6/18/2011 8:50:08 AM

  • Following the prevailing currents , private citizen monitoring could take place on boats placed downcurrent as close as legally possible in fishing waters maybe.
    by NorthernCali 6/18/2011 8:51:54 AM

  • @@northern :)
    by elainekirk 6/18/2011 8:52:23 AM

  • @bo would that be anything that would likely happen
    by elainekirk 6/18/2011 8:53:55 AM

  • en.vedur.is it is getting very shaky at the Icelandic edge of the North American Plate I wonder how this will affect the Japan edge

    by elainekirk 6/18/2011 9:06:39 AM

  • @elainekirk sorry was away for a few. It could happen. But as you know, unusual activities are not SOP for the Japanese. But clearly we are in (hehe) uncharted water here. If lots of radioactive fish turn up in the markets, and the GOJ takes no steps to protect people, it could happen.
    by bo 6/18/2011 9:14:33 AM

  • Concerned citizens and scientists, boaters, and fishermen could work together to get a general idea of fluctuations and extrapolate an ocean plume estimate like the atmospheric models and the radnet data mixed, but for the ocean! It could be researched wether buoys in international waters could be sponsored with monitors and relays to a database.
    by NorthernCali 6/18/2011 9:15:04 AM

  • so really it is a case of waiting until after the event
    by elainekirk 6/18/2011 9:18:06 AM

  • I could see this being driven by a respected NGO like the Peace Boat, which I believe is headquartered in Tohoku: www.peaceboat.org
    by bo 6/18/2011 9:20:01 AM

  • @bo well I wasnt aware of them is this a projct you are involved with bo? I wonder if they are on twitter going to find out would be good to follow them
    by elainekirk 6/18/2011 9:23:10 AM

  • @elainekirk I am not involved with them, but I know a number of people who have worked with them. They tend to focus on war & peace issues rather than environmental issues, but they are based in Japan and a lot of people in Japan know about them.
    by bo 6/18/2011 9:24:40 AM

Here's an interesting blog entry from The Atomic Power Review that addresses issues of information, opinion bias, forum&blog participation, and direction regarding sources of information on Fukushima on the internet:

  • @Reed I believe everyone of us who post in this scribble should take a look at that post. It would bring a lot of understanding amongst us and potentially avoid a lot of pointless arguments.

  • System to treat Japan nuke plant’s radioactive water halted hours after full operations begin
    www.washingtonpost.com
"The system was suspended in early Saturday when workers detected a sharp radiation increase in the system’s cesium-absorbing component, Matsumoto said. Radioactivity in one of 24 cartridges, which was expected to last for a few weeks, had already reached its limit within five hours."
    by Reed 6/18/2011 12:20:58 PM

  • @reed well they really did their sums didnt they!!
    by elainekirk 6/18/2011 12:25:38 PM

  • @all Morning
@Reed.. Amazing, that they could not messure this kind of obviously HIGH radiation prior to even starting this process ? This looks as though, TEPCO really has ZERO capability to detect correctly, nor Filter this.....How can they not have seen the amount of radiation prior ?......I guess, a faulty Cartridge is next in the news?
    by Veenie 6/18/2011 12:33:04 PM

  • @elainekirk This new, exploratory science work of trying to clean up such a disaster is proving to be a difficulty to say the least. No, the filters reaching such a high radiation level so fast doesn't bode well for any hopes of a speedy process, much less their hopes of being able to gain a net quantity of 'cleaned' water to overcome the volume of water that they're adding daily.
    @Veenie Good morning.
