  • TEPCO suspends water decontamination system
Tokyo Electric Power Company has halted operation of a system to decontaminate highly radioactive water at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant as one of the parts reached its radiation exposure limit in less than 5 hours.

The system went into service on Friday night.

One component of the system uses the mineral zeolite to absorb radioactive cesium. A replacement part of the US-made device had been expected to last one month, but radiation exceeding the maximum 4 millisieverts per hour led to the dramatically shortened lifespan.

TEPCO suspended operation of the device early on Saturday to determine the cause.

The utility says it has so far found no abnormalities with the system or water leakage in the system. It adds that the device's dosimeter may have detected radiation from nearby pipes containing contaminated water or other radioactive materials.

The treatment system holds the key to halting the accumulation of highly radioactive water and re-circulating contaminated water to cool the reactors.

  • @bo Yeah, it can be difficult to navigate. It's gloresis chat. Find the "Lobby" then click on glorisis chat. I think. :)

  • I produced this video in hopes that it would reach people and help them understand more about the reality of radiations effects on health resulting from Fukushima. Is that better?

    by carabnr 6/18/2011 4:55:51 AM

  • @carabnr well done! Thanks!

  • @carabnr Excellent video! As a nontechi, longtime lurker I would like to thank you for sharing your information.I am upset at the declining environment here. Hope 'they' can find an amicable solution so the progress and info sharing can and will continue. This whole situation seems to have escalated much like my daughter's middle school drama. I do not know(or care) who or what started this mess but my heartfelt hope is that adults will all act as adults and respect everyone else's opinions. @ ALL Can't we agree to disagree and intelligently discuss the differences? This site started with an awesome ideal and direction and I would like to see it get back to that. Bottom line (in my opion) Information SHOULD be free and so should the right torespectfully discuss all aspects of it. Hope to see you here with the whole gang soon carabnr. Good luck and thank you again for all your contributions.

  • Does anyone know what is presumed to be the cause of the death of all the cows in LeakSpinner's new video? Were they abandoned and died of hunger? There is absolutely no context, just the horrible footage.
    by bo 6/18/2011 5:59:43 AM

  • @Bo, it seems as time goes on we lose people. Fuku will be around for many years. Please watch and post!
    by Lurking 6/18/2011 5:59:50 AM

  • @Lurking in the Reuters days there were 1000 people on the chat at a time. People pay attention for different reasons. For some it's community, for some it is activism, for some self-preservation. I am used to situations like this, for example among the radiation affected in the Marshall Islands, or Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan where there are only a few outsiders paying attention anymore.
    by bo 6/18/2011 6:02:58 AM

  • I would add, it is stressful to deal with issues like this, in which one feels helpless, or scared. Often this is expressed in different ways. Frequently people who work on issues like this get depressed after a while, drop out, or, as can happen here, attack each other over petty matters. It's sad, but it is also natural/inevitable. My advice to all is to try to keep you eyes on the task at hand and not on all the relationship issues. People may have to step away, if only to manage their stress and feelings of helplessness. I don't want to criticize anyone for what they do to take care of themselves as long as it isn't cruel.

  • @bo Well said :)
    by deb 6/18/2011 6:16:10 AM

  • @deb ty. These are tough times, and they ain't gonna get easier.
    by bo 6/18/2011 6:17:25 AM

  • @bo I could not watch the video, from what has been posted about it, I wouldn't last 5 seconds. From what I have heard, it is starvation, probably radiation poisoning mixed in there too. It is horrible, for both humans and animals.
    by deb 6/18/2011 6:18:38 AM

  • @deb thanks. Yes, no reason to watch it, just to know about it is enough.
    by bo 6/18/2011 6:19:10 AM

  • Bo, how are you holding out through all this. It has to be especially difficult for you, living there, and watching this happening.
    by deb 6/18/2011 6:21:57 AM

  • @deb thanks for your concern. I'm doing ok. The first month was really hard for me, all of the uncertainty. I have been immersed in nuclear issues for all of my life, so I have developed good skills at keeping myself balanced and happy in the midst of trauma. Don't know if that is good or bad. The 500 miles between us and the plants helps to buffer my distress. One of the hardest things for me is having studied hibakusha communities, to watch this tragedy pile emotional trauma on top of physical trauma. Knowing what these people face for the rest of their lives, even without health problems.
    by bo 6/18/2011 6:24:47 AM

  • I'd add that knowing me as they do, none of my four kids can believe that I am still in Japan!
    by bo 6/18/2011 6:26:44 AM

  • @bo Balance in the midst of tragedy is a good thing, and necessary for the "mind" to move on to fix the bad things. The discrimination in our world is another matter, and one that is so unjust. It is something that I have never been able to grasp.
    by deb 6/18/2011 6:29:30 AM

  • @deb agreed. Having been involved in anti-nuke (mostly weapons) work and hibakusha advocacy for a long time I have been wanting to write a short piece for the list about managing stress. I have seen so many noble hearted activists fizzle and burn out after some number of years. There are really well established ways to maintain your abilities to not succumb to depression and to sustain your ability to continue working for a long period. I have noticed many people on the list begin to suffer from the sorrow of feeling helpless and loose steam. I should write that and post it.
    by bo 6/18/2011 6:32:37 AM

  • @bo Please do post. I think many people would benefit :)
    by ch 6/18/2011 6:35:21 AM

  • @bo Oh the things I could tell you about depression, strength, hope, and the will to survive, when your life is ripped out from under you. Something I have had to live through, deal with for the last 38 years. At 19, I had a massive stroke, leaving my left, dominant side paralyzed, loss of feelings, etc. It was a long journey for me, and one that seemed utterly hopeless.
    by deb 6/18/2011 6:37:30 AM

  • @ch thanks, I will. Maybe pin it so people can read it rather than having to search back. Much of what has been happening on the list is no surprise to me. I think many people are turning to these issues for the first time, and the immenseness of the darkness and the small light we try to fight it with can be overwhelming and defeating. But in the end this is always how change comes. And we do often pay with our happiness, or our sanity. But some of us just have no choice but to fight.
    by bo 6/18/2011 6:37:41 AM

  • @deb wow, I admire your strength. A very good friend of mine also suffered a stroke young, at 30, and has had to work on just such issues. Well I can say you are clearly having a big impact and getting a lot of good work done here. Thank you for your hard work amidst such personal challenges.
    by bo 6/18/2011 6:39:07 AM

  • @ bo True! Fight- as I often say "What is the alternative?"
    by ch 6/18/2011 6:43:50 AM

  • Thanks Bo, my heart goes out to all the people of the world that lose everything to some diseaster, ones that could or could not be prevented. We take so much for granted, and lose track of how fortunate we are to simply have internet and a computer to communicate through.
    by deb 6/18/2011 6:44:22 AM

  • @ch hallelujah! @deb ditto. Other people really help to sustain us. That is one reason why everyone here is so invested in what this list is.
    by bo 6/18/2011 6:45:21 AM

  • I agree that the challenges the board has faced recently have been an accumulation of stress, frustration, and the horror of the "worst nightmare" come true with Daiichi.
    by deb 6/18/2011 6:47:27 AM

  • @deb agreed. Often when we can't "fix things" in the big problem we focus on "fixing things" in the mundane.
    by bo 6/18/2011 6:50:16 AM

  • @bo Bo, you're a moderator, has there been any progress on opening the other page? I fear the overly tech talk on this one had made people more comfortable over there, and so I'm worried that a lot of people who relied on that page for important news are no longer 'connected'
