  • @ Lilly Ridiculous isn't it?! I can't get over the headlines...and I've noticed that the bad news is always preceeded by an outrageously optimistic release. They are PR pros...

  • @LM Headlines run through Google translate are the best though. I was scanning for news articles and run into a few that make me LOL. TEPCO has PR down to an art form.

  • Japan Strains to Fix a Reactor Damaged Before Quake

    By HIROKO TABUCHI

TSURUGA, Japan — Three hundred miles southwest of Fukushima, at a nuclear reactor perched on the slopes of this rustic peninsula, engineers are engaged in another precarious struggle.

Local men fished near the Monju reactor in Tsuruga, a long-troubled project that has been shut down since August.

Kosuke Okahara for The New York Times

Miwako Ogiso, part of a Fukui Prefecture group against nuclear power, calls the Monju project “Japan's most dangerous reactor.” It has a history of safety problems and lies on an active fault.

The Monju prototype fast-breeder reactor — a long-troubled national project — has been in a precarious state of shutdown since a 3.3-ton device crashed into the reactor’s inner vessel, cutting off access to the plutonium and uranium fuel rods at its core.

  • @lillymunster , the idea of molten metallic sodium and water in the same heat exchanger reminds me of high school chemistry. Remember how a little piece of sodium flitzes across the water with lots of flame and smoke? A highly exothermic reaction already at room temperature. The heat exchanger in the breeder develops a pinhole, we are looking at an explosion. On top we have plenty plutonium. This French wiki touches very lightly on these issues.
by Peter Melzer 6/18/2011 3:22:16 AM

  • @Peter Melzer They had a sodium leak at Monju at one point. There was a big cover up and the actual video footage is on wikileaks website. The damage doesn't look horrible until you realize what is actually leaking out of the pipes. Then just for more scary instability they run MOX in it.

  • @bo , do referenda exist in the Japanese political system?
by Peter Melzer 6/18/2011 3:41:37 AM

  • @Peter Melzer I have no idea. I don't vote here. Also, Sat and at home, so no Japanese friend nearby to ask. I'll find out and report back later. But my sense is that there isn't. I have never heard of an "issue" that was being talked about in that way.
    by bo 6/18/2011 3:43:19 AM

  • @M.I.A.: MIT Nuclear School of Engineering paper - p. 17 Amazing how they explain away the 20mSv per year exposure as minimal compared to background radiation. Contrast this with the two Japanese doctors that have traveled to Belarus over the years to study low dosage exposure. Also, MIT does not refer to the effects on children. Weighing a .2% increased chance of cancer in 20 years versus loss of home, livelihood and community is definitely a hard one.

by Peter Melzer 6/18/2011 3:51:36 AM

  • @dh Well, they HAVE to minimize, or they won't have jobs if nuke plants go away, eh? I posted it to show an 'industry/academia' white-wash. The "plants performed well, all things considered" outlook is a farce.

    POLITICS JUN. 18, 2011 - 07:15AM JST ( 5 ) HIROSHIMA —
Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui has drawn criticism over his remarks in a meeting with an A-bomb survivor that some survivors demand assistance as if it is their right and have forgotten the feeling of appreciation.

On Friday evening, Matsui told a group of A-bomb survivors, “I’m not convinced that my comments were wrong. It is important to understand that we can support the survivors only if many Japanese citizens share (a sense of) their sufferings and pains.”. www.japantoday.com
