  • @bo Very well done and well documented post. I am finding patterns in the regulatory bodies and the companies that implemented the early commercial reactor projects in the US. They were largely ignoring or lacked data related to earthquake risk. Same with flood risks back then. The small experimental reactor they ran in SD for a few years was staffed with people who had no extensive nuclear training. Many of the comments in federal reports glossed over the severity of outside factors on reactor projects. Very much a "can't happen here" mentality in the 60's and 70's.

  • FUKUSHIMA, Japan, June 21 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Kinki University gave portable dosimeters on Tuesday to around 1,500 children and teachers in the town of Kawamata, Fukushima Prefecture, part of which has been designated as evacuation radius in the wake of the nuclear emergency at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.
Separately, the town government said it has decided to distribute the dosimeters to parents with children aged 4 or younger who do not attend kindergarten as well as pregnant women from July 1.

Kinki University has been cooperating with the local government in measuring radiation dosages and compiling countermeasures.

  • A nuclear plant was inches away from being engulfed by the bloated Missouri River after several levees in the area failed to hold back its surging waters, raising fears it could become America's Fukushima.
Nuclear accidents - like oil spills and financial meltdowns - happen because big companies push to make more money by cutting every safety measure in the books.
The accident at Fukushima was predictable.
Likewise, the potential problem at the Fort Calhoun reactor in Nebraska was predictable. www.washingtonsblog.com

  • Radioactive dust from Fukushima plant hit N. America soon after meltdown: researchers . Radioactive materials spewed out from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant reached North America soon after the meltdown and were carried all the way to Europe, according to a simulation by university researchers.
The computer simulation by researchers at Kyushu University and the University of Tokyo, among other institutions, calculated dispersal of radioactive dust from the Fukushima plant beginning at 9 p.m. on March 14, when radiation levels around the plant spiked. mdn.mainichi.jp

  • After a long phone call with tech support I have the web site issue fixed. It may take 12-24 hours for things to update everywhere and start working right. Had to update the domain record. This also completely removed "houseoffoust" from the group web site so we will not longer have things referring to my personal domain at all on the group site. Please let me know when you have success going to the www.simplyinfo.org domain. If you need to reach the site before that updates use www.houseoffoust.com/group. This will work in a pinch.

  • Morning,
The Calhoun plant is three feet away from flooding, another plant in cold shutdown since april is already under water

  • by Veenie 6/23/2011 1:37:16 PM

  • @Veenie Cooper is 2.5 ft. from their flood trigger level to shut down. Where did you find that Calhoun is 3 feet from flooding? The other plant would be Calhoun. The outside areas are under water - so all their out buildings and equipment sheds are under water. The main plant building was still holding back water as of pictures from the other day. I keep seeing that big black water dam and wonder if debris floating past could puncture it.

    Tepco restarts water clean-up operation

    By Jonathan Soble in Tokyo

Nuclear technicians in Japan have restarted a problem-plagued water purification system at Fukushima Daiichi atomic power station, as they race to prevent radiation-contaminated water from overflowing into the sea.

About 110,000 tonnes of highly contaminated water have accumulated in basements and service tunnels under the plant’s four crippled reactors, a result of three months’ worth of emergency cooling efforts since the March 11 tsunami. The onset of Japan’s early-summer rainy season has made the situation more critical by adding to the build-up.

  • @lillymunster I feel so sad for these people, seems like there is nowhere truly safe for them to go?!
    by NervousinNJ 6/23/2011 3:03:22 PM

  • @Veenie They've been moving that contaminated water around to prevent the levels to go too high and start leaking (if it's not leaking already). Also the decontaminated water is then stored in those tanks that they had installed a couple of weeks ago. Since the decontamination system, even if not at 100%, still decontaminates more water than that that is being pumped [into the reactors] it is natural that the volume of contaminated water will start decreasing instead of increasing. No mystery there.
by Pedro Jesus 6/23/2011 3:06:14 PM

  • @NervousinNJ It may also be key in forcing the govt. to admit to contamination outside the exclusion zone and nearby cities. The illusion that radiation stays put is quickly falling apart

  • @lillymunster Thank you. I was a bit worried. It's incredible how these strong aftershocks haven't taken there toll on the crippled [almost destroyed] reactor buildings. Original design was supposed to withstand only up to M5.7 EQs. I wonder what sort of wizardry TEPCO has in place there. Anyway, whatever it is I hope those units hang on until they stabilize them.

  • @Pedro Jesus Did you see Edano's post yesterday? He found a strong quake in April that happened and after that was when the readings for #1 drywell when crazy? It looks like something from that EQ may have done something and not just an instrument failure.
