  • Nuclear Energy Institute Report : www.enewspf.com The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff said it now appears the agency was mistaken in its early conclusion that the used fuel pool at the Fukushima Daiichi reactor 4 may have lost all cooling water. “According to the latest information, it is unlikely it ever went completely dry,” said William Borchardt, NRC executive director for operations, in a progress briefing Wednesday for the NRC commissioners.

  • @elainekirk and @lilly: In the interview cited earlier with Iida (Googletrans gibberish) there are a couple of interesting points made. He is concern about whether the people in Japan will be able to determine the nuclear policy decisions of Kan. He states that there is a 180 degree difference in the information people get from TV as opposed to from the Internet. That Asahi has backed off by stating that 7 NPP are not enough to supply power needed this summer. Also at the end he states that Hitachi et al. are allied but that Toshiba has already invested 600 billion yen and is the bad guy who whats to continue to profit from this line of business.

    by dean 6/18/2011 1:20:17 AM

  • @dh That makes SOOOO much more sense! I read bits and pieces about the concerns of having enough capacity. Has anyone figured that out, if there will be enough power with some conservation measures in place?
    by lillymunster 6/18/2011 1:20:56 AM

  • @dean Saw a couple of articles this afternoon, mostly related to rumor control. One said they have not gotten any worse. Won't have another dam release report until 11am tomorrow. Fuku news has been eerilie quiet today.

  • all ok on the home fronts,,, I have been really tired today.. going to get some dinner and rest up a bit..
    by dean 6/18/2011 1:24:03 AM

  • Most of the news found was related to these house by house evacuations that are going on in the areas outside the exclusion zone. Those people evacuated will get help but it seems odd to be house by house.

  • @elainekirk at 6:20 PM: The video you posted is very interesting. "Japan after 10 years 2021." There are two parts to the video. Japanese doctors have gone to Belarus to followup on the effects of LOW doses of radiation. They found that the children were affected within 10 years and adult about 20 years after the event. They continued to live in the area and eat local milk and produce. One woman is shown finding out that she has thyroid cancer and a young man (36) gets a diagnosis of leukemia. Cancer incidents are up 10 to 20% over areas of Belarus that were not radiated. IAEA in report still refuses to acknowledge the effects of low doses of radiation....

  • From the reuters update: TOKYO Jun 18 (Reuters) - The operator of Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant, said on Saturday it had suspended an operation to clean up radioactive water only hours after it had begun as radiation levels rose faster than expected.

"The level of radiation at a machine to absorb caesium has risen faster than our initial projections," said a spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power Co .

    by smoss 6/18/2011 2:29:05 AM

  • @Panserbjorne9 They should have removed all those animals or at the very least gone in and "end' their suffering. They won't do the latter because that would be "accepting responsibility".
    by deb 6/18/2011 2:30:28 AM

  • @deb The govt eventually had a couple of groups with veterinarians go out and euthanize cattle in the worst areas. But that was after months of outcry as animals starved or roamed the area. I am sure they didn't move or euthanize all the cattle in the zone.
    by lillymunster 6/18/2011 2:32:12 AM

  • @lillymunster True, and by now those "less affected" areas are worse, and the cycle continues on.
    by deb 6/18/2011 2:36:27 AM

  • @deb i hope with the second wave of evacuations there is less of a problem with abandoned animals since the decision to leave will be slower. Saw a news story last night of a guy sleeping in his SUV with his dog at an evacuation center because they won't let him bring him in. Some of the evacuation centers were getting help to set up temporary kennels for pets but I don't think all have such things.
    by lillymunster 6/18/2011 2:39:29 AM

  • @smoss: TBS article mentions that 4 Fuku Daiichi first responsers of SDF were exposed to over the limit 50mlSev when reexamined after over 2 months. The Ministry of Defense had told the Diet that no one received more than 22.7 mlSev. The discrepency in claims and why the SDF did not examine its members for over 2 months is being investigated.
